Brits can't find Chicago, Dallas in geography test

By Jennifer Harper
THE WASHINGTON TIMES

Oh, those "stupid Yanks," those "stupid Americans."
We've taken a drubbing for a while now in press reports that paint Americans as dim bulbs with big mouths, big cars and lousy foreign policy.
The threads of this ongoing America-bashing include differences over the war on terrorism and resentment of American culture in general and President Bush in particular.
Anti-American sentiment grew so piquant in Britain that Lord Carey of Clifton the former Archbishop of Canterbury called for an end to it while praising the "wonderful innocence and independence" of Americans, the London Times reported Nov. 24.
But a new survey reveals that the duh factor is not confined to these shores, Jessica Simpson notwithstanding. The British are not exactly the sharpest tools in the drawer themselves.
Sixty-five percent of Brits could not figure out which U.S. city served as the setting for the hit musical "Chicago," according to a survey of 1,000 British adults released yesterday by the London-based broadcast network Channel 4.
Such geographical shortcomings are not limited to musicals.
Another 57 percent could not quite figure out which city was the setting for the famous American TV series "Dallas," while 66 percent could not identify the setting for "Streets of London," a tune by balladeer Roger Whittaker.
Things also were a little hazy for the British on the European continent. The survey found that 70 percent could not identify the host city for the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.
More than two-thirds 67 percent did not know the year World War II ended. Another 64 percent did not know which country the French Alps were located in.
The complete survey will be featured in tomorrow's broadcast of "Beat the Nation," a daily British quiz show that claims to be Britain's "fairest" by pretesting all questions on 1,000 persons, then ranking them for difficulty. The survey was conducted by YouGov, a London-based market research group.
To be fair, the British are not the only folks who are geographically challenged.
In its own survey of 300 persons between ages 18 and 24 released in November 2002, America's own National Geographic Society found that 87 percent could not point out Iraq on a world map. Three out of 10 could not find the Pacific Ocean.
The young Americans ranked second to last in the poll, able to identify only seven of 16 countries in a map quiz. Swedes ranked first, identifying 13 of 16, with Germans and Italians next, at a dozen each.
"Someone once said that war is God's way of teaching geography. Apparently, war or even the threat of war cannot adequately teach it," National Geographic President John Fahey said at the time.
"More American young people can tell you where an island on the 'Survivor' television series is than can identify Afghanistan or Iraq," he added.
That poll has been quoted repeatedly by a gleeful global press since its release.
At least one British official agrees that his countrymen, well, can use some smarts.
Former Chief Inspector of Schools Chris Woodhead told the BBC on Friday that "most Brits are not bright enough for university."
The British government would like at least half of those between 18 and 30 to get a degree up from the 2 percent who went to college in the years following World War II.
"I don't think that 50 percent of people are actually able to study an academically demanding degree," Mr. Woodhead said.

Guess what. 80% of Americans couldn't point out where the capital of Canada is. Nor do they know what our capital is called.

92% don't know who our prime minister is

30% of Americans think Canada is just another state of America.

Americans know dick all about our country! Yet we know so much about theres.

I sure hope most americans know what " The District of Columbia" is.

The questions asked about canada need to be followed by "Do you care about Canada?"

100% of American's say "No".

How many Americans know what year WW2 ended, how many know what year Columbus landed, or how many know the date the bill of rights was signed. (I bet 50% say July4th!) I would venture to say that history and political geography are, on average, everyone's worst subjects. Unless you teach it, or have one of a very few jobs that use that information you have no need to keep it fresh; just because you forget when the bill of rights was signed doesn't mean it is going to go away. (baring the DMCA ;) )

Here's my 2 cents -

All of those questions for those polls are usually asked in front of a camera or under circumstances not conducive to testtaking which leads to those outrageous answers. That is not really indicative of a person's (or nation's) intelligence.

I consider myself a very intelligent person and I knew most of those questions, however, I didn't know all of them. I have also been asked very simple questions in the past but have had a brain lock. I'm not sure what Canada's capital is (I think its Ottawa, but not sure) and don't have a clue as to who the prime minister is.

That being said - you could know all those questions but that only means you have memorized the answers in the past. Those are tests of memorization. I probably wouldn't be able to pick out Iraq or Afghanistan on a map, but I can argue both sides of the War issue and can also speak for hours about the politics of WW II.

What about your deductive and cognitive skills? To be honest, I don't have that great of a short term memory but I guarantee I am smarter than half of the people who have a great memory.

I can't speak french worth a damn, I mean I'm really really bad (I studied for 8 years, H.S. and College) but does that mean I'm stupid? I went to an ivy league college and then law school - does than mean I'm smart?

All these tests and questions are bullshit.

Oh wow! Like did I expect anything different? Suddenly im the bad guy.

This thread is stupid. Its called being a "FLAME BAITER". Whether you don't want to be flamed or not is not up to you. Your on an edgy topic here. Do you expect people from the UK to take this thread light heartedly or something?

The author of that post is American. Shes saying how dull the British are. This is a BIAS post. The author is pretty much making Americans sound smarter than Britians. I don't see how this talks about everyone being dumb motherfuckers. The author seems pretty narrow to Britains. So I simply rebutt her facts with the fact that most Americans probably don't know very much about any other country except there own.

Not to mention who needs to write an article about dumb motherfuckers everywhere when its common sense???? I hope Jennifer didn't waste too much time writing this.

Well asking someone a question like "identify the setting for the song Streets of London" and tell me how that would be less obvious. It's not like there were questions based on the U.S history, if there were I would understand. I hate pants, the point you make I find pretty dumb, of course americans dont know your prime minister because it doesn't matter to alot of people.

Understandable. I couldn't care less whether you guys cared who my Prime Minister is. Just like I couldn't care too who ever the hell your vice president is.

Ofcourse it doesn't hurt anyone (including myself) to expand their minds and learn a little bit about another country and its history.

Wow aren't you the ignorant bastard.

If it wasnt for Canada some of the northern states wouldnt have electricity (Quebec imports some to you guys!)

80% of the things we do are sold to you assholes(people like you) including crops, meat and CANADIAN WOOD! You know the thing that comes from tree's! Yeah well we sell it to you guys so you can build more shacks for your fucking crack addicts. If it werent for us to save your ass with some things you'd be in deep shit.

How about you make a research about Canadian products and Canadian workforce that goes to the U.S you'll be amazed how much your wrong.

I mean heck... 70% of our doctors leave for the U.S and alot of medics and doctors over in Iraq etc. are canadians healing your boys!

Lol, to lighten the mood(or fire french ppl up...)...I just found this on a website about WWII:

On the day the Second World War officially ended (8 May 1945), French troops stationed in Stif, in North-Eastern Algeria, fired on demonstrators killing somewhere between fifteen and fifty thousand unarmed protestors. A similar repression took place in Madagascar two years later. Indeed, there were more Algerians killed by French colonial control between 1945 and 1955, than French people killed by the Nazi Occupation. Many of those involved in gallantly fighting Fascism and for France's Liberation
