So do you want to die as one of the only people who hasn't read LOTR? It'll only take a year or two for you. Less time it took for all the movies to come out.

One reason why I stopped reading the Wheel of Time series back around book 5. I'd poke fun of people continuing to read his work, but they would turn around and point out that I'm waiting for the next Sword of Truth book to come out.

I absolutally intend to be one of these people. LOTR 1 SUCKED! The hobbit was great, but rest of the series blows!

Don't limit yourself to one genre like Sci-Fi. A great book depends on the writer, not the subject matter.

I personally would recommend The Dark Elf Trilogy (Homeland, Exile, and Sojourn) by R.A. Salvatore.

Tom Clancy is a great author. I've read Patriot Games and now I'm reading Rainbow Six, great books. The Dirk Pitt novels by Clive Cussler are also really good. Pretty much anything by Tolkein, and a lot the Star Wars books are pretty good if you're into that.

I read like two books in the Sword of Truth. Redwall is always good.

Dragonlance books, read those, NOW!

Stephen King has some books, the Dark Tower series for instance.

I don't read a lot of novels. But these are the ones I would recommend.

The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells

The Hobbit - J.R.R Tolkien (This is Bilbo's side of the story. The part that happened before the LOTR. Definately worth a read.)

The Giver - Louis Lowery (It's not a big novel, but it's my favorite book of all time. Probably the only one I ever read more than once because I actually wanted to. It's deep stuff.)

Did he run away from the racist and war free world where your job is picked for you when your 12, where you can't ride a bike until your 8, where men and women can't participate in sex freely, where they aren't allowed to pick their spouse, where hills are called "mounds" and only one person, in the entire community, has memories of what the past used to be like just so balance could be saved, and die? Or did he actually find a world like ours. I hate that book.

Aurture C clarks 2001, 2010, 2061(51?), and 3001 are good, so are the Rama series

You HAVE to read LOTR becasue even though the movies did a decent job they are awsome. 1984, Animalfarm are good. Tom Clancy stuff. Hich Hikers guide to the galaxy

EDIT: Forgot Enders Game, Speaker of the Dead, Xenocide, Childeren of the Mind(the orson scott card Ender series), Ender's Shadow, Shadow of the Hegemon, Shadow Puppets (paralles to the previous)

If you like war novels, check out "The Iron Lance" and "The Things They Carried."

Everay
2004-01-19, 07:17 PM
you know, i looked into both those books, and i dont really want to read a war novel, wether it is the crusades or veitnam, because, both events happened, and both are apart of history, and i dont really like false stories, that didnt happen, and are based off of history. however, if the author that wrote "The Things They Carried" was a actual veteran from Veitnam, that would change my oppinion....which after reading about him, i found out he was, so mabey ill pick that one up.

I also recommend the following detective novels. Unlike the movies, these have violence and sex. Yes, sex. The movies were made early on when showing someone in a skintight bathing suit was offensive.

Starfist might be a good series for you as well.

Edit: And a warning, Dune owns, but the prequels suck

David Eddings (Belgariad, Mallorean, Elenium and Tamuli, Blegarath the Sorcerer and Polgara the Sorceress)
R.A. Salvatore (Dark Elf Trilogy, Icewind Dale Trilogy, Legacy, Starless Night....there are a lot, just pick some up ;) )

Some of the Star Wars novels aren't too bad. They fugde the Star Wars universe pretty bad but overall are decent.

Robert Jordan's Wheel of time is good but has been getting kinda bad with the latest books since it's generally believed he either never knew how to end the series or if he did he forgot around book five (it's on 10 or 11 at this point, I forget).

Dune series aren't too bad. They can be a little dry but overall they're pretty good.....no pun intended >_<

Basically there is a shtload of books out there. Try going to Barnes and Noble or something like it and just reading the back of some novels. It doesn't tell you a whole lot but sometimes you'll find something that catches you're eye and interests you. Form there just buy it and find out if it was worth it ;)

The 1th book for "The Wheel of Time" series, "Crossroads of Twilight," is the last one he did. However, his newest one in the series "New Spring: The Novel" is the completed version of "New Spring" which can be found in bits and pieces in "Legends." It basically takes place before the first book, setting up the characters Moiraine and Lan, and how they got about to being in the Two Rivers and meeting Rand. I havn't finished, a little more than halfway through.
I just wish he would finish the thing, I personally see "New Spring: The Novel" as a scapegoat, it lets him please his readers for a bit while he thinks up how to end it. I mean, "Crossroads of Twilight" deals with how Egwen? Edgwen? I forget her name, but it deals with her and the new White Tower and stuff. Not even *close* to the end.

I have lost faith in Barnes and Noble.

I went about an hour ago. I can understand the coffee/snacks area, but they had fucking old computer games like Myst, Legends of Might and Magic, Tomb Raider, and Unreal Tournament for sale. If I wanted to go to the Electronics Boutique of 1999, I would do it elsewhere.

I also saw a book on Star Wars Galaxies. Not a strategy guide, a fucking NOVEL based on SWG.

This didn't tick me off, but they also have wiccan books for sale. I saw one in Spanish with a pentagram on the cover, telling you about "brujeria" (translates to witchcraft). And people say that wiccans aren't witches.

I'm ordering all my books via internet. OMG BETTER IDEA- IM FUCKING DOWNLOADING THEM OFF OF KAZAA!

1. UT is fun no matter what, I'd buy Doom if they had it too.
2. There is a Halo novel, good but really, a novel also based on a video game
3. ....what?
4. No, amazon+psu=better idea.

O i didn't read the first page. Best book of all freakin time=Ender's Game. And after that, read Ender's Shadow. Its basicly hte same story exept from a differnt person. And it unleashes some of the things you didn't know about what happened behind Ender's back.

Yeah, this is pretty true. Dune's excellent, though.

I'll ditto All Quiet on the Western Front.

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but The Foundation Trilogy is a fantastic work by Issac Asimov. Probably his best. It's pretty long, but once you get into it, it's fast and fun read.
