It's pretty cool when a commander chooses a base that's experiencing bad weather for his target, right? He can be relatively sure that snipers and aircraft will have reduced visibility because of the weather. Right?
Nope. Retardedly enough, you can switch 'Skydome' off in your video settings, and view the world as though there were no ill weather.
It's laughable. I feel like I'm revealing an exploit even as I type this, but the devs for some truly retarded reason felt it was preferable to offer a slight FPS advantage to those with inadequate computers at the expense of strategical consideration.
Retarded, I says.

Indeed, they should force weather and up its frequency to at least twice as high as it is now, and make it far more severe. Maybe even go so far as to affect flyers movement.

Even more retarted is the Flora setting. I can't tell you how many times I thought I was "hiding" in the flora, until I found out that you could turn it off completely. It really sucks too, because I love the way flora and weather looks. But it's not worth the disadvantage to have them on :(

/agree the weather and Flora should be part of the game. As it is now I have both off.

Perhaps it's a mental condition, but I almost never jump in combat, knowing that it will produce warping effects for my opponents.
Is it wrong to think about fair play while you play? HELL NO.
I used to use jump and crouch like a bastard when I played an alien in Aliens vs. Predator 2, because your enemies wouldn't see any warping in that game.
If you ever had nightmares about a predalien, you may well have faced me in a game or two of Aliens vs. Predator 2.
As for PlanetSide, each and every jump is a laughable voyage into the land of cheese and gravy.

I hate how a 1.8 Ghrz, 640 RAM, and a 9600 is still way too slow for this game...it irks me so much. The min req. should be like 1 gig of ram, 2.8 ghrz, and 256 9800 Pro.

I have 2.4ghz processor, 1.5gb pc2700 memory and 128mb Radeon 9700 graphics and it's flawless.
What we're seeing is the grim result of disparity between our PC platforms.
Bill Gates wants to slay the PC and replace it with the console. He wants every gamer to use a console. He thinks that a PC is too much power for a gamer (i.e. the power to write aimbots, etc., which many scumsuckers have gleefully done, regardless of their effects on fair play).
Woah, sorry about the rant. It's just that I grew up with PCs, and now there are people who would put an end to them forever.

PC Gaming isn't going anywhere Vet. There are far too many hardcore PC Gamers that will never convert to console. I hate console.
Anyway, when you say flawlessly, how does your machine perform in big zerg battles? I have a similar system, but only a gig of RAM. My fps drops to <10 in the zerg. Does yours?

I have a P4 1.6, 1 gig of ram, and a 9600xt. It runs really smooth. I would bet if you jump up to 1 gig of ram you would see a huge difference.

Flora is a major killer for my FPS on my comp for some reason with it on high i get around 20 fps-25 fps with it off i get around 60-70 so i rather that u leave flora off and keep weather on

I use to be a avid Console gamer but not nearly as much anymore I mainly spend my time on the PC. only time I use the console anymore (mainly older games metroid, Secert of mana and chrono trigger) for some good RPG games btw final fantasy sucks. gotta love them....oh and btw no way Consoles will ever replace PCs.

the reason PC gaming is so big is because everybody has one. can't say that about consoles. and bill gates isn't worried about cheaters, he's worried about warez, he uses cheats as an excuse.
do you have any idea how much lag flora and weather produce on machines with less ram? I have 512 RAM and a 2.4B and even before I started using an MX440, back when my ti 4200 wasn't burnt and I wasn't waiting for the new card, it was really hard to play with flora and weather in big battles.
here's a little idea, make it so if you disable weather particles the game just limits your view distance instead. flora is harder but it gives less of an advantage anyway.

i have 512 DDR, P4 thats like 2.53 gig, and a 64 mg graphic card and i get ugly lag during zergs. i connect at 128k. makes me want to quit PS. i would love PS sooo much more if it had 1/2 or even 1/4 less lag.

Gunslanger, I first played PS with 512MB RAM. After a month, I upgraded to 1 gig. IMHO, it is a night and day difference. PS is more or less unplayable with anything less than 768MB of RAM. Put in another 512MB stick before you give up.

really? thanks for the advice! i will try it. as you can see from my sig, i had quit for awhile. got tired of sony telling me my lag was becuase of they don't support my soundcard(which was total BS). i took a few months off, tried SWG, left, went back to EQ. now i'm back as a part time PS player-missed it. if i can fix this lag problem, i'll be full time PS and probably quit EQ(after playing that for over 2 years).

it's not the system RAM, it's the graphics memory, 64M doesn't cut it.
I have 512, works pretty well on low detail. just configure the initial virtual memory size to be 1024 and you're set.

1.4ghz Athlon, 512 DDR266, 128 9600xt
Well above the minimum reqs listed on the box.
Even with all graphics settings turned off/minimized I get way too much FPS lag.
I know that an extra 512 ram would do wonders, but that would mean also buying a new motherboard and I just can't afford to do it right now.
I wish they would let me turn down/off even MORE settings. I could not care less how pretty the game looks.

Funny thing is, I used to run PS at HIGH graphics options on my computer without lag when I first started playing. Then they released CC, and I had to drop to MEDIUM. Then they did the server merge and now I'm a frickin LOW in massive battles if I want to kill the lag. Everytime they make the game "Better for everyone" they make it look worse for me.

Good point. It's actually going to be a combination of both. A 128MB graphics card (or 256) definitely makes a difference. But for performance vs price, you'll get much more out of more system RAM than buying a new vid card. That said, I would upgrade both if possible, but the RAM first if you can't do both.

Hmm...i have my graphics all set as low as possible and i have my virtual memory set high. funny thing is that some people have worse systems than me and get less lag than me...i'm not going to buy another graphics card anytime soon.

set your virtual memory to custom. one of the things that cause the most lag is when there isn't enough and the OS starts increasing it ingame. high is arounf 700 megs I think.

The point is, using much virtual memory in a game causes a performance bottleneck now matter how you look at it. More RAM = less virtual mem used in game, thus better performance :)

heh, i took someone's adive here awhile ago and set it waaay higher than that. the minimum is like 1024 and max is....well i forget the number...it seemed to help.

2004-01-20, 03:41 PM
Min and Max need to be the same number if you dont want to take a performance hit, but as already stated, if you are depending on the pagefile, you are screwed anyways. If you alt tab out of PS and look at the task manager it is running at like 730MB so you need to have more ram than that if you dont want to have pagefile lag

I havent read this all yet, but, i think they should add a permanent limited flora and have a full flora setting for the same reason as the weather thing. Or add a thing that limits your vision any way in a simpler way when the weather thing is off and a thing that still covers up things under the grass when floras off that is like an ultra Infiltrators suit affect. So it really hard to see but if you look close you can see it somewhat. Not that youd necesarily know what it is. that way you cant be seen that well when you hiding and they cant destinquish between you or a mine or whatever.
And i dont personaly see the problem with bots. ITs the same as a computer Player. You can always kick there ass and ther not hard to spot. Ive always thought they are good things for a game. They cant change the rate of fire or anything to give htem an advantage any one cant have throught there own play and they can change from what theyve been programmed to do. Unless theyve taken it into hacking parts of the game to make things work instantly in a way they cant.
How about you stop suggesting things they should change until you know how the game actually plays as it is right now?
Ok, thanks.

Jaged you should try reading the fucking thread.
I was saying with the infiltrator suit affect that they would then have the same or less chance for seeing stuff as people with flora on.

what is the absolute best video card you can get for Planetside? my dad said he might buy me one :D
With flora always enabled, minefields would be possible, as you wouldn't be able to see every mine laid on the ground. THAT would add quite a twist to the game!

Even now with Max Flora turned on, it all will dissapear when you flip on Darklight. That is how I keep flora on and still scan for mines

making flora and/or weather required to be on would totally ruin the game for me.
my fps goes down about 2-3x with flora on, and goes down at least 2x in a heavy rain/dust storm.
I'd quit if those setting werre required to be on...
and btw, my specs:
amd athlon 2500+ (running at 1700, have to upgrade mobo..)
ECS k7s5a Mainboard, 266 fsb,2700 ddr,4x agp
1 gig DDR, pc2100
geforce fx 5200 (128mb ddr, 8x agp, not oc'd)

IMO, if money is of no concern, then you want the ATI Radeon 9800 XT. If you want the best bang for your buck, but still top of the line, get the ATI RAdeon 9800 Pro.
