I recently bought planetside and i was wondering if gettin a headset actually improves the game or makes it better in any way

Not really
Mostly useful incase you don't live alone, or your roommates are annoyed by the explosions.
Counter Strike... well yeh, they are almost neccisary. But not Planetside.

Headsets are the only way to go if you play with an Outfit that uses a voice comms program. Nobody likes hearing background audio when you say something.

Yes, if you use voice comm (which since you're asking about a headset and not headphones I assume you do).

I use a labtec usb headset. Thing about USB headsets, they count as a seperate sound input/output device. All of my teamspeak sounds (people's voices) go straight to my ear, while the game sounds are piped through my 5.1 digital surround.
I'd reccomend it.

Those plantronics are what we use at teh gaming center, so i bought them for home and they rock. A Mic and an outfit that uses it is so important to the game, i would not have played this long without it.

evil, evil authenticity...
anyway - the USB headsets cut out about 80% of the static, so your voice is nice and clear.

Most definately, if you are in an outfit where Teamspeak or another voice comm software is used. With a headset there is much less feedback and background noises.

The only problem with headsets is if you have surround-sound speakers. You'll have to unplug them to plug the headset in (unless you have some uber sound-card with more inputs).
The ugly alternative is to use another network computer to communicate with the chat server. In this case, you may wish to actually run the chat server, if you have the bandwidth to support it.
So yes and no. Easy answer.
