My mother just got it a few days ago from her father. The dictionary began in the 1880's and didn't end until 1928. Only one person who worked on it lived to see it published. These days, very private houses own it, considering the cost is between 2k-3k. There's around 20 books in total. Each of the boxes we received it in weigh 13kg. Pretty impressive isn't it?

Woh, is that the orignal copy that all of the other dictionarys by that name are based on?

Octavian

Not THE original, but it's the Second Edition. The ORIGINAL would cost heaps.

EDIT - But I wish :(

I doubt the original will ever leave the Library of Congress and/or the museum (sp?) it's in.

Just get yourself a collegiate dictionary for like $40 or less and you're set for life.

My brother read a book about the history of the Oxford Dictionary. He was telling me about it. I think he said it was call the Gentleman and the Madman. I guess one of the main contributors of the Dictionary was a man in an insane asylum. He said its a pretty good read. I wanted to read it but the bastard gave it to an other friend to read. So I ass punched him as hard as I could.

Actually they're making a third edition which won't be done until around the year 2040. So I'm going to submit that word to the them.

We all know that's a scat porn dungeon.

Oh um of course it's not. I got "rid" of that ages ago.

Apparently with the first edition, they thought it was only take them 4 or 5 years. Oh they were terribly wrong. But you know it took Tolkien something like 12 years to write LOTR. That's one book, with only a bit over 1000 pages. He wrote it by himself.

EDIT - Wooo! I knew I could make First Lieutenant today.

His set gives more details about words. Like when it was first used, what it ment then and what it means now, like how the word gay has changed over the years. :) And other things I think.
