View Full Version : Call of Duty Expansion, and other games that could change the WW2 game genre

A few weeks ago Actiontrip.com said EB Games had a listing for a Call of Duty Expansion and had a link to EB's online store. Most of the time retailers find out about games before press releases. But to my ideas for expansion pack,

People are tired of fightning through war-torn western europe (MOH:AA, CoD). Vietnam seems to be the new war cliche, but there are 3 theaters that havent been turned into "award-winning" calibur. That would be great using the modified RcTw engine that is the Call of Duty engine, some of these have been made into expansions like the ones for MoH:AA but those suck in single player.

-Itallian Campaigns (Monte Cassino, etc.)
-North African Theatre (Kasserine Pass)
These two have both been done in MoH:AA expansions, but with call of duty's atmosphere and superior gameplay these theaters could be great. MoH:AA is brain dead run and gun action in comparison to Call of Duty. (MoH:AA=Rambo style WW2)
-Pacific Theatre (Pacific Islands, Midway, Coral Sea, Iwo Jima, etc.)
MoH:PA is supposed to do this but it seems to be more of the same rambo one man army ordeal. If done right (a pearl harbor scenario is to difficult to depict in a FPS game).

For those who have played CoD think of the possibilities for these scenarios. Moving onto these scenarios could bring new gameplay into the tired WW2 genre, please no more Normandy to Germany games.

Any opinions or other ideas for expansions or how to help the tired WW2 genre?

well, you're right..but the Pacific Theater would be hard to pull off correctly it seems..North Africa wouldn't be much unless it was a tank game...Italian would be pretty fun...tho i can see the same D-Day feel if they included the landing at Sicily. I think Vietnam would really be one of the hardest wars to depict because to give it a more realistic feel you'd have to have all the traps the VC used punji sticks etc.

but yea i can see what you mean

Im not tired of the European WW2 genre yet. People are always gonna look at how they can make it better than any other game has done it. I love playing the Russian campaign in CoD. Berlin is the best. When I saw the riechstag for the first time in the game, I was like "Holy shit! This is fucking A!" and than I was caught off guard when suddenly the mg's started to fire at us from out the windows. That was sooooo fucking cool.

They need to make a WW2 game using one of the newer engines. Like Crytek of the Half life 2 engine. That would be an amazing WW2 game.

The WW2 genre is getting stagnant. I understand that each subsequent game does it better, but how about historical fiction? I would enjoy a "What if..." Cold War game set in the 50's where the USSR invades the USA or something. It would also provide an extra punch in that you're not liberating some microscopic Ukranian town, or storming Normandy...again...you're liberating the towns you know. It would be eerie.

You know what guys forget all my ideas i want a expansion pack where you are the French trying to hold France and fend off the Germans for more than 30 seconds

Seriously, Im a History buff and i loved CoD for that reason even though it wasnt "historically accurate" at times, it captured the atmosphere of World War II. What i want to see is more developed tactics among the AI, the audio code for CoD is just random flank left flank right, set up a base of fire. Realistic commands and such, and giving you an excuse to follow those commands. Thats what could top call of duty, the Half Life 2 engine would be very good for this but a game with the Half Life 2 engine isnt out yet, so im fairly pessimistic about that. (at this rate, Bloodlines will be out before Half Life 2 its self)

Keep talking buddy. You obviously know little about WW2. The largest tank battle in the war was between the French and Germans. After the French lost (inflicting casualties on the German). The Dunkirk retreat was issued. I forget the name of the battle. It took place in the vally behind the French Defense wall (The Maginot line). I'll look it up on the internet.

Although I guess you guys will simply deny it and won't believe me. Simply because thier French.

Oh yeah! The French helped you guys fend off the Britains in the war of Independance.

Well thats my 2 cents.

the french had tanks?

Sputty

Yep, good tanks too, but the Somusa(or Somosa, I forget) wasn't made enough before France lost the war. Alot of people think the germans had massively better tanks, but at the start of the war the Allies had more men, better tanks, better artillery and such. They lost purely to tactical blunders and mistakes really(ardennes for example)

Everay

incorrect, the germans bypassed that stationary defencive line. also, the largest tank battle was between the germans and russians, 1000 tanks.

and info on the new CoD is already out, i belive its called Finest hour, again, you will be russian, american, british, but this time, youll play as 7 different people over the course of the game, including a black tank commander, and a female russian sniper. but realy, the expantion i wanna see, is the CoD: B17 flying fortress air war, one, like, you get to go through several positions on the plane, and such, mostly the game would be alot of scripted events, but nothing is wrong with that.

EDIT the battle was at Prokhorovka. 800+ Russian Tanks of the 5th Guards Tank Army clashed with some 600 armoured verhicles of the 3 SS divisions of the Reich marking the climax of Operation Citadelle or the Battle of Kursk as it is better known.

Yes I know. The Germans simply went around it using the old Blitzkrieg tactic.

errr... whoops! Forgot about that battle. Yeah Kursk was a heavy tank battle.

useless fact: blitzkrieg wasn't even called blitzkrieg by the germans - it was a phrase coined by a newspaper reporter.

There are no games about the Korean war, for whoever asked it. At least not reasonably-known games... maybe some obscure one.

They need a Civil War era game like these. Man a cannon, an ironclad, get a musket or Springfield, get on a horse...

that would rock.

Everay

hardy har har, yea, fire off 3 shots a minute, no way to evade the enemy, 2 shots a minute with a cannon. if anything, that game, wouldnt be a game, but a movie, you have little control over.

though, korean war, that sounds like a great idea.

A: I Hate Pants: I mean an FPS. Any idiot could make a strategy game like that.
B: The Polish were the only nation to have a significant calvary force at the start of WW2. Time Life's "WWII" (which I own) describes the Pomorske Calvary Brigade attempting to break through German Panzers. They failed.
C: Actually, there was some fighting at the Maginot. Army group C feinted an attack towards the Maginot line. I know this through the same book.

Anyway, here's my idea for the Cold War Gone Wrong game (FPS).

Chapter 1- you're in Korea. UN forces have pushed the North Koreans to the border with China. You fight in North Korea. However...

Chapter 2- China declares war on the USA. Millions of troops pour across the border. You gradually get pushed back to the 38th parallel, the dividing line between the North and South. Seems historical, until...

Chapter 3- At the request of North Korea and China, the Soviet Union crashes through. This chapter covers the retreat through Korea as troops are transported to defend the US. Nuclear weapons exchanges have not occured. A few bombers have been dispatched by both sides, they were destroyed. You are retreating full blast out of Korea. There is a mass evacuation in process.

Chapter 4- The United States has been invaded! Paratroopers have landed in British Columbia in Canada and Washington and Oregon in the United States. The Americas (with the notable exception of Cuba) prepare for invasion. The world is divided. World War III beings. You fight in Los Angeles, urban style, against landing Russians.

Chapter 5: The Soviets push you back to the Midwest. A nuclear attack has been launched against Texas. The Comintern (Communist International) has taken over parts of Canada, the US up to Utah, and is thrusting into Mexico. You fight on Salt Lake.

And so on...it would be cool if the campaign was dynamic- if your squad fails to take a certain area, it is lost, making the whole single player either winnable or loseable.

For all of you looking for a good ww2 game try ww2online.
No life bars in this game, a shot to the head and your done.
You can play anything you want anytime you want in a battle that never ends for Europe. Your not stuck in a planned battle area.(N.Africa and Pacific theaters will come one day)You could even run all the way across map if you want, although that would take about a week on auto-run.
You can be infantry, tanks, planes, boats, anti-air or anti-tank guns.

Im getting planetside for the future type combat, but il never stop playing ww2online until im dead or out of money...then I will sell blood and play some more.

P.S. I have seen some complaints about patches in PSU? They come out almost every month for ww2. :)
EDIT] This is also a good game for people that like team efforts, 98% of players in ww2 are in a squad.

for the guy that wanted a civil war game- SNES= north vs south i think its called. believe it was a kind of RTS game sorta im not positive tho.

for the cold war era- Freedom fighters. You lead a squad of ragtag urbanites against russian invaders (set cold war era)

I really like aztecs idea for dynamic gameplay. that would rock if for say you lost los angeles, therefore the soviets open a mexican front or something. very nice.

about this ww2online game, you gotta pay a monthly fee?

Dharkbayne

Yeah, and I don't think it's an FPS, it's more of a Squad based RTS

I like that part :D

We never had any action around here.

*leans out window and sees russian paratroopers filling the sky*

Seems I spoke too soon.

We always get alot of action around here

*leans out window hoping the paratroopers would be gone, but they are not*

Crap, why does it never work a second time.

*gets in the AA cannon that is now in his garden and starts blasting away*

AHHHHHHHH!!!!!

*gets captured and joins the communist forces* (who woulda seen that coming?)

How do you like my shiney new AK-47? :D

Wwiionline is an FPS all the way. Il try to post a screenshot.
And yes, monthly fee of $13.

This is view from commander posistion in a stuart tank. Each tank has 3 posistions at least, but one person can and usually does all 3. To the right are stuart driven by others and ahead is a panhard afv.
