View Full Version : Vehicle Timers

Here is an idea to cut down on the amount of vehicles in the game, and an actual penalty for losing them.

Instead of having the vehicle timer start the moment you buy a vehicle, start it as soon as the vehicle is destroyed/deconstructed/hacked. Could be used for MAX units too, but it shouldn't be unless they are made more powerful.

This would make drivers more wary of doing stupid things, as well as making AV more of an investment.

but what if u have the veh for a long time. like u get ur veh/aircraft u go out ,u take damage u repair it, then repeat. thhen finally u blow up.i do that all the time. it wuold suck to spawn again at a base then wait 5 min to get ur new veh after the last one u had lasted a long time. people are not paying $13 a month to wait around, plus there are other things in PS that need fixing.

I guess you believed wrong. It's still $12.99, not $15.95

I like the idea. I don't like it when I kill a tank and the crew is back on the field with another tank in less than a minute.

You don't have to sit and wait for the timer to elapse. You can always just hitch a ride or walk, or even grab whatever vehicle that comes with the package you bought (nearly all of them have more than one). If nothing else, grab an ANT and mow some people. That particular sport is very underated =P

I agree 100% with doing something against vehicles. Vehicles are a big part of Planetside; fair enough, but it's still a first person shooter. It seems to have degenerated to a tank sim, with a bit of foot slog to a base...to get a tank. It's a mess...and it wasn't like this when I first played :/ The gameplay is so many times better when you can shoot people.

Someone came up with a great idea on the PS forums having increse the timer on tanks to 10 minutes, flails 15, reavers 8 minutes and almost everything else on 5 minutes with the atvs and harasser on 3 minutes.

You can't start the timer when the vehicle is destroyed; it sounds like you completely misunderstand the purpose of having a vehicle timer in the first place. It is there so that you are penalized for being reckless, it is not not just a general penalty that you have to sit through for having the gall to use a vehicle instead of running around like rambo. If you are smart and skilled enough to survive for 5 minutes in your ride (which can be quite a feat when things are hot and hectic), there should be no waiting around aside from the spawn timer.

Vehicles are what make this game great, and multiply the potential strategy and tactics exponentially. BTW, if you hadn't noticed-- "pure" FPS games as a genre is slowly fading away. From BF1942 to Planetside, Unreal XMP, GTA and even (to a degree) Call of Duty, we are seeing more and more deepening of gameplay through the use of player controlled vehicles. I really believe that in a couple years, games launched with only first-person style are going to fade away. They may be the origins of most of our favourite games, but it just won't be "enough" for much longer.

The vechile timer is fair to most vechicles but i think its just about having tank after tank just spawning thats what get peopl mad 6 flails shooting their base at a time or or people who dont bother bringing a glue gun to repair their vechile because it survived the 5 minutes.

Vehicle timers are fine as they are. What needs to happen is a buff to AV across the board so vehicles will actually fear groups of infantry again.

I like the idea of increasing the vehicle timer, especially for the heavier vehicles. Scaled timers work great for me!

I don't think that there should be no penalty for a tank crew that barely manages to survive their 5 minutes. That's pathetic in a tank(or unfortunate). The bundled vehicle packs have other vehicles that they can drive, and if not, they need to learn to foot it! I don't feel that someone who can't manage to survive in an ant should be penalized the same as someone who can't survive in a Vanguard.

Doing this will increase the need for AMSes, decrease the insane number of tanks in the field, and improve the value of foot soldiers. All in all, I like it.

Indeed vehicle timers are just fine. Sony just needs to buff AV where it actually becomes some form of Anti-Vehicular instead of just Anti-MAX-at-range

WORST IDEA EVER

What would happen is all you support personnel
<<<<<<LIKE ME
will drop our vehicle certs, and you will lose your galaxies, deliverers, and AMSs because we aren't going to sit around waiting to support you, while you get to run around free of penalty. How about we penalize you for dying to often with a 5 minute timer that keeps you out of the fight.

I can't believe you want to wait more time to actually fight, We already have to wait around 5 minutes for a shuttle, 15 mins for a hack. Find a ride around a huge world which most people don't provide. Yet despite all this you want to punish people who actually take care of there vehicles and don't act like a tard with them by making them wait another 10 to 15 minutes for a tank or transport vehicle. You are absolutly nuts to recommend that.

Next you will want us to have to wait 2 to 5 mins for rein armor just because you want to drag out an already slow game.

The idea is not to increase waiting, but instead to increase foot soldiers, diversify the battlefield, and to give AV a purpose.

However, I have pretty much abandoned this idea, as those presented in my Complete Overhaul thread would probably be more effective.

My idea would be to add vehicle timers to the empire population modifiers. If you are the zerg, you would have to wait an extra X minutes to get your vehicle (depending on how larger your population advantage is). While the defenders would get a decrease of X minutes (depending on population). Would spice things up and make the zerging vehicles take extra precautions to keep their stuff alive, while not penalizing the lower population defenders (who are probably getting vehicles shot down rapidly).

Extending vehicle timers is a wholesale bad idea
