I get CTD's all the time with my new computer.... Could it be overheating?
The recent one restarted my computer...
The strange thing about these CTD's is that they just jump out to the desktop REAL quickly, no unloading whatsoever, no harddrive working, nothing... (might just be that the computer is fast).

Yeah Ps does that sometime, if you not OCing you shouldn't have heating problems(except if you have very poor cooling, liek a stock HFS on a 3.2 that is only cooled by 2 120mm 20cfm fans, like my friend that just putt together this sweet system).

Well, it's a Shuttle chassi, with a heatpipe cooling system. It's attached to the Processor, and got 4 pipes leading to the main fain.
First it wasn't attached correctly, so I could hardly get to the Windows installer before the computer shutdown (and there was a red light on the motherboard). But these CTD's arn't the same, they doesn't turn of the computer, only PlanetSide.

Could it just be that the heatpipe isn't correctly placed on the processor?

no you would see a CPU failed message most likely, and it would reboot. Your not overheating. try updating your drivers ifg you havent done so already.
Also about how often? A crash a day(in ps that is), or maybe twice is normal

Well how often varies. At first I could play for 30 mins to an hour. And then BAM! CTD. And sometime's about every 5 to 15 minutes...
I had one, where I just CTD'd, got back into the game, and then into the HART (it arrived as I got there). And then BAM! CTD again!
Ok, what drivers should I update? I've updated my sound card, network card, video card etc.

What drivers could cause this?

Does this happen with any programs other than planetside? When did this start happening?
Also, try reinstalling or updating DirectX.

It started happening with this new computer ;) (got it yesterday).
Does this happen with any programs other than planetside? When did this start happening? Yeah, it happened in C&C Generals also.
I've installed Direct X 9.0b now I had 9.0, Hope it helps.

Ok... it didn't help. Crashed after 5 minutes.... didn't notice a Temp change though. But that could be because PlanetSide takes 100% of the processor, so MMB never updated... I don't know...
It blows anyhow :(

What are your error msgs. and what are your vid card setting, to start. IN what way does it CTD?
GreyFox

NO error message at all. The game just dissapears, and there is the desktop looking all lonely and sad...
It goes quick too.

Try updating Your 9600XT drivers get hte 4.1'a of www.guru3d.com
On the bright side you must get great FPS when your not crashing!
That Type of CTD used to happen to me all the time but it went away

I thought I was installing the latest drivers for it... I'll check out that link and see.
Yes I do get great FPS with everything cranked up even.
Loving all 5 minutes of it, really, I do.

You could always try a format and reinstall. If that doesn't help, then it's most likely a hardware problem.

I got this computer yesterday, I recently formated it and installed windows! :D

Well, I've installed those DNA drivers to the vidcard... but it didn't help...

Perhaps something went wrong the first time.
It could possibly bad sectors on your hard drive. Could be bad RAM. Could be a motherboard chipset problem. Could be completely software related. It could be any number of things. I'm just trying to help you narrow it down.
I suggest you reinstall windows and then install nothing but DirectX, your drivers, and PlanetSide. If it's still crashing after that, then you've probably got a hardware problem.

could it be a setting on his Vid card like one of the GL or DX settings making the game disapear? are one or any of the setting incompatible with PS?

wow, they really need to put a cap on how big someones sig can be.... <cough Ati cough>
Anyhow.. Did you try different vid drivers? ( if someone already suggested that sorry.. i didnt read through all the crap )  :D
there is a cap, but Ait is under it, or he just knows when sigbots does his scans and avoids it. If your sig is a pixle to big or a Bit to large sigbot will delete it

Ok, I believe the RAM might be the problem... Gonna check it out as soon as possible.

Well I removed the RAM's and reconnected them, and I could play an entire game of C&C Generals now.
So it might work now, not sure. Gonna play planetside a while and see.

Gotta find a windows version of some program like GoldMem... :(

Assuming you've got 2 512mb sticks of ram. Try taking out just one at a time and see if it stabalizes. If there is a problem with your ram it's probably only occuring on one of the sticks.

I'm running a program called MemTest-86 now on the new computer (this is the laptop), and I'm getting alot of "Failing Address" I'm not sure if it's bad or not, but it sounds like it is bad....
It also says Good, Bad, Err-Bits, etc. And under good it says different hex numbers like ffffff etc, and the same under Bad, and the same under Err-Bits. The Failing Address says; (for instance) 0003feda49c - 956.0Mb etc...
EDIT: I've noticed that all the Failed Address is above 512mb though, that might indicate that it's one of the memory-sticks are faulty...

Yeah I know, I'm gonna try it out today.

I was having the same problem a week ago and was going to point you in the direction of Memtesters.
Take a stick out, run the test. Run the default one, the other one will take 5 hours to run. If you notice a lot of error messages, you know it's that stick that's bad. Take it out and put the other one back in. Run the test. If there are more error messages, you have two sticks of ram that are bad. Hunt down the person you bought the PC from, wring their neck and ask them why do you put bad ram in my computer.

This is strange, and rather discomforting...
I've been running tests on both memories now (never fully completed them, but I got errors pretty early last time). And I havn't found an error on any of the sticks... :(
This seems to indicate that the motherboard is faulty, the other memory slot is broken that is... :(
I will try the other memory stick again, and then in the other slot... I hope it's not the motherboard...

Seems like I've been testing them for a bit too short, well I'm still testing to see if they are faulty, and it seems like one of them are, now I'm gonna rule out the possibility that both are, or that the memory slot on the mobo is in fact faulty...
GreyFox
2004-02-06, 10:53 AM
DAMN!
It seems as if it's one of the memory slots that is faulty! :(
Can it be something else? Like a bios setting, etc?
Both memorys show errors when they are tried on the same slot, but none of them show errors on the other slot...
DAMNNNN!!!

dude use the Edit button so you don't ave to make so many posts.
I would take your barebone (keep all of the stuff in it tha you bought yourself, take only the barebone back) and return it for a new one, and see if that works.

Would appear as though one of the slots is bad.
I'm pretty sure there's nothing you could do in the bios that would cause memory errors in only 1 slot. You could always reset the bios to its fail safes just to be sure.
