View Full Version : Galaxy's Gun Placements

So I've been thinking about the Galaxy and how it could be changed in order for it to be useful again. While there are plenty of possible suggestions, I just wanted to focus on one: it's gun placements. To be frank, they're terrible, and I'm probably not the only one who's thought this. The tailgunner is okay, but the side guns have very little arc. Therefore, any airplane can easily swoop in from the top or bottom (as long as you avoid the tailgunner field of fire) to chip away at a Gal until it explodes. So the Galaxy is largely unarmed, since its guns can only cover the sides, back, and part of the bottom.
So a feasible, yet effective solution would be to take the side 20mm guns and place one on the top of the plane and one on the bottom. Mount them on small turrets so they can rotate a full 360 degrees and swivel from 0 degrees (level) to 90 degrees straight up (or straight down for the bottom turret). That way the firing area of each gun is a hemisphere that can very effectively engage air targets. The bottom gun would also serve as a light anti-ground weapon as well.
This change would effectively protect the entire Galaxy. The two weak spots would be directly in front and directly at the sides, but an enemy airplane would have to fly straight for those sections in order to avoid incoming fire, a tactic that would require many passes and therefore take much longer. I figure that this would be a much simpler change than a complete overhaul of the Galaxy. If possible, I would even add another 20mm gun to the existing ones for extra firepower. The Galaxy could use some more perks, anyhow.
So those are my ideas. Comment on them or post your own. :)

i like, but the gal is hardly used anyways.
Maybe if it gots its 75mm cannons back from beta

Yeah, the Galaxy was dwindling in popularity even before the Lodestar. And now that we can get Sunderers airborne, the Gal is used even less.
I've heard of idea of bringing back the 75mm cannons, but I have mixed feelings about that. It could really cause some balance problems, or it could be a great addition. *shrugs*

The Devs will implement Continental Dominion, and then add a capitol building, which will be diffrent from the others. During the design phase, someone (dev or one of the many clear-minded players) will suggest a vulnerability that allows Galaxies to insert troops cleanly. Should that be implemented, people will be calling for Galaxy buffs.
Until then, I really wouldn't hold my breath on it. What we have now makes the Galaxy too cumbersome to bother with. Only the addition of something like what I posted would put it to real use again.
But I could be wrong...

Well putting th ehart back to 10 min, or making it 15 min is the best option, why take a gall when you could hart and be there now?

My outfit uses the gal all the time for tube drops or hacks I think its great. I do agree about the gun placments though, perhaps they should but the gun on the top and bottom, kind of like the millenium falcon, make the rotate around like on the skyguard, but keep the bullet size the same.

Wing guns, below wings, all the way down.
(Or slightly infront, with a tilt up a little)
Rear gun should really be on the roof :P
Perhaps wtih a higher caliber, like the 25mm that the Liberator sports on the rear.

Heh, or SPACE button for gunners switches gunner positions :P

Basic layout would allow for only a very narrow blindspot against air, and be able to assault ground targets pretty well :P

25mm is only used on the Liberator tail gun isn't it?
How come they didn't use on other vehicles? It's seems like a good choice for tanks like the Prowler.

A 25mm does a lot of damage. Combine a 25mm, or even 20mm with the damage output you already get with the main guns on the Prowler and it would be unstoppable. If any competent crew concetrated it's fire they would absolutely demolish any enemy tank they came up against with no contest. Far from the worst idea I've heard, but I really think it would simply be too much.
I think the worst idea I've ever heard mentioned was putting dual 35mm guns on the Prowler. Not only is a 35mm a really poor choice for what those guns are generally used for (anti air) but dual 35mm would kill tanks almost as fast if not faster than the main gun

so what are the 25mm good for? and what ground vehicles would you put them on? Because it seems quite a waste to have it feature on only one vehicle.....

Last week, late a night me and my Outfit member's were on Amerish Dog Fight'n in galaxy's was good shit if ya ask me, it was great gett'n kills from the Side and Tail Gunn'n Positions, in th ehand of a capable Gal pilot no reaver stands a chance. It's not like we had anywhere to go we starte chase'n Reaver's and Mos's after awhile

Well, the 25mm is a great anti-air weapon. I think the Devs wanted to give the Liberator something more potent than a 20mm cannon to fend off targets, so they just made a new class. But I agree: having it on only one vehicle seems like a waste. Upgrading the Galaxy's current weapons to 25mm would make a lot of sense at this point. I'm not sure if any vehicles should have it, however. The standard 20mm most vehicles sport (except the Prowler... grr...) seems to do plenty of damage to tanks and infantry, I'm not sure if they should be any more powerful. Keeping the 25mm to aircraft would present fewer opportunities for the guns to be used against ground targets, though they would be pretty effective if they did.

I would love a 25mm on the Lighting

I'd agree with putting them on the Gal in place of what's already on it.
As for what ground vehilces to put it on I honestly don't know. The lightning is about the only one I can think of but I think that too may give it too large of a defense against aircraft. I can already take down a single Reaver of Mossy 1 on 1 if they don't get the drop on me most of the time. With a 25mm I have a feeling it'd only be that much easier which, while great for me, could really piss off some reaver pilots.

Meh, I always liked the idea of putting Flak cannons on the rear, bottom, and top.

We could put the 25mm on a defense vehicle designed specifically for taking out enemy armor and aircraft....

Damn, and here I was thinking Galaxy was an aircraft used for assaulting bases and towers.
Good point Rayder.

Now what would be amusing is if they replaced HA with a cert that let you get a deployable machine gun nest that had a 25mm in it.
