I remember someone tossing this title out awhile back so I picked it up seeing as I have a shiney new computer to play it on. The game is kind of buggy but so far it's rather fun. It's kind of like every space sim I've ever played rolled into one. Worth picking up imo if your PC can handle it.
Has anyone else here played it for long? I've got a few questions on some things and the documentation and tutorials aren't exactly all inclusive. :p

Perhaps a link? I always liked the Freespace series.

Thanks Derf
Doesn't really answer what I'm looking for though :(
Ok it appears you've played this quite a bit so maybe you can answer it. How the hell do I give commands to my other ships? I can't tell other ships I own to do anything so while I own two freighters and a fighter, 2 of the three do nothing but sit in dock
Missions, I can't get them. I've gotten numerous promotions for both trading and killing pirates, but no one will take me on for missions.
Money making, what do you reccomend? Just haul stuff until you have enough for some stations or what?
Enemy AI. Does the enemy ever fight back? I've killed dozens of pirates but they never do anything but sit there stationary while I shoot them. Now while that's easy cash and rank it gets kind of boring after awhile.

To give orders your freighters need trade software on them I think. Have you palyed all the tutorials yet? IF you havent it would be a really good idea to do so. The first thing you need to do to give orders is to open your "owned property" menu. Then you can issue commands (going to stations, sectors) from there. I hope that helped a bit. The game is so horribly complex it is difficult to help unless you have a specific problem.

All my ships have every upgrade in software and equipment I can find (except jumpdrives) so yes they all have trade software MkI and MkII. I can go into the menu that has all the options like [Dock with] [Fly to] but all the options are grayed out and I can't select any of them. It won't let me actually give any orders :(
I've tried the tutorials a couple of times, and probably will give them another shot tmorrow but so far the scrpts have borken halfway through on the ones I've tried.

Which mission have you completed so far? I would suggest stopping after the second one.

Hell, just quit when you get the Argon Express. It's a nice, fast transport, unlike the mercury, which goes at about 2 miles an hour. Much further and the Khaak invade and blow up all of your factories and stuff. When you get money for it, buy a capital ship and good shields. Screw lasers, you can just ram the other ships. It's a bit like when a car gets hit by a semi. Only this semi is about 5x as big as a normal semi.

I have only one problem with it. The controls are horrible.

You get used to 'em eventually. But I hate how it never goes far enough... until it goes too far and too long.

I'm on the mission where I'm supposed to go talk to the Argon one. and get told to go visit the temple and yeah I sorta stopped doing the plot missions for the time being. Once I have a shitload of money saved up and a nice little fleet maybe I'll continue them.
But anyways, any idea why I can't give orders? It's a litte annoying =\

Hmm. When you select "navigation" What options do you see? post a screenshot of the navigation menu.

This is the best way to start out as far as I know:
After completeing the second mission (with the argon express), go back to the equipment dock and sell the argon express (before you talk to what's-her-name). That should net you about 320k. Then go talk to the lady and get your beat up mercury. Tell it to go to the shipyard and have it repaired. Then buy yourself a Solar Power plant and set it up in one of the sectors that has a crystal fab (the only resource Solar Power Plants need). Make sure you pick a sector with lots of sun (150% is good).
Solar power plants are very profitable. Once you get 3 transports, set 1 to buy crystals and set 2 to sell Energy sells (set your sell price to about 20). Then let the game run on SETA over night. You'll be loaded in no time. I found it best to use 2 boron dolphins for selling energy cells (with full engine tuning and 2000 cargo space), and a capped pirate ship for buying crystals.
When you get enough money, buy a Nova and deck it out with 3 25mw sheilds, an ion disruptor, and the most powerful lazer you can get. They are great for capturing ships. Doesn't hurt to have full rudder tuning either.

By order of Searo, this game is inferior to Escape Velocity Nova. :D
Seriously, EVN sounds way better than this....

Does X2 have 6 different plotlines, around a hundred different fully pilotable by the player ships, several hundred fully usable by the player weapons, and an excellent storyline that is movie material in some cases?
Didn't think so.
And you talk about graphics....

Does learoy the shareware enforcer kill you in X2 the threat? Didn't think so. Besides, what is the point in piloting ships unless you can actually see out of the cockpit.

Hmm. When you select "navigation" What options do you see? post a screenshot of the navigation menu.Erm do you mean the sector navigation map or the universe nav map?
Actually, here, start from hitting enter to open the menu and go from there to where you need a screen shot of. There are way too many menus
I'm honestly beggining to suspect that I simply don't have access to the menu I need to give ship orders, which strikes me as odd.

Press S C and it should go to the command window
Mr1337Duck
2004-02-16, 12:14 AM
Then 1 should be navigation, and you could, say, tell it to dock at a nearby station to test it out.

You need to select the ship you want to give orders to under the "owned property" menu. Then from there you can issue orders.
Happy lil Elf
2004-02-16, 11:32 AM
Ok, that's what I thought you meant. That's the problem though, I can't issue orders. When I go in to the ship's command console it's set on [none] for current order and when I go into the broadcast menu I can select broadcast to all M5/M4/M3/etc. on three different lines but I once I get into that screen all the options like [dock with...] and grayed out and I can't select them.
I'll get you some screenshot of everything from the specific ships command console on (command console, broadcast and orders screen) as soon as I can take it and get it hosted.

Got the pics Derf, once Gerbil lets me know the links I'll toss em up. I think I found the problem by comapring to the manual though. On the command console screen there should normally be other options under "1 None" like "2 Navigation". Those simply aren't there for me, or rather the only one that comes up is "1 None". No idea why as I have nav software installed on all three ships but it just doesn't show. Only thing I can think of is to try uninstalling again, doing a naked dance around my PC while playing drums and then reinstalling. Oh well now that I think I've identified the specific problem, off to the Egosoft forums to see if anyone else has encountered this >_<
On a side note I fired up Freelancer in 1600x1200 and found out not only that it runs smooth as glass in that res on the new machine but that the game can get even prettier than it was before

Ok, I think I may have solved the mystery with some help off the Egosoft forums. Apparently in your Scripts folder there are supposed to be somewhere around 123 files.
I have 10 in mine. That's right, 10.
That certainly explains why I was having trouble just about every tutorial I tried in addition to missing a ton of commands in game. Time to try another reinstall I guess. If that doesn't work anyone wanna host me their scripts folder? :p

If it doesn't work, I could send you mine, I could either host it, or you can come on the IRC channel and I'll DCC it to ya

Is there a demo?
The best space sim would have to be Freelancer/Tachyon: The Fringe (tie).

no not yet, and i tried out universal combats demo, that blew goats. i was in a star fighter, flew into the fraw, seconds later after hyperspacing in, something i couldnt defend myself from, or see, blew me away, 1 shot, i was like, wtf? and ground combat on that game sucks, so does all combat for that matter.
Happy lil Elf
2004-02-17, 11:22 PM
Now that the AI works I've found I'm not a realy big fan of the combat (of course shooting at ships that just sat there wasn't exactly entertaining either). If I was on crank I might be, but as it is it kinda strikes me as sorta like trying to kill flys by shooting at them with a fully auto BB gun. Flys that are made out of depleted uranium, have rocket boosters strapped on their asses and are constantly trying to fly through you that is.
In other words, combat is a little too fast paced. I think I'm basically going to try and ignore it until I have a few really big and nasty ships that the enemies can ram themselves to death on.
I also kind of agree with Sputty, now that the game is working and I've had a chance to play with the various commands. The control scheme isn't very good. The thing is, I don't know how they could make it much better with the amount of things you can do (although allowing me to use the mouse to navigate the menus would be nice).
I think it'll be a very fun game once I get things rolling again, it's just gonna take a bit to get there.
Question for those that have been playing for awhile. Once you've deployed a factory, will it start to make cash automatically or do you have to supply it and sell it's products with your own ships?
Dharkbayne

You gotta set up trade ships. I got a haxed argon titan, with like 0192058 shields, I killed everything, bases, fighters, other capital ships, by ramming them.
