Ok, I got 2 choices...
These are both Epiphone guitars, I can't afford a real gibson, although I like the action and playability of the Epiphone replicas.
A. Cherry Red G-400

http://epiphone.com/default.asp?ProductID=24&CollectionID=3
PROS - Favourite looking guitar of all time, crunchy sound, nice to play
CONS - Long Neck
B. Translucent Red Les Paul studio (couldn't find exact picture, but just imagine the whole guitar as the outer red colour)
http://fragmatic.is-a-geek.net/pics/lespaul.jpg
http://epiphone.com/default.asp?ProductID=43&CollectionID=6
PROS - Damn nice to play, a more versatile sound (not that I want to play other stuff), reaaaly nice neck action (short)
CONS - cost, not too nice looking compared to other les pauls.
Take your pick!
Edit - Images are down, someones raping my bandwidth again >.<

Get the G-400, make an album that goes Triple Platinum, then go off and then buy your beer and hookers.

I would suggest the g-400. Prolly give you the overdrive and crunch you want. Used to have a Gibson sg once, what a beauty.

Not much between them, both humbucker pickups, same tone / vol setup. I'd go with the Les Paul copy because it has a thicker solid body so you get a fatter sound and more sustain than the G400. Vgood if you are in to metal and fancy doing a bit of Metallica or Mudvayne.

The construction of the body has nothing to do with it, it's an electric guitar, it's only in the electrics.
As stated, the SG has better pickups edged towards a heavier sound
And mudvayne? Puh-lease :p

I have the G-400, and love it. I haven't tried the LesPaul myself, but I have a couple o' friends who can testify to the G-400 being the better.
Buy a tuba. Then you can kill whomever makes fun of you for playing a tuba, with the tuba.
I dont see many peopl getting killed by a guitar, as its in ineffective melee weapon.

 Yes, a guitar typically shatters upon impact, leaving the victim shocked but largely uninjured. You can, however, use one of the guitar strings as a crude garrote, but that is assuming your target is blissfully unaware of your presence.
G-400 looks nice, but a short neck is always good.

Take it form a tuba player. If you get a suzaphone, you can fuck some shit up.
I got a body count of at least 12 before they got me.

Frag, it's got to do with resonance. I solid gutar will feed back the resonance to the strings, so the more solid, the richer and more sustain you can create. If you've ever played a H0fner electric accoustic (note, NOT an accoustic with is wired for amplification) you will know you get a more tinny sound, even with twin humbuckers and selecting the fret pickup. This is because it's a hollow body.
Agreed the pickups will make a difference to.
BTW, if you listen to Mudvayne you will realise that some of their stuff if very technical, the song structures, chord progressions and syncopation (sp?) lends itself more to jazz than metal, but some people just don't get it.

I don't know anything about guitars, except that you pluck the string and it makes a noise. The only thing I could have said was that those colors suck....
