Bastardized Win98 to XP Networking

Well. when I first got my new comp I networked it to my old one with a switch in the basement. The network half worked. My new XP rig could see the old one. Both could go online. I wiped the Hard Drive on the old one b/c of spyware and stuff. Now I cant get it back on the network letalone online. One thing I cant do is reset my IP. I think I should start there but I cant reset it becuase of the bastardized win 98. Whenever I try to access IP Config I see a dos window for a split second and then it closes. Wtf?

to keep the dos window to stay, you need to go to run then type 'cmd' without quotes of course. Then when you get a prompt, type 'ipconfig'.

Netowkring XP with lesser windowes is difficult, if XP is using NTFS win 98 can't use anything on the XP xomp but the XP comp can use stuff on the 98

Clarify it a bit for me.
Computer A = Windows 98se ??
Computer B = Windows XP SP1a ??

Your affect domain cannot be narrowed because you didn't say wether you could change the IP or wether you didn't know how to get to it. If you can change the IP by going into the network connections menus and network properties menus, try the Class A IPs below.

Another reason could be drivers, so make sure the drivers are correct. Also make sure that the resources being used by the NIC are not interferring with any other devices.

Try setting the IP address to a private Class A address for both machines.
A = 10.10.20.2/24
B = 10.10.20.3/24

Then see if you Can ping A from B and B from A. If you get no connection, then make sure the lights on the both NICS are light.

It connected to the network before you reformated it you said, and now it cannot, which means that either it is getting an incorrect IP address, or the drivers are malfunctioning. Try messing with both and come back about the Networking thing, its a sinch.

On the win98 machine, dont go run, cmd then ipconfig!

On windows 98 the Dos command prompt can also be run through
Start -> run -> type "command"

Ipconfig /? "should give you all the options"

K I got the old one connected to net. now just need to get them networked.

On the windows 98 Computer :
1). Start -> Run -> type C:\
2). Right-click and create a new folder named temp
3). Right-flick the folder and select properties
4). You should start on the general tab, you want to click on the sharing tab
- If you do not see a sharing tab, do the Following steps
-1). Start -> Settings -> control panel
-2). Double click network adapters in windows 98, it might be something named differently.
-3). Two things, fist in the list of adapters you want to make sure "Client for microsoft networks" appears, if it does not click add, then select client and then select "Client for microsoft networks". There should also be two boxes under that list of adapters, one should say file sharing, and the other print sharing, make sure the file sharing box is selected. If those boxes are not there, try clicking add and see if there is a client that is "File and print Sharing". Add it that way. (been a while since I last used Crap98)
5). With that done, if you go back to C:\ and right click on folder temp, you should have a share tab. Enable sharing on full control.
6). Go to the windows XP machine and go to Start -> Run -> type "\\computeripaddress\temp"
Here is an example of what it would be if the windows 98 computer was 192.168.2.12
\\192.168.2.12\temp

You should be able to access it that way, some of the steps may be a bit off being as they could be a cross between windows 2000,XP, 98SE, and 3.1 so try to play with it if my steps aren't exactly on.

When all else fails just google it. There are lots of walkthroughs on how to do it on windows 98.
