-Warning- Im about to compare Planetside to a number of different games to get my point across. plz dont start your replies with "you cant compare PS to XXXX cos its a different type of game!"
My main concern about Planetside will be the "Class" aspect, even though I understand there will be no classes in the sence of the word.

-Team fortress classic - You have the ability to change classes at the flick of a menu screen
-Tribes 2 - you can change your Rig (sorta makes up a class) when you respawn
-Everquest - you pick your class and take months to build it (no changing)
-Dues Ex - Skill/implants where permanent. No going back

Scenario - You've played around in the VR training for an hr or so and decided you wanna be a Tank driving Medic with heavy weapons cert, so you built your Character in that direction, after a few days/weeks you realize that maybe, Light tank, field engineer, light weapons would have been a better choice.

How will Planetside handle this? people might want to see how their classes work "in the field" and Im not sure you can get the feel for your profession in the VR training.

In everquest getting to max level (65) can take anywhere from 6 months to a year, a longass time.
I realize PS has only 20 "levels" but how long will these take to earn?
If you make a "Bad" certificate choice are you stuck with it unless you go back and start your character over?

Your thoughts?

(ps If this turns into any kind of Flame war about derisor music or anything stupid and non planetside related I hope when you wake up tomorrow you stub your big toe on something hard!!)

We currently have "unlearn" set at 24 hours, not seven days. We determined that a week was ridiculous, but 24 hours might be about right because it discourages rampant change (thus encouraging specialization), but lets you set up for a big battle if there's a niche that needs to be filled in your Outfit.

What does this mean exactly? We can change a cert after waiting 24hrs? or if we want to take back a mistake, it has to be done in 24hrs after the mistake? or something totally different.

It means you can unlearn a cert, wait 24hours and then get a new one. In other words it takes 24 before you can change to a different "class".

Ah, ok, makes sense

Good call by the devs :)

That's a perfect set of time. I can't just become a heavy weapons guy to take a base from the CDL, but if we are organizing a 4 am strike, I have enough time to get everyone organized and every role filled. Pimptastic!

Pimptastic it is indeed.

But can you unlearn every cert in 24 hours or just one per 24 hour?
Cause if you can completly cange your char in 24 hours, it would remove the specialization aspect (IMO).

Frst of all, have to differ between a cert and cert points...

I think what SJ is saying is that you can unlearn one cert pr 24 hours and get those cert points back.

Can you still have 3 characters in one account? If so you could just swap characters and fill a different class in well under 24 hours. It does however mean you have to get 3 characters up to a good standard.

Just checked official faq and it say 4 characters per world server.

I asked dave this in chat, and he said you can unlearn all certs.

... I think this kills specalization personally.

I believe it's 4 per server, not 4 total.

Just a bit confusing that he uses the word account.

Tbh I was under the impression of number of characters per account till I checked the FAQ. I should have editited my post better to reflect that

Just to be sure, that's 24 hours real time not 24 hours of playing time right?

Agreed. With this in game as is, I really think it is killing a huge part of being in a MMO which is being specialized, when you can be something totally different.

For example, in a MMORPG I would always put people on my "friends list" (think of it like a buddy list on AIM) who fit the specialization I lacked. Now I could friend a Galaxy pilot and the next day he could be a MAX....

24 hours is rediculously short.

I find the unlearning wording confusing, I think it works like this.
"You can instantly unlearn any cert in PS but you have to wait 24 hours before you get those cert points back to buy another cert with."

24 hours might be too short but I think they had absolutely the right idea in drastically reducing the time limit. I think if you can't unlearn certs relatively quickly there will be a multitude of alts in PS. (quietpilot, quietmax, etc . . .)

I'm not quite sure that's exactly how that works. I think you actually need to wait 24 hrs before you can even have the option to unlearn the cert but who knows. We'll find out soon enough :D
