CHICAGO (Reuters) - McDonald's plans to remove oft-criticised Super Size french fries and soft drinks by the end of the year, part of broader plans to simplify its menu and offer choices that appeal to consumers' heightened concerns about health.

McDonald's, the world's largest fast-food company, said on Wednesday it is making the changes to "support a balanced lifestyle" strategy. They come as the company and many of its rivals move to offer foods that diverge from traditional fatty fast-food fare, including more entree-sized salads, chicken sandwiches, fruit and milk for children.

The Super Size option, a seven-ounce fries carton and 42-ounce drink, has been targeted by critics as part of the cause of a growing obesity crisis in the United States.

McDonald's said in a prepared statement that drinks will still be available as a promotional option.

The Super Size fries contain 610 calories, 29 grams of fat, 390 milligrams of sodium and 77 grams of carbohydrates, according to analysts.

Every time I've ordered supersize fries there it's been no more fries than I'd get in a large anyhow. The container is larger, but it's not completely filled so it's pretty much an equal amount of fries.

I do like that McDonalds is trying to spin this like they actually care about people's health and not like they've realized they can fleece more money out of people.

Not I prefer to go to McD's, but if I happen to find myself in one Im not getting a grease-burger. And besides, their salads arent that bad. Actually, they're pretty good. And the dressings are better than subway (fat-wise). And It seems that in my area only "Skank" Subway's exsist.

So yea, I guess if I wanted health food "quickly" (avoiding the term fast) Ive got, KFC (nope), Hardees (GOD no), BK (whats the diff) pizza hut (nope again) and a steakhouse (good but expensive).

Im not a super-health minded kinda person. But when Im out with my friends and I can see the grease dripping off their burgers, or the shine from the fries, it does change my choice on the menu.

I've worked at Wendy's. We actually grill our burgers and keep them fresh. Mcdonald's likes to "grill press" thier burgers and then store them in bins.
