I work at an Internet cafe, and we leave them on all day long, and sometimes when we are there late.

Leaving your PC on all the time is a bad habit. It's bad for it. The longer you leave your PC running the more likely windows will crash the next time you use it. You need to shut down so your memory can be cleared and leaks can be fixed. Another reason is for security purposes. The more your comp is on, the more susceptible it is to remote attacks while your asleep/away.

My computer sleeps from 1130 PM to 6 PM. I'd say it had quite the break in-between startups.

I turn it off at night when I go to bed. When I get up I turn it on and **** around a bit before school at 10:30, at that time I put it on standby untill I get home at 4:00.

Well using a mac is similar to yelling binary through a phone, so I put my vote there.

The real wear and tear damage to a computer occurs starting and stopping it. Everything in a computer is in two states, on or off, 0 or 1, electricity or none, open circuit or closed circuit.

The worst for hard drives is turning them on and turning them off. Leave a computer on will do LESS harm to the actual physical computer than turning it off.

I turn the computer in my room off everynight. All the servers and media computers are 24/7. Whatever you do, continue to do it. If it is off, leave it off, if it is on leave it on :)

You suck.

RAM Def XT + Good Security > Your Intelligence.

No crashes.

24/7 unless crash (1nce or twice a month) or restart due to software install/config changes.

My housemates leave all their PCs on all the freakin time. I turn mine off when I'm not using it. But they leave their PCs on so everyone can read their lame away IM messages. In fact I had one housemate who went on a week and a half vacation and left up a message saying... I'm on vacation :) ... now here's the thing that gets me. You more than likely have already told everyone that is close to you that you are going on vacation you do not have to leave it on your away message!!!

And on to the tree hugger argument... besides vehicles the US uses oil for electricity. Less than 25% of our nations electricity comes from Nuclear or renewable resources (hydro, steam, solar). Therefore if you do not turn your computer off you are using a lot of electricity. That fan and powersupply (doesn't matter much if your HDD goes idle) is using at least 120-140 watts of power. Do you sleep with the lights on? Because that computer is using the same amount of electricity that 2- 60watt lightbulbs are (that's the standard house bulb) and almost as much as 2- 75 watt bulbs, even brighter.

So please turn the damn thing off...!!!

I leave mine on all the time.

I reboot about once every 6-8 months.

It's the Lighbulb theory.

When does a lightbulb burn out? it's when you turn it on. Computers are very similar if you keep it in a state of being warmed up and happily churning away then it will last a long time!

i leave my laptop on, and the sucker goes into hibernate when i'm not using it. that's my "off" state. i'm terrified of turning computers on and off because booting up a computer is like a box of chocolates, you never know when you're gonna get the nasty tasting one with the orange and brown paste shit inside that tastes like a gangrenous foot. I mean.. when i leave my computer "running," whether it be in hibernate or just plain on, i know that it's working correctly and that it won't go apeshit unless I do something stupid. Whereas, if i turn it on, i never know what to expect. Sometimes computers just do wacky shit when you turn 'em back on.

I defrag once a week, run scandisk and virusscan pretty often, and i do all sorts of nice purging activities to help save my computer from all the bad stuff.

I have a pretty nice machine, so i'm not going to let it get eaten by glitches.

Pentium 4 3.06 MgHz
512 Mb Ram, which i'm upgrading to 1024 over spring break.
An upgraded mobile radeon 128mb VRAM video card
And a whole bunch of other nifty shit.
Plus a cooler that i designed myself to set the computer in when i'm playing games that tax the computer's inards.. I don't want my baby to overheat.

i suppose it'd be smarter to play games on a desktop, but my laptop runs so damned fast i just can't bear to go play PS on my dad's desktop. It's a P4, 2MgHz with 512Mb RAM and a fucking VICIOUS video card. i think it's the most powerful GeForce out there right now. it's a nice card. it'd probably run better on that thing, but hey, it's MY laptop, damnit.. i'm gonna use it.

I turn mine off when I go to bed. I'm of the opinion that computers need sleep too, people just don't know it yet. :p

Saw what you want about eMachines. Theyre tanks and can take an assload of punishment. Ive dropped the case while transporting it for LAN parties at least a dozen times, have slayed so many virii on it that the CDC would be impressed, and, even after all that, the only problems I have are bad frames, the occasional faulty USB port, and a green monitor.

I let my computer sleep. Continually running hurts performance, and, well, I dont need any more of a performance hit while GAMING on an EMACHINE. God, I hate that company.

Electricity costs money. I keep it off. Besides, the mofugger has like 13 fans including several massive ones, it is loud for a computer.

I leave it on. Usually I'm dling something or idling on IRC. A big plus is that electricity here is pretty cheap because we're right by the Hoover dam.

Unfortunatly, my fundage only was 100 billz, so, I bought dinner/movie for the girl and a 69$ video card which is in the mail at the moment.

I do appreciate the offer, and would take it if I had the money to buy processor/ram. But, I dont :(

electricity is cheap because we live pretty close to some major Commercial Complexes (ATT, Lucent, Tellabs, Motorola, etc.) and residential power usage is soo low comparatively, it is dirt cheap
