dunno. I've heard good and bad about it. from all accounts they changed some of the original gameplay design concepts they had early on to adopt a more common MMORPG type of gameplay and ruleset. what was originally designed was cutting edge (but sadly reported to be not much fun), was redirected to a more sedate/commonplace set of rules and thinking.

I dunno, I have a friend or two breathlessly awaiting it...but they're pretty much wannabe superheroes anyway. I may check it out just to see whats what.

Beginning today, the beta doors to City of Heroes are swinging open for those who�ve purchased pre-order boxes. Those of you who haven�t snatched up your copy yet � what are you waiting for? what type of game is this and what's the general jist of it. RPG? FPS?

Right now, In Beta it is a blast. The ability to walk hit, smack some purse snatching bad guy, then fly away into the sky is just way too cool.
I can spend a few hours fighting crime, and then go stand on top of a building and look down. Its like all those times when I was a kid wishing to be a super hero, to help those without the means to help themselfs. Then I see a few guys trying to jack a car, and back to the streets I go.

Its a MMORPG but very different than any MMORPG that is out now. It is much more action oriented, you can literally kill being in one hit from the get go. Its like the real comic books. Goons are dropped easily, but mini boses require more tact and skill an strategy.

Its gonna be awesome getting a comic each month about the actual game, and maybe if I fight enough Crime I can be in the comic.

This game is going to change the way people see MMORPG's from now on. a lvl 1 can fight right along side a lvl 20 using the sidekick ability. There are 260000000000000000000000000 different costume variations. That means no two superheros will look alike. There is an intigrated contact system for huge amounts of exploration.

The best is that in upcoming expansions, you will be able to own vehicles and headquarters. My own personal batmobile, and batcave, rocking!

I heard that you could be either villian or hero. Again thats what I heard not sure if it's true or not.

Nope, just Heros for now, no villians, but I think they may implement it later or something. For now they are just talking about NPC villians, so no such luck for you nafarious types. ;)

Can anybody give me input on what the combat is like? From the interviews they make it sound good, but I can't handle yet another game with stale combat like FFXI. I love the concept, but unless the combat itself is fairly dynamic I know I'll bore quickly. Anyone?

I read more and more about this until I realized I really needed to get in the beta to try it out. Go down to your local EB, hand them $5 as a down on your pre-order and you get the magic disk that insures you will be in beta no later than 4/7. Worst case scenario I hate the game, cancel my order and get my 5 bucks back. If you do end up liking the game, they're allowing you a 3 day head start on release where you get to start up your character after the beta wipe and play the entire weekend before the game releases. Very nice.
