View Full Version : Today's music sucks.

I hate to say it but today's music sucks. Theres no such thing as good music nowadays. I know you may say theres good music, but in my opinion there really isn't(the old stuff doesn't count). Some people like punk, some like rap, some like metal. They're all their own genres. A couple years back music didn't suck, that's because everyone had their own style, there was diversity within those genres. I think I saw this whole thing coming. No one comes up with any original music anymore. They don't even try, they just learn an instrument, and try to get paid. That's all it is now, getting paid. So when I turn on net radio stations I keep hearing different bands, but the same thing is coming into my ears. Seldom do I hear a song that I actually like and has something different to it. I wish people would try and create something original. Theres a handful of good bands out there, some even still making music. But everyday I hear some band on the radio that I've never heard of, and most of the time they suck. So the people who pay these people are real idiots. They don't have much taste in music, OR they are forced to pay these people because they want to make money themselves and have to keep letting new bands get out on the scene, making their music seem original to some people. Like if I go back to stuff that was good 5 years ago such as Nirvana, I'd rather listen to that then the new shit asshats are pumping out today. Today almost all the music in one specific genre sounds the same. Todays lyrics also suck. Theres no meaning in them. They just say shit that rhymes. For example, if you listen to some of the most recen punk from a variety of bands, it all sounds the same. Theres some diversity but it isn't enough. I don't care if people disagree with me, just give me evidence supporting why.
Discuss.

Hmm, yes I somewhat agree. But hey, don't listen to me considering I mainly listen to Bach, Techno (especially European Trance) and J-music, mainly Anime themes. I'm definitaly not with the bandwagon.

:D
You obviously are musically uneducated in the music of today. Allow me to inform you of the good music coming out today. It's one of my fortes. :)

Most of the mainstream stuff right now is total bullshit, so i agree with you partially. There is good music out there right now, it's just a matter of finding it. :)

Ya I think thats why everyone doesn't like Linkin Park anymore. :/
They have to evolve some how, either way they can't play the same thing over and over again.
That includes other bands too. Stay too long the same and they will suck. if they change thier groove alittle, they alteast have a 50% chance of sucking less than before.

I agree with you completely. Too often have I heard other people's radio's or headsets playing songs that just sounds like random crap spliced together. I personally prefer Orchestral Music, and remixes. Wierd Al used to have some pretty funny songs, and sometimes the lyrics he used made more sense than the original versions. Techno mixes are cool too. (I am working on one myself using voices Neverwinter Nights)
HAH. Ther IS good music! The jokes on you!
...But its just not in America! Blame MTV.
I'm inclined to agree, but only to the point that 1024 did. There's still good music, but it's damn hard to find. By the way, 1024, congrats on getting the title changed.

Mogwai is the absolute and utter shit, listen to Cody and Christmas Steps first
Godspeed You Black Emporer are basically 12 people who make really long, really really good songs. Try "Sleep", a beautiful 25-minute instrumental
Portishead - try out "Numb" and "Wandering Stars", the haunting sound of the singer combined with the occasional distortions make it great
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Even though "Maps" is being played occasionally on MTV, it's not their best. Try "Y-Control" to see if you like their sound.
Mirah - "Cold Cold Water". Any song with wardrums gets points, but this one is also very well written and executed.
Massive Attack - "Teardrop" and "Inertia Creeps". Not much I can say here. They're a shining example of trip-hop done extremely well.
Hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

I agree. Music today sucks. No, I don't mean all, I just mean damn near everything. I'm sure there are some good ones, but they are few and REALLY far between. Almost all the bands I listen to are dead or broken up. Music needs to start getting better, cause I am tired of listening to the same bands over and over... nah, I guess I'm not.

Well, I'm going to have to...completely disagree on everything.
Just because YOU hate today's music, doesn't mean it sucks and people should stop listening to them, forever. No, because, as humans we are all different, and therefore we all have different tastes, talents, and interests. See, I hate all the old stuff that some people are obsessed about. It bores me. But that doesn't mean it sucks, I just don't like it. Just as some of you can't stand rap / R&B.
If you can't sense each bands different styles, maybe there's something wrong with you or you just don't listen enough to the band to realize.
The lyrics don't suck. Maybe there are quite alot of shit bad songs out there, but there always were shit songs out there, even in the old days.
Wake up, all it has ever been about has been getting paid and getting famous, regardless. People wouldn't do it otherwise.

Personally, I think Nirvana was a steaming pile of shit. 90% of the songs were meandering, no purpose, filled with angst and other bullshit that comes in bands a dime a dozen.
However, as much as I dislike Nirvana, I hate Sublime with a passion that is infinitly stronger in every degree. Every FUCKING song they have is like an aural root canal. Its not cool. Its not interesting. Maybe if youre a stoner you can appreciate it, but if I EVER see a Sublime member, I will punch them in the face.

That's because you're listening to mainstream punk, aka alternative. If you care to listen to some kick-ass punk rock, or some skull-bashing hardcore punk, then let me know. I have over 300 CDs to select from, and I'm talking about real punk, not that lame AFI/New Foound Glory crap that's all over the airwaves.
Real Punk. The kind kids used to fight over who was more punk than you. When punk meant mohawks, bracers, and more leather than a Village People concert. When it was punks versus skins. Not this fake poseur crap now.

Angel...you're full of shit. Music isn't about getting paid, to some people it is. It became about getting paid is that people loved it so much and thats all they wanted to do, and they took it to another level. But today most people dont care and they just care about money and women. Alot of bands have sold out. Metallica for example. Metallica's old music is 10x better than the stuff that they made recentally. Back then it was about the music, they didn't care about anything else. Now they don't care and its just for the money.
What I was trying to prove here was that the media is trying to make money off youth (us) by promoting music that sucks. MTV does most of this and because MTV is "cool" to those who aren't independent and want to be "cool" they think the muic MTV promotes is "cool" . Im not saying all music that MTV plays sucks, just most of it.
Music started out being a bunch of people around a campfire singing, or sailors singing on voyages. It only became about money until recentally.

Help you? Sounds like you've got a great basis for rock appreciation. Maybe you should go thank Mom and Dad right now. The Beatles are quite probably the greatest group of all time, the Who is absolutely solid, Zappa is an inspired choice for your parents to be into even if he's not really my thing, Dylan is one of the greatest lyricists of all time.
That doesn't mean that the groups you like should stop after 1979, but it does mean that you're probably going to have more eclectic tastes than your friends for a few years.

Everyone to their own taste. However: It can be established that most music now tries to sell you a lifestyle. All the music wants to push a certain type of clothing/certain feelings. Modern metal is either extreme anger or sadness. Modern rap encourages objectification of women, among other things.
Furthermore, they try to push clothing. See: And 1, Hot Topic, Fat Albert, etc.

:hate: = hot topic
WARNING: IF YOU ASK WHY YOU'LL BE EXPOSED TO A EXTREME RANT BY YOURS TRULY.
Why?
Why?Hot Topic turned punk into a fashion. I'm not even a very big fan of punk and i feel the hate for this place.
Not many know this but before Hot Topic, people used to MAKE the spiked braclets, chains attached to your waist( not very complicated  ), and all the other paraphernalia you see sold at hot topic.
Before Hot Topic, there were punk rockers. The guys who actually spent the time to make the stuff so that they were visually identifiable as punk rockers. Nowadays, they still exist, but not as many of them do. I go to a lot of shows, and I can't count the amount of times i've seen a real punk rocker on my hands. And just so you know, punk isn't just about the music (although its a very big part of it). It's also about the community and the looks(not neccesarily something i agree with, but ehh, wahtever).
After Hot Topic, ...Being so-called "punk" is now a fashion. You can go down and get those spiekd braclets that were originally made, for an insanely overpriced $13 dollars(or so i'm told). That's just one example. I don't even want to expand on that subcategory more.
In conclusion, Hot Topic has brought being "punk" to the mainstream. People who shop at nowhere but Hot Topic(nicknamed "Preppie Punks" around where i live) are a mockery to real punk rockers, and I for one am pissed off by this. Peopel need to stop trying to be something they're not, stop trying to drop themselves into a category, a group, stop trying to identify with something, and just let fucking go. They need to just be themselves. Damnit.
I have to add though, that this is all a conclusion i've come up with while observing atmospheres at shows and at high school. And hey, I might be wrong, it might be a terrible tradgedy, but whatever.

Music started out being a bunch of people around a campfire singing, or sailors singing on voyages. It only became about money until recentally.
You clearly don't know what you're talking about. People do play music for fun, no fuckin shit. But do you really think that people would donate their lives to the band for no money or if they didn't get famous? Why wouldn't they just stay in their garage band then? No, it's always been about money and fame. Whether fun has been mixed in their is irrelevant, because they are drawn in for the fame and money. And possibly bitches.
Metallica conformed to the tastes of the new generation. They thought that with their new style they would either spark some old listeners to start listening again, and to catch the new group of kids who didn't like their old stuff. Well, it failed, but they tried. It's always been about the money.
Music started out being a bunch of people around a campfire singing, or sailors singing on voyages. It only became about money until recentally.
People singing around campfires, and sailors singing together, aren't careers. They don't get paid for it. They don't dedicate their entire week, singing, making music, playing at concerts, or rehearsing. They do it as a passtime, which is in an entirely different section than what we are talking about.
The music MTV plays doesn't suck just because you dislike it. Most of the young crowd likes it, hence why MTV plays it. If everyone liked the old shit more, they'd play that. But they play what the majority wants to hear. Obviously. As for that "those who aren't independent and want to be cool" crap, that's just completely wrong. Just because people like the new music and follow some of the new trends, doesn't mean they aren't independent, have low self-esteem and are simply followers. True, some are, but there's always followers. People just like the music, just as you like whatever the hell you like.
Holy fucking shit you have no idea what you're talking about.
Do you even play an instrument? Have you even gotten together with a bunch of your friends and played music together?
Let me tell you: It's an incredible feeling. It's a unique high that you can get nowhere else.
You're totally full of shit. Not everybody is in it for the money.
Yes, I do play the guitar and have played with my friends together. That is for fun. Nobody here is talking about garage bands though, so that is all irrelevant shit.
We are talking about those who dedicate their lives to making music. But as I asked above, would people still do it if it were just for fun? No. That's why we go home and play with our friends. For fun. These artists are in it for money and fame. I'm sure most of them love what they do, but they wouldn't be in the business if you removed these factors.
Money makes the fuckin world go round. Not fun. But you're right, I'm full of shit because I have a better understanding of the real world.

I've played on stage before, for fun. I was in a band that made it out of the garage. NOTHING beats the thrill of playing in front of people and seeing them enjoy what you make. It's almost as good as great sex because you're doing what you love AND you're doing it for people's enjoyment.
For the record, I've played free shows, I've played pay shows. I didn't make much money for it but I loved every second of it regardless. I don't care about the money. If someone said to me right now, "Hey Freak, you wanna be a rock star? One catch, you won't make money." I wouldn't hesitate to tell them hell yeah. Playing music is the ultimate high for me. Making people happy with my music, giving them enjoyment because of something that I do...
THAT is what music is about. I couldn't care less about "bitches" (try to refrain from being obtuse in the future, kid). I couldn't care less about money or fame. As long as I get to do what I love, and get to have some awesome fun doing it. I can work side gigs at McDonalds to pay the rent.

Ummmmmmmmm... Stop branding punk as garbage. The "punk" you see on TV isnt punk. All those garbage bands you see on tv are fucking boy bands, if you listen to the lyrics, its all about love and shit. fucking panzies!
punk is about 3 things,
1 go fuck yourself
2 beer
3 music

That's a good point. If my world lit class gets into a discussion about how America is entranced with the concept of falling in love, I'll mention how much of today's music is emo.

 that should bring up some good discussion.
emo = teh suck.
theres about one exception though, The Get Up Kids. Their lyrics aren't as love orientated as others, though.

Rooney is awesome and their lyrics are pretty love-orientated
Not a big Rooney fan. Not sure why. I do like muse though. But they're not really emo.
