View Full Version : option for manual gear.

I'll make this as simple as possible. allow people to have manual gear instead of automatic. I've honestly never driven a tank before, and I hope not too (F-15 is more like it for me), but I know buggies, jeeps and others are much better if you have manual gear. providing of course you're a good driver and not just some rich city kid.
so... would you want to see a choice added? after all, a vanguard driver has little else to do anyway. you can add anti newB things like protecting the engine from blowing up ;)
anyone here who drove 4X4 veichles with and without stick shift will probably know what I'm talking about. hard terrain (in planetside it's pretty much the slopes) is much harder with automatic.

Real tanks are automatics.

I would definatly cert in marauder if there was manual gear.

Yea that'd be cool (and Heavygain: the guy in your sig looks like he has his finger up his nose).

I'd love to be chasing an enemy lightning and have it drop its transmission right in front of me

yeah, tanks are automatic. what about buggies though? and the marauder sure looks like a pickup truck to me. and god knows what pruple hovering alien tech based veichles have, especially the ones that shoot deadly pink flowers.

Most real military vehicles are automatic...
The days of auto=suckage are over :(

stick shift means control, and no automatic is smart enough to know when a patch of sand is comming up.

My pickup IRL is automatic, my in game vehicles are automatic. Last thing I want to think about when I am mine dodging is what gear I am in.

I'm pretty sure all military vehicles, from tanks to hummers, are automatic transmission. Speciality vehicles might come in manual, but I'm not sure.
Personally, I'd be satisfied if Planetside's vehicles simply had better off road capabilities. That would probably be an easier solution than adding manual (though that idea is good too).

I also wish they were a little bit faster, and since they turbonerfed mowing I dont see any reason for them not to be faster...
And being able to blow up a full health Harasser goin 120kph hitting a tree would be incentive to drive more carefully...
One thing I would really like to see though, even though it isnt real manual is a 4x4 Hi and Lo key. It wouldn't be for floating, tracked, or obviously non 4x4 vehicles...
For example, the Enforcer as is is crappy at best off road, and with a 73kph top speed, its mediocre on the road. With the Hi/Lo the Hi would be how it is now, and the Lo would have a top speed of say...60 kph, but would increase climbing and acceleration by say...2x...
Just a thought...

like I said, option for stick shift. if you have an automatic IRL then you can use auto ingame, but you won't be able to max out the car.
a few years ago we had a 98 Isuzu trooper. manual of course. damn that car kicked ass. we went on a 4 day jeep trip in jordan with 10 other jeeps. it was VERY easy to see who had automatic.
I like full control of my car. and yeah, I want to be able to go into low gear, climb a hill and then when I'm on road accelerate quickly. maybe driving will actually require skill now, you never know...

I love driving my car(which is manual) but let's not have that transfer over to planetside.
Im 16. I just got my first car recently. Stick = nothxplz.

I think that while manual would be cool, it's really NOT important to the game itself. I don't think it would do anything other than be kinda cool, maybe improve off-road stuff or climbing, but none of that is truly important to the game as it stands today.

Well i like manual driving, it help curb my naturally bad driving & speed urges...too busy concentrating changing gears.
I mean they say women are bad drivers on urban roads, but put them in a tank & point them at the enemy.....
"Driver, you just pushed that AMS off the bridge, and double parallel parked on a squad of enemy troops. dammit woman, your good."
Oh yeah, i like the way manual cars can go faster then automatic, its a good trade off....
(But suddenly i want a Automatic, just because... )

Sure, I still P.S....after i finish maxing out my baaaby......

Manual Assault Buggys would be cool. But Driving, gears and gunning in a Lightning would definatly fry my brain.

It would make it quite hard to drive a 1-person vehicle. Now that single person would have to drive, gun, and shift. It's all ready pretty hard just driving well and not running into trees as your firing at infantry.
The real advantage of a manual car is you can usually rev it higher, giving you better acceleration if you know what your doing and also, they can reach higher speeds, but only by 5 or so MPH.
It's not really needed in PS.

since i saw some "IRL" nonsense in this thread, i'd like to add:
modern tanks (the turbine-powered sort, like mr. abrams) use hydrokinetic drives. in the case of the american m1a1 and a2, that means four forward and two reverse.
most importantly, they don't shift like your aunt's buick, which is a completely mechanical drivetrain.
however, having manual on non-tracked vehicles makes sense, imo; especially the ams

first gear could be "mower" gear cause it's slow but the car doesn't stop or something.
just a thought.

bah easy for me
Also as some have said before it would be an option, though it would ive you a teeny bit of advantage, and how hard is pushing a button down after you accelerated so much to shift to a different gear( i assum it woudl be the 'E' and 'C' keys as those are perfect)

If anything it would make the Lit easier to drive, being able to set a max speed without using cruise would be useful...
Personally though, I'd still be happy with Hi and Lo 4 wheel drive settings...
