View Full Version : Critique My Brothers band...

Awhile ago I posted my brothers band website (http://www.rubyinterweb.com/) for critique, well now I am doint the same for their music.

Before I post the link, there are a couple of things to get out of the way first:

1.) This is just bass and drums, no guitar. It is quite a sight to see my brother play this stuff live, as it is very hard to play a bass as the only element in a song aside from drums and sing at the same time, which brings me to...

2.) The vocals (and the mixing in general) on some of these songs is just so-so. The reason being that this was just my brother plugging stuff into his laptop and mixing it with some cheap software, their next cd, The Smell of Executives, will be done on their new personal studio (which they are also selling time on to other local bands) and will be much better.

The vocals are much better live, so much better its crazy.

Anywho, enough of my blathering, LETS ROCK! http://www.rubyinterweb.com/Music/index.htm

EDIT: Muddy Water is my favorite one of their songs, mainly just cause it is fun to mosh to and cause my bro gets all hyped up on stage when they play it...

Also, if anybody here lives in the Houston, Texas area, PM me and I will give you a run down of their shows in the area...

thanks, I helped with the concept, but the actual coding work was done by my brothers friend.

Thanks, I never had any problem with the drumming, but whatever. ;)

Not too bad. Keep working. A full band would help. Music could use a little more depth and variety - too many 2 chord changes back and forth. Mix it up a little. Vocals aren't bad - could use some harmony vocals for added punch. Good start - hang in there.

Good stuff indeed. Being a bassist myself, I'm wondering does he strum all of it with a pick or does he use his fingers? Sounds good though, some really slammin bass lines.

I agree with the guy above, that full sound would really improve the sound. Keep at it!

My review...

"Beautiful Night"- Love that main bass riff. Although i'd have to agree that it sounds kinda empty with just two sounds. I'm all for two-man bands, but most of the time, it's just got an empty feeling to it. A good two-man band is one of my favorites, "Nice Nice", which has guitar and drums only. Check it out.
"Entirely Too Happy"- (Since this a "joke" song, i'll not go into detail about this one.) Its defiently got a happy feel to it, and it reminds me of weezer. Weezer isn't the best axample of great musicians, but you manage to capture that catchy feel to it, with only two people. :) Nice.
"Muddy Water"- I've heard quite a few local bands with the same singing style as your vocalist, and i'm not quite fond of it, but that just me. It's just pointed out a lot in this song. Although i really like the interlude at the end of the song. :)
"A Promise of a Better Life"- It's got a nice feel to it. Everything seems to fit during the start. When the distortion kicks in it seems to be more of an effort to differ part of a song. A different Rift would of been nicer.I also noticed that the drummer may have a double bass pedal, but if not, he's pretty good with his footing. :) The part where he's singing, "I don't care at all," doesn't seem to fit with the song too much, but i'm glad that he changed it. The entire song in itself has a very ballad feeling to it, which i really like. The solo is strange. It has room for a lot, but only a fraction was used is what it seemed like. :(
"Wasting Time"- This probably my favorite of all the songs. It has a part right after where it kinda hangs, but not quite long enough for my tastes, but again, that's just me. The pause was used perfectly and it brought the song together near the middle. Although after the pause it just seems to be the first part again. The ending seemed too abrupt though. :(

A few side notes...

Let it be known that i'm not a big fan of repetativness. Some people like it alot, but i'm just weird. :p
They've defeintly got their own feel, but the only thing they need to change in my opinion is the singing style.
The songs sound kind of empty. I would get a guitarist, if i were them. But even better, to keep that uniqueness, maybe another bassist? They've defeinetly got this low feeling to them that i love, because they have only bass. Remember, always try to set yourself apart from other bands. :)
Overall...

I'd have to give them a 7 or an 8.5/10. They've got a uniqueness to them, but some of the songs are repetative and have a kind of empty feeling to them.

Sorry 1024, I'm from the Diego area! But man I love that idea of the two basses, talk about a unique idea! That would definently set you guys apart from this growing trend of not even having a bass and down tuning a guitar to cover the lower sounds, like the White Stripes.

But two basses, I  it!

no its pretty good you never like mess up or anything. the best trait a drummer can have is being consistent.

Not really. Best trait would defienetly just being able to keep a beat.

Trust me.

I figured he meant 'ability to keep a beat' when he said 'consistant'. But your both right.

I like them.
