I hate Role Playing Games. All of them. Lineage 2, Final Fantasy XXLCVIIII or whatever it's at, you name it. Right off the bat, you are going to tell me that everyone to his own taste. Nobody's opinion is fact. Fine. This is my taste, I am explaining to you why my taste is different.

1: Level up!

I don't agree with the idea of leveling up. I have the Neverwinter Nights demo. I levelled up my character, and his Max HP spiked like six points. What the fuck? This is bullshit. "But they level up in Planetside!" Yes, but they don't become impossible to kill! Levelling up just creates a massive gap. Once you are level sixty, you fucking rape everything that is level one, be it monsters, NPCs, or other players (thus rendering this a shitty-ass system for multiplayer.)

2: If Tekken players complain about button mashing...

...then I don't want to know about RPGs. There is NO SKILL. All I have to do is press the X key and my character launches a spell, arrow, or lance, and hits the enemy. If he misses, it's the random inaccuracy factor. There is no aiming, nothing. What's so fun about pressing a button and watching your Half-Ogre in Bone Armor +3 swing his axe over and over to a Red Dragon? Speaking of battle...

3: BATTLE MODE!

I fucking hate Battle Mode. Even if the games have all the other features, I can sometimes play a game if it doesn't have BATTLE MODE. I was at a GameStop or some game store once. There was a PS2 with FF10 on it. I moved my character along an empty mountain trail.

All of a sudden I enter BATTLE MODE!

WHERE THE FUCK DID THAT COME FROM? THE ROAD WAS EMPTY! Wha...there are people in my group! I mean come ON, dragons don't pop out of nowhere! How about the devs and players grow testicles and LET THE ENEMIES FIND YOU! (Note: Thank God that this is not in ALL RPGs.)

4: In Soviet Russia, cliche Wizard/Fighter/Bowman picks YOU!

Let's face it. Lineage 2 is the epitome of this system, but the fact of the matter is, these games are mostly the same. Fight with magic or weapons. Lineage 2 has this down pat- those are LITERALLY the only two classes (exception is the engineer-type class, where you have to pick a whole 'nother race whose only class is that). NWN extends this so that it is pretty much the same thing, but with different kinds of magic/weaponry. (Face it, Druids and Wizards are pretty much the same shit.)

There are no classes in most FPSes. The ones that exist are team-based and are based realistically off the modern army's tactical squad.

5: It robbed me of my friend :tear:

Dark Valor was the god of FPSes. I am his real-life schoolmate and friend. This guy knows pretty much EVERYTHING about EVERY FPS created, Doom to Half-Life, especially Duke Nukem. He also kicks ass at strategy games, and is our Rise of Nations demigod.

Then he tried Lineage 2.

I have yet to find the bastard who showed him it, but he is going to suffer. He has dropped all FPS play and once literally played Lineage 2 from 4:00 PM when he got home to like 2 in the morning. ON A SCHOOL DAY.

The sickness has infected him even into his AIM Away Message:

Since EverQuest, most MMORPGs (Lineage 2 and FFXI come to mind) have basically put pretty little elf women spinning around so their underwear shows in all their ads, culminating in Lineage 2's website. The elf-other screenshot ratio is maybe 1 to 1. Ask Eine, AS YOU LEVEL UP IN FFXI AS ONE OF THE FEMALE RACES, YOUR CHARACTER LITERALLY LOSES CLOTHING! I'm not gay, I'm not sympathizing with FemiNazis here, but it's all the same! Even RPGs that don't do that suffer from Show Off Pretty Graphics in Screenshot syndrome. I want a fucking game that is as bright as World War 1. That would kick ass. A World War 1 FPS.

7: Same Old Situation (S.O.S)

RPGs (not all) have the same fucking setting. It's a quasi-medieval world, but with magic and other humanoid races.

We've seen it before! Stop trying to clone Dungeons and Dragons and MAKE SOMETHING NEW! SWG is a step in the right direction, something that's not Lord of the Rings-like for once. How about a present-day war RPG? How about a space wars RPG? For God's sake, don't you get TIRED of being an Orc against the Evil Mage Thurgior?

Morrowind is a blast to me for 1 and 1 reason only: the Archer class. It makes the game a FPS with leveling and armor-buying. Not to mention that it's a pretty open-ended game. Of course, this doesn't equate to random mass murders or anything, but the ability to go anywhere, even if you'll get murdered, is fun.

So, in short, RPGs suck. Morrowind as an Archer is kickass.

RPGs may not require quick reflex skill, but there is quite a bit of tactical skill involved in them. Also, most people enjoy RPGs for the story, the ability to customize their characters, and the extreme open ended-ness. Not all RPGs are like that, but good ones are. I dont like every type of RPG, as most people dont like every type of FPS. I hate power-levelling MMOs with no story (Lineage II), but I do like immersive RPGs that are fun and have atmosphere. Most people dont like D&D games because they are quite complicated, I was the same way until I took the time to learn it. Also Wizards and druids arent nearly the same thing. They have much different roles in the game and each have different strengths weaknesses, proficiencies and abilities.

i dont like most of the "quasi medieval" rpgs but i found Earth and Beyond to be quite entertaining....until they put the exp. level band....and war etc. etc. it got annoying after that. then they took away loot in one sector where EVERYONE could easily make money by finding a lvl75+ dude to kill stuff while they looted. The damned devs took away said loot and everyone left that and the surrounding sectors except when traveling. I practically lived in that area off the loot and stuff.

EnB was fun until mining wasnt profitable. I was the wealthiest player in my clan because I did so much prospecting. It was one of the only MMOs I ever liked (E&B, PS, Neocron). All RPGs are quite different, hell by defenition BF:V could be a role playing game, so dont throw down the hate unless you know the scope of what you are dealing with.

If you liked EnB and want to play a game like it now that it's gone try this one www.jossh.com The game is called JumpGate its older not as pretty graphics and it isn't point and click but still a great game with true PvP. you can be a fighter pilot, cargo hauler, scout, Deep Space explorer, or a miner (which is profitable) or a pirate. (which is kinda funny one guy set a speed limit through a sector he claimed and if you passed it he charged 500,000 creds or you get blown up) It's flight system is based on Newtonian physics. anyway the game is a free download but it's a monthly fee I played that game like crazy till my Squad now clan moved along. just wasn't fun without those guys. I may go back someday.

I tried EVE along with EnB I just found JumpGate better.
It's kinda sad with JumpGate, Such a great game is going down the drains, with the small dev team and the lack of advertising, I heard some of the EnB players actually moved on to JumpGate. The game has great potential but the lack of people and capital are leading the game down the drains.

Hmmm I'm not the only person herer that played EnB... I do have to agree that the war did get annoying specially since my noob Je would kep gettin killed by the lvl 6 v'rix while flying through Akeron's Gate... and they took away the high lvl jobs at praetorium mons... I'm actually sorta glad that their closing it, the game we had was no where near as big as it was supposed to be...

Now i'm playin EVE... it gets bring at times but the war in Stain keeps me active... and I think my crow should be done building in an hour...

Hmm, give Fallout 1 and 2 a try.... A post apocalyptic (teh nukes fell during the late 1950's) world meets satirical 1950's US optimism. The humor in those games is just fantastic, hell even the manual made me laugh. Best RPG's made to date, imo.

You're right tho, you don't have to like rpg's and you have the right to disagree. But just flat out saying an entire genre sucks is abit narrow minded, esp concerning RPG's seeing as its just a HUGE and extremely varied genre.

Earth and Beyond owned. The combat system ruled and the storyline sucked me in.

City of Heros has the potential to be a MMO juggernaught. I still feel like I'm playing to reach the next level like in all MMOs, but every level makes my character feel *powerful*, I feel like I'm really achieving something. Plus the character customization in terms of appearance and Origin/Archetype/Primary Power Sets/Secondary Power Sets/Individual Sub Powers is awe inspiring.

Not at all. In fact your choice of language had nothing to do with it. The problem was the substance, or rather the lackthereof. Your original post was an innane rant. You made very weak points. I mean, honestly "I lost a friend to Lineage 2"? Then guess what, Aztec? You simply found out where you ranked in his/her eyes. The problem was not an RPG, the problem was your friend was a fucking moron who had his/her values completely out of whack.

Overall there wasn't a whole lot worth replying to. Construct a well thought out post with solid points and I'll take the time to think out suitable counter arguments. Post inanne profanity and expect innane profanity back ;)
