View Full Version : The Next Generation GeForce 6800 Ultra (!)

I am speechless.
I have never seen numbers this high in games or benchmarks ever.
This is the biggest performance leap from one generation of graphics cards to the next, ever.
This thing makes a Radeon 9800xt look like it's a 3 year old mainstream card. Performance doubles, even triples at higher settings compared to a 9800xt.
But the numbers don't lie. Over 12000 in 3dMarkk03, over 60 fps in Halo at 1600x1200, over 50fps in FarCry with everything on high, AA and AF on.
Prepare to upgrade your power supplies folks. Recommended size from Nvidia: 480 watts with 4 ATX connectors, as the Ultra takes 2 dedicated ATX connectors itself.

I'll let the rest of the numbers do the talking. I can't wait to see what comes out of the ATI camp to compete with this thing.

erm... like i said on the other thread, don't waste your money on this card when it comes out, because PCI-Express will blow AGP away. Instead, wait for nVidia to release a PCI-X version of it.

Hmm i dont' know its certainly making up for the FX lines flop thats for sure.
though ther are probably one 10 people on this forum with a good enough PSU to use it, it has more transistors than a 3.4ghz P4EE! 222million of them, the non-ultar is the one i liek though $299, 12piplelines and good power reqs.

God I want this card. :(
Owned! What more is there to say? With the GeForce 6800 Ultra, you can play UT2004 with 4xFSAA and 8x anisotropic filtering at one resolution higher than its rivals - and still get better frame rates!
Haha, this made me giggle.
Rbstr
2004-04-15, 11:30 PM
but can your PSU support it?
i'm still wary they might have hit the nial on the head or not, it depends on ATI's offereings and if Nvidai decides to cheat on benches again (though the game benches shown seem s to say they are not)

I have an Antec TruePower 480W PSU. I actually just opened my case and had a look to be sure I had a couple of spare cables. I do, fucking sweet! Now I just need some money.

You missed the "I just need money now" part. I would have to not eat for a week, which may be worth it.

i'd do it!
Just mooch form your partents or something

I am a little old to be mooching from my parents :p, considering I earn more than they do. However I do have an affluent gf to mooch off of. I like your mooching suggestion and will act upon it.

eat half of what you eat each week and you could get it in 2 weeks ;)

^ he's got a good thing going there, so now you only have too mooch half of your food
the card won't be avalible for a month or so anyway

I am thinking just the non ultra version. I could afford that easily. The ultra is incredibly expensive. I am going to get in trouble for spending USD300 on a gfx card, you people are a bad influence on me.

::sighs:: ok, but dont say I didnt warn ya. PCI-X will come out, and a PCI version of the card will probably be made, and totally pwn the AGP version...
Besides. Everyone else will have PCI-X and you will have an AGP. I'm tellin ya, people will be like, "dude, get out of the STONE AGE"
:p

Lies, it is the best card ever made and always will be ffs. Besides, when PCIx comes out and actually doesn't suck (the 1st release or 2 will suck ass as always), it will be time for a large upgrade anyway.

I'm scheduling my next mobo upgrade for after PCI-X and DDR2 has been released, and all the kinks have been worked out of the system. Shortly afterwards, I'll probably invest in a PCI-X gfx card.

^^Ditto^^
I have a good system right now. Radeon 9800pro, AMD 2800+, Epox 8RDA+ (soon NF7-S), 1024Mb PC 2700 Ram, 400W P/S. Perhaps ppl should look into running a secondary Power supply to run these new cards.

::nods::
thats one of the reasons I got a 500W power supply, I heard the newer cards were going to be power-hungry...

2004-04-16, 04:15 PM
yeah its probalby a good isea, you could probably get a 200 watter someplace that can fit inside your case someware, but the card need 150 watts so most of thos auxilary ones won't be an option.
Yeah i plan on upgrading sometime next year, xmas or so. i'm just abou thappy with this one, hopefully i can get a deal on a P4 Northwood

Actually if I remember correctly, nvidia will be realeasing a pci-x version of this new card when it debuts. Which makes sense seeing as there are alread atx mobos with pci-x. However I wouldn't buy either until btx, 64-bit, ddr2, and pci-x are "mainstream", its just a waste of money at this point.
Rbstr
2004-04-18, 05:07 PM
well teh PCI-X versions only uses a bridge chip, so it realy doen't offer anything extra
Electrofreak
2004-04-19, 11:48 AM
I believe ATI will be releasing a "true" PCI-x card, sortakinda read about it on their site. I guess it doesn't use a bridge chip so supposedly it should take advantage of the PCI-x bandwidth better.

2004-04-19, 08:18 PM
So uh, how much does it cost anyway? If it's below 500, I could buy it but be poor for 3 months.
Rbstr
2004-04-19, 08:20 PM
it should be for sale (when avilible, I hate it when they launch somethign that nobodly can buy, the X800 will be avialible they day the launch) right at 499 but i expect the new shiny electronics tax will be added
Octavian
2004-04-19, 08:45 PM
Screw the electronics tax, at least I can finally kick ass in games. The new PSU I'll have to "mooch" for.
Rbstr

its not a real tax but they mark up prices on new stuff becuase its new

other cards = AIT/XGI/Matrox(though they don't make gaming cards per se)

It doesn't have to be a gaming cards. Maybe you need to something powerful to run, OMG...Word.

Exactly Robert, it's not always ATI. There's other competition out there.

The ONLY Home user Vidcard Competitor to ATI right now is Nvidia and vice versa.

Wow, "Battle of the Techies".
I've heard of Matrox, thank you very much.
BUT you don't know that. In the next 6-12 months another company could rise up and have a faster chip than the Geforce 6800 Ultra.

Got fraud?
Btw, that's Australian eBay. That price is about half retail of the non-ultra version. I know it is an initial price, but come on, a guy with no feedback selling a 6800U with an initial price of $300? Even CoD option doesn't convince me he is ridgy didge.

Very unlikely. Mostly due to the fact that ATI and nVidia have massively more income than Matrox, and can thus fund their development departments much more. Also, nVidia and ATI are competing on an almost even ground, so they are always pushing hard to get ahead of one another. This means that Matrox, in order to come out with a better chip than nVidia or ATI, would have to stumble on some amazing new technology that the other two's massively funded research and development departments somehow managed to miss.
Matrox makes decent cards for multi-monitor support and the like, but the likeliness of them becoming a competitor in the area of high-end gaming graphics cards is pretty small.

Ah, but Freak, there is still A CHANCE. It may be small, but it still counts as A CHANCE.
