How exactly do you use paypal and set up an account?

I always thought to set up a paypal accont you needed a credit card but I recently found out that you didn't or at least I think you don't. Anyway how exactly does a paypal account work? I went to the site and saw how to set up an account but was a bit freaked out to set one up since I had no clue how it worked. And by the way I'm 12, can I still set up an account?

if you said yes to all three, you should be able to get a paypal account.
