Why in hell can't the Army do it if the Marines can. They are the same kind of men; why can't they be like Marines.
Gen. John J. "Black Jack" Pershing, USA; 12 February 1918
Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering if they made a difference in the world. But, the Marines don't have that problem.
Ronald Reagan, President of the United States; 1985 Marines I see as two breeds, Rottweilers or Dobermans, because Marines come in two varieties, big and mean, or skinny and mean. They're aggressive on the attack and tenacious on defense. They've got really short hair and they always go for the throat.
RAdm. "Jay" R. Stark, USN; 10 November 1995 They told (us) to open up the Embassy, or "we'll blow you away." And then they looked up and saw the Marines on the roof with these really big guns, and they said in Somali, "Igaralli ahow," which means "Excuse me, I didn't mean it, my mistake".
Karen Aquilar, in the U.S. Embassy; Mogadishu, Somalia, 1991 Gone to Florida to fight the Indians. Will be back when the war is over.
Colonel Commandant Archibald Henderson, USMC
in a note pinned to his office door, 1836 I have only two men out of my company and 20 out of some other company. We need support, but it is almost suicide to try to get it here as we are swept by machine gun fire and a constant barrage is on us. I have no one on my left and only a few on my right. I will hold.
1stLt. Clifton B. Cates, USMC
in Belleau Wood, 19 July 1918 My only answer as to why the Marines get the toughest jobs is because the average Leatherneck is a much better fighter. He has far more guts, courage, and better officers... These boys out here have a pride in the Marine Corps and will fight to the end no matter what the cost.
2nd Lt. Richard C. Kennard, Peleliu, World War II
I can't say enough about the two Marine divisions. If I use words like 'brilliant,' it would really be an under description of the absolutely superb job that they did in breaching the so-called 'impenetrable barrier.' It was a classic- absolutely classic- military breaching of a very very tough minefield, barbed wire, fire trenches-type barrier.
Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf, U. S. Army
Commander, Operation Desert Storm, February 1991
I am convinced that there is no smarter, handier, or more adaptable body of troops in the world.
Prime Minister of Britain, Sir Winston Churchhill
Do not attack the First Marine Division. Leave the yellowlegs alone. Strike the American Army.
Orders given to Communist troops in the Korean War;
shortly afterward, the Marines were ordered
to not wear their khaki leggings.
Lying offshore, ready to act, the presence of ships and Marines sometimes means much more than just having air power or ship's fire, when it comes to deterring a crisis. And the ships and Marines may not have to do anything but lie offshore. It is hard to lie offshore with a C-141 or C-130 full of airborne troops.
Gen. Colin Powell, U. S. Army
Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff

I'm sure they are.
After all I can say the same about our own "special forces"
but obviously you would disagree because your bias. The same as me.
But technically USMC isn't is it?
I thought Delta force, Green Berets and Navy Seals was special forces?
USMC are the equivilant of "Royal Marines" right?
And they are picked from the toughest and best of the army, and they like to be transported by ships which is why they are called "Marines" right?
so what makes "special forces"?
picked from the super Toughest and bestest soldiers from Marines and all armed forces?

That has such a strange American Logic to it, I can believe that.
Like that film U-47 or somthing, when a US submarine crewed with a rock band discovered that secret german code-maker and saved the world.

Winston fucking pwns. How many other world leaders do you know who would say this:
Lady Somethingorother [some poncy, rich, 'Lady' to a Lord]: You, Sir, are completely Drunk!
Churchill: Well you, madam, are ugly! At least in the morning i will be sober!
And no, Onizuka-GTO, the Royal marines and USMC's are really quite different. The BRM are more like a kind of special force of the Navy, though not as secretive as the Special Boat Service. However, the USMC's are more like, as someone once put it, 'an elite amphibious army'. And you can only become a marine if you join the Navy, i believe, not the army, so they are not 'the best of the army', as far as i'm aware.
Please, correct me if i'm wrong.
EDIT: And oni again, that was U-571. And in real life, it was a British Sub. And no rock bands, though that would have meant it would have jsut kicked more ass.

some info on the U.S. military...
The U.S. military has 4 separate and equal branches: air force, army, navy, and marines. However, there are only 3 bureaucratic military departments in the federal government: dept of the air force, dept of the army, and department of the navy. The navy and marines both fall under the same department. The navy transports marines, and controls the water. The marines are used to punch their way into an area if necessary and establish a safe area. The air force transports the army and then bases are set up. The air force dominates the air and bombs strategic targets, and the army is used to take ground and occupy.

Better than what? The Marines don't have anything to compare it to. The Marine Corps job is to march out and kill the enemy. The Army occupies and therefor needs the surgical capabilities of teams like delta, or to train the locals like the Green Berets.

not better, just bigger. the US mentality is "if brute force doesn't work you're not using enough brute force". you can see that wuite clearly with how you guys tried to kill saddam with a god damn tommahawk and when that didn't work you used not 1, not 2, not even 3, but 4 bunker buster bombs! US army is based on 2 things, technology and size.
we can't afford expensive missiles that can stop at a red light, hover, signal left, turn, signal right, park, walk to the door of the target, ring the doorbell and blow up when he answers. we can't look at the intel, say ok, and send in 10 times the military power. we have to make each soldier count and that's we own.

Since its all about military things:
AMERICA is to award the Congressional Medal of Honour, the equivalent of the Victoria Cross, to a British Special Boat Service commando who led the rescue of a CIA officer from an Afghan prison revolt.
It will be the first time the medal has been awarded to a living foreigner. The Queen will have to give permission for the SBS soldier to wear it.
The SBS senior NCO led a patrol of half-a-dozen SBS commandos who rescued a member of the CIA's special activities section from the fort at Qala-i-Jangi near Mazar-i-Sharif, last November. The fort was holding 500 al-Qa'eda and Taliban prisoners, many of whom had not been searched and were still armed.
An exchange of fire developed into a full-scale revolt and two CIA officers who had been interrogating the prisoners were caught in the battle. One, Johnny "Mike" Spann, was killed by the prisoners. The other, who has been named only as Dave, was trapped inside.
The SBS patrol was about to leave the area when the revolt broke out but returned to rescue Dave. The uprising went on for three days and the SBS commandos remained throughout, bringing down aerial fire to quell the revolt.
The battle was one of the most contentious episodes in the war last year with human rights groups raising concerns over air strikes against prisoners, some of them unarmed. The SBS is often seen as a poor relation of the SAS but has been present at all leading special forces operations of recent years.
The eagerness of the Americans to recognise the courage of the NCO contrasts with suspicion within the regiment that two SAS soldiers being considered for VCs for an attack on the al-Qa'eda cave complex will not get them.
One led the main attack on the heavily defended al-Qa'eda mountain cave complex near Kandahar while the other directed aerial fire at extreme risk to his life
Sorry I had to post that.

I never heard about that. the last people I thought got the Medal of Honor was SFC Shughart and Gordon from Mog. Somalia in 1993.

we can't afford expensive missiles that can stop at a red light, hover, signal left, turn, signal right, park, walk to the door of the target, ring the doorbell and blow up when he answers. we can't look at the intel, say ok, and send in 10 times the military power. we have to make each soldier count and that's we own.
oh come on, we know how you guys like to assassinate. a few tow missiles from a apache isnt very subtle.

I shouldn't keep talking due to my past as losing my temper but I think I can handle it. I'm joining the NAVY but my friends say I should be a Marine, a sniper. One perticular friend said he had a "dream" of me on a mountain laying behind my Rifle on a bi-pod with a mision to assassinate some guy. Then I'm sitting there looking through his family photo album laughing at his family, while prepping for my shot. I would love that job.
Maybe I am spamming, I don't know. But teddy you should really read up on your history and news before saying shit like that.
Edit: my army is better than yours! :P~

Ok, just because im a stubborn bitch, I just want to know if anyone can tell me if this statment have even a grain of truth.
US special forces average age is 24.
UK special forces average age is 35.
To be in the UK special forces, you must first have already served in the armed forces for 3 years. the upper age limit for joining is 27 is most cases. so they must have joined before they are 27, and as well as having 3 years experiance beforehand means most have spent about...7 years in the forces, and aswell as having 3 years experiance, they could already be a combat veteran, not to mention being a lot more mature.
To be in the US special forces you can apply straight from civilian life, meaning they have no previous experiance, and when they go to war, it will be for the first time. (i know some soldiers transfer, but a lot of it's recruits are fresh from civvy street.) When the SAS goes to war, all of it's soldiers will have been on operations beforehand and some will be veterans, if they have been in combat with their previous unit.
another thing: How can you compare the US SF training to the UK's when already world class soldiers fail the UK selection? Civvies pass the US SF selection!
Though to be honest, this debate is moot, as it pretty much impossible to verify. But it fun to talk about anyway.... :p

Yeah that's complete bullshit. To clarify, you can apply for Ranger school and Seals school (BUDS), when you enter, but it's pretty much just expressing desire and they tag your file. You have to complete all the requisite infantry training and then go off to testing to see if you're accepted to either. If you get through the multiple month testing phase, then you're still not a Ranger or SEAL, you still have to go through that training, which is a few more years. On top of that, you must be of certain rank (I believe) to be a seal. Rangers are not as elite as seals at all and shouldn't be compared. I believe our average age was also about 35. For the actual "Special forces" like delta or green berets, members are selected from active duty forces for exceptional performance under combat conditions. So while there's a grain of truth in the above statement, it's deliberately distorted.

The Air Force's bmt is 6 weeks plus something called Zero week, where you in-process and get your gear. Realistically this makes it 7 weeks, because the Instructors are in your face and training you from day 1. Goarmy.com says Army BMT is 9 weeks, but I suspect one of those might be like Air Force zero week. Trying to make it sound more hard-core by counting zero week for one service and not for the other is lame, imo.

I'm told it's exactly like that, except without all of the swearing and physical contact now. I think officially there's suppossed to be one arm's length between the recruits and the DI's at all times.
ghost
My father went through Marine Enlisted boot in the late 70s, according to him, that is the most accurate portrayal of boot there is. As for no physical contact with recruits, I know for a fact that it happens on a very regular basis. It's not condoned per say, but it happens. I'm sure my kid brother will have something to say to anyone who says otherwise.

oh really? are you in the US armed forces? mind telling me who you played against? cause I heard most US soldiers can't even walk silently.
btw, guess who trained your marines before the Iraqi war?
I'd love to see some proof of this, as I've never seen nor heard of any Marines being trained by the IDF. None of the Marines who have been to or are in the Gulf (For either the first or the current war) had any training with Israel.
Don't get me wrong, I have nothing but the utmost respect for the Israeli Defense Force, but our Marines don't need training from the IDF to be effective in what they do.

army rules! they have delta force, rangers, green beret, ect.
marines suck! they have nothing
Ignorance is bliss I suppose.
These Marine units are irregular units that are quite similar to those named above.
Force Recon
Scout/Sniper Teams
Detachment 1 (Marine Raiders)
F.A.S.T. (Fleet Anti-Terrorist Security Team)
This is on top of the fact that Marines are regarded as the elite of the regular armed forces (We're talking regular units, not the so-called special units)
The biggest advantage Marines have is the fact that every Marine is trained as a rifleman first. Every Marine from the Commandant to the lowliest private is trained to be a fire his or her rifle true and take ground an inch at a time if necessary. It doesn't matter what your MOS is. I'll be a pilot for the Corps soon, but a rifleman first, no Marine ever forgets this. In fact, every possible job you could have as a Marine is in support of those Marines that are trained solely as 03xx's (Infantry) and if there ever comes a time during war when your job isn't needed, you'll be handed your rifle and sent up front.
It's reasons like these that make me relish the fact that I'll be a Marine. I'd rather be leading a platoon of Marines through the nastiest ground imaginable than join the Army and do something I'd love like flying.

Doin the PLC program. I'm already Pro-Rec'd for being an SNA, so it's just a matter of graduating next spring, then off to OCS, TBS after that, then to lovely Pensacola.
if anyone doesnt know that inter-service jibes are all friendly banter, pls go die. there is respect for all MEMBERS of the armed forces, it's the service in general that is getting made fun of.
marine recon is probably the easiest to get into, paperwork wise. if you join as infantry and have qualifying ASVAB scores, you can pretty much say "hey, i wanna go recon". i believe snipers is the same way, but you must have qualifying rifle scores too.
in the SEALs, you can spend years writing letters to people who matter and not even get an eye blinked at you. no clue about army special forces.
BTW, Marine Recon and SEALs rate pretty equal in my eyes. they go through different psychological training, but they go to the exact same training schools for parachuting, building entry, all that shit. i've heard stories of both SEALs going to train and it was a Recon guy teaching them and Recon going to train and it was a SEAL.
and last but not least, USMC pwns joo.
