anyone see this? about Planetside? for the planetside anniversary, planetside members will be able to reactivate their account for the week of May 17, and play in an effort for SOE to stage the biggest battle ever. Theres also mention of a small tournament style gameplay for PlanetSide coming this fall. They said there will be smaller maps, and mroe "fast-paced" gameplay, with a reference to Counter Strike. no one say 0FN or I will cut you.

no they just meant like fast paced combat LIKE counter strike. you can change a group of people on an opposite empire to a "duel" basically, and you fight on a smaller map. they said it should be in game (or test server) by late summer.

I'm wondering wether or not the smaller battles are going to have an effect on the larger game, globally.
Regardless, I could care less unless these changes bring more players to PS.

Spork Comments:
The article is real, though I have not seen my copy yet so I can't verify the text.
So, a couple of things to talk about:
1) Yes, a good portion of this is, in fact, being discussed. The reason I haven't told the community anything is because this is the nature of press relations: I would like more players. To do that, I need media coverage. The media is not interested in information that has already gone public, so we must give them an exclusive. You guys know that when all of the design and development details are hammered out, you will be the first to see the specifics. It has always been like that, and that is very important to me.
2) We didn't write the article, so these are not necessarily our words. When we explain plans to a journalist, we have to give comparisons. Think of any game preview you have ever read. They will call out past games as an example of the general style, such as Virtua Fighter 4 meets Choplifter! So, what you should be taking out of that is not that we plan to change PlanetSide's gameplay to mimic another game. Rather, we have ideas to take the best elements from certain styles of game and use them to make our game even better.
3) We get sued if we release false subscription numbers to the press. We dislike being sued.

all i'm going to say is i dislike ANY concept that pulls players from the actual global battlefield and sticks them in a little battle "room." Keep the PlanetSide fighting on the god damned planet. Don't have people fucking around in little "battle rooms, hooraynoobroxorssoxorswoottehwinnar." I just think that's a bad idea. There's a zillion other things that the Devs could do to introduce more players. A zillion.

I agree that removing small groups of players from the main battles is a bit of a crap idea.
We want more people in the main battles not less.
Why dilute the game. There are plenty of small squad games available already. PS is unique in its potential for the huge battles.
I just wish that the servers could handle more people and that the pop locks were raised so more spectacular battles could happen.
I REALLY WANT: true day and night cycles

Hehe, haven't we been promised this before? Urban style combat anyone?
I wonder if the tournament style gameplay is really sanctuary upgrades?
Any game that is online and FPS will be compared to Counter-Strike so don't worry, unless the bolt driver gets renamed to the Artic Warfare Magnum then we have nothing to fear :D

Small battle fields, nah thats a no go.
I mean it be kool, but if they let you to every weapon there is or keep you with your battle arrangements but you still can gain br, the war has already won.

Right, mainly because most of that is early concept stuff. You guys know about most of the "already in development" items. The CGW article covers forward looking plans, but not the current items being implemented (since that has already been discussed publicly).

Free stuff for core combat owners or to everyone?? Not to be greedy but i paid for it and have been to caverns 3 times since i oppend the box. I have used the laze pointer more than the other CC guns. I wonder if its going to be given to all people or just the CC owners.

sounds good. quite frankly I support almost anything you guys add to the game, as long as it makes it better and doesnt reallly remove any other key elements.
day/night cycles would be nice, if theres a way to make infiltrators remain the same visiblity (which seems to be the only problem with this idea) maybe they can kind of light up a little, like a faint glow, when outside and moving. another possible problem is that the TR have darker colors, which may give them an edge in night battles. but Im sure thats fixable too.

Anything that takes players away from the global war *without* affecting it is a bad idea, imo.

I read the article as well and I love everything that is said in it with the exception of the smaller map, fastpaced action/ CS style gameplay... Thats boo material and I would hope it doesn't go through for this game is much more enjoyable in large scale battles as planed during that week.

I think smaller maps with faster paced gameplay could be the Orbital Platforms. They can't be really huge of course, and somehow I'm sure they will accomodate it so that it does affect your empire if you win(Perhaps the winning empire will have their CR abilities reset, and the wait time on your empire's OS countdown timer chopped in half).
I'm not sure if I like the new stats idea, just another stat that killwhores will somehow find how to skew to get themselves on the leaderboard...
...not that I know anything about trying to be a killwhore.
That's basically

It would fuxxing suck if half of the PS players decided to just duel rather than play the actual game.

Found this here: http://psforums.station.sony.com/ps/board/message?board.id=psdiscussion&message.id=60153#M60153
About the unfortunate turn of phrase implying that PlanetSide would somehow start playing like CounterStrike...well...that's just not right. PlanetSide is PlanetSide. Big battles, global domination, all that stuff. The *tournament* mode will most likely feel more like CounterStrike...but if we *must* compare it to other games, it will probably feel a lot more like "Tribes 2" in a tournament mode than CounterStrike.
The Tournament mode (it probably won't even be *called* Tournament mode since it's more like a Challenge mode) is designed to allow Outfits (or smaller groups) to do something they can't do any other way...challenge another group to a straight-up battle with no outside influences. In otherwords, it's a bragging rights sort of feature. Of course, we have lots of ideas on how to grow that aspect of the game...but this is NOT a replacement for the PlanetSide regular play, so there will be strict limitations on how often you can "challenge" other groups. In *other* other words, you'll be playing PlanetSide most of the time, and possibly doing a weekly challenge or two with your Outfits.
Challenge mode is likely to have multiple game types in it and should be pretty attractive. Further details on it will have to wait...but keep in mind that this is *not* a replacement for the regular playstyle of PlanetSide.

you infect people too easily. have you seen how long it takes for a new ranger to fit in with the team? like 2 seasons. for BORG its just RESISTANCE IS FUTILE YOU ARE NOW BORG. and then they become a Borg. god dammit.
