View Full Version : What is your major and dream job?

I'm just curious as to what majors some of the people on this forum are pursuing, and what they plan on being (or at least hope to be) in the future. I realize that some of you may have already graduated from college, if so, please post what your major was, and what job you are in right now (if you don't mind that is).

I'm really interested in your responses. To kick things off, I'll start.

I'm a Computer Science major at a community college. I'm finishing up my 4th semester, and I'm looking for a job in the computer field at this point. Job market for technology jobs is tough right now, but anything is better than my current job (stocking lumber at a warehouse, blech). Some day I hope to be a game developer/programmer, and get paid lots of money to create video games! :)

Well I'm assuming that a major is something like a University degree here in Britain in which case I'm also doing Computer Science.

My dream job... no idea, but community relations manager is up there... /me stalks Sporkfire :D

Being a pilot is also up there alongside being a Royal Marine but they're all probably unlikely :(

My father is a civil engineer btw. Seems like an all right job.

Anyway my dream job would be to drive an F1 or NASCAR race car, but that's highly unlikely.

I'd like to be a sports commentator, journalist or something that allows you the option of traveling. I don't want to and will not be cooped up in a cubicle all friggin day.

IST (Information Science Technologies)

Basically "Computers and stuff"

Its not a comp sci degree, more of half hands on networking/system design/stuff and other half project management and implementation.

My dream job would be systems analyst or leader or various projects, and eventually possible own my own business in said field.

Hey Kids! Why don't you become a Process/Project Engineer like uncle SDM. Non-stop excitement! Just today I had a half hour confrence call with some ass-hat at GM (Oklahoma Truck Assembly). He's all pissed at me 'cause the rear hatch on all his GMC Envoys make a clicking noise when you open them. I'm all like WTF dude!? and he's all BLAH BLAH BLAH ALL YOUR FAULT BLAH BLAH! and I'm like DUDE! anyways, turns out that a woman on the assembly line is whacking my plastic hinge panel with a fucking mallet to put them on. I suggested removing the "hammer" from the assembly process.

 @ SDM. Nice. I've been there many a time myself...

See at my job, I have to go in and stock a shit load of moulding (you know, like stuff that goes around doors and windows, hardly a glamorous job). Anyhow, no matter HOW many times I yell at them, they ALWAYS pick up the product with a forklift, EVERY frigging week. Then they complain about damaged product. I mean, sure its lumber, but its very fragile stuff. Some lazy ass fuck picks it up with a forklift instead of pushing it by hand, destroys a thousand dollars worth of pristine product, and it somehow becomes MY fault. I get chastized by managers who say "I've noticed a lot of damaged product recently, and I doubt its OUR employees thats doing it... I need you to be more careful." Fucking retards. Anyhow... yeah, I know how frustrating it can be.

I definately hate my job, all I want is to work with computers. Hell, I would look FORWARD to going to work every day if I did. Its just so hard to get a tech job its ridiculous. :(

Interesting so far, I'm seeing a couple of fellow tech majors like myself (no wonder its so hard for me to get a good job, its the fault of you bastards flooding the market :p ) anyhow, keep posting guys, I am very interested in your careers/career paths.

I hope to get a degree in Computer Science/Engineering. I'm not so sure this will be a good idea however, due to points already made by electro(hard to get a job). But I think if I really work at it I'll do fine.

I'm an Aeronautical Science major, Aviation Studies Area of Concentration, with a minor in Information Technology. Graduating next Spring and should be picked up for my dream job immediately thereafter as I'll be shipping for Marine OCS in June, then a six month stint at The Basic School in Quantico, VA, and then to Pensacola for flight training for the Marine Corps.

i'm gonna give everyone all good advice when it comes to this....YOU HAVE GOT TO WANT IT AND KNOW YOU WANT IT. Computer science can be a bitch A LOT if you have a shitty teacher...and maybe even a good teacher. you may want it because you love computers but if you don't understand the elementary stuff about it in your first classes, then do not continue with it..computer science isn't an easy major to be in.

dream job is to own my own computer company, run my own paintball field, and open up a barbershop for the soul purpose of free mullet removals....

Does being in Graduate school count? hehe well anyways believe it or not my dream job would be a Blacksmith making authentic swords. If I was independantly wealthy and didnt need to work I would try to master Swordsmithing and Beer Brewing. Not to really make money although you can make a shitload at both if you are good, but rather just for the pure fun of it all

I just finished up my 2nd year as an IST (information science and technology) major at Penn State. It's super easy since I already know most of the technical stuff, and I'm already a good project manager. That comes from being the smart kid in highschool who was always made group leader on class projects.

Anyway, my dream job is currently up for grabs. Too bad I'm not qualified for it yet (technically, I'd only need to learn 1 new piece of software and have a couple years experience). That job is the IS/Network administrator for Blizzard Entertainments main office in Irvine California. Not only would I have it easy with a fairly small office full of at least semi computer literate people. But I'd also get in on all the internal game testing. :D

I could see myself designing games too, but that's a whole lot less likely to happen than network admin for Blizzard.

wow. some amazin stuff here guys. Like I said, a lot of you in tech fields. Perhaps it has something to do with the whole "forum whores thing tho :p

I'm starting to think that it makes sense for people who regularly attend online forums to be interested in technology fields... pretty interesting. Right now I'm being torn between computer hardware and computer software. I'm not sure what direction I want to go in. Like I said, being a Dev would be awesome, but I might be just as happy building/managing/repairing computers. I guess I'll just see where the market takes me...
