View Full Version : An event i've learned from, that if you learned could save a life
Today when i came back to the regular spot where I hang out with my friends, the stage, my best friend, Peter, was holding my girlfriend, Marilyn(who happens to be one of his best friends, too) in his arms, as she seemed weak and crying. It turned out that she was having as asthma attack.
She didn't have her inhaler with her, and told us there was nothing we could do. Peter and i had no idea if it was a serious thing or not, and we couldn't ask here about it as she obviously could not hold a breath long enough to really talk.
So Peter and I laid her on the floor and sat there with her, while everyone else in our group of friends just kind of stayed around the area, but not with us. We tried to comfort her and make sure she was as combfortable as possible. We sat there for what seemed like forever, i'm not really sure how long, i wasn't paying attention to the time. Two of our other friends finally camed up and asked if there was anything they could do. They helped out a bit and got her some tissue.
It's one of the worst feelings in the world when one of your friends is suffering and you can do nothing about it. Peter and I were utterly helpless.
Later on i got in contact with my mom, an art teacher at the high school. She got security to come pick Marilyn up. They came put her on one of the golf carts they used to get around campus and sped away to the office, leaving peter and I there.
I talked to my mom a little bit before her, the security, and Marilyn left, and found out that asthma attacks can be fatal.
And i just got off the phone with Marilyn, and she seems to be ok. She got some medication that made here sleep for a bit, but now shes awake and just a bit dizzy. I've already called Peter to let him know whats going on.
Anyways, i just thought that i would share that bit of information with you all, just in case you ever fall into the same type of situation. Now you know that you should do something about it, that i hope will help reduce the risk of something you would later regret.

Been in a situation like that, though it wasn't an asthma attack. It sucks.
When in doubt call 911. Seriously.

If that ever happens again, tell her to grab her elbows over her head, maximizes air flow to the lungs. Drink tea or coffee black if possible, as caffeine increases blood flow, so while her lungs will still get less oxygen to her blood stream, she'll move more blood, maximizing the oxygen she does have.

I have asthma as well, and I know the hardships of those awful attacks. I had a pretty bad one in Lacrosse practice last week. We ran about 4 miles, on the final stretch around the field I collapsed and I began to black out. Luckily I was able to get my puffer before I completely passed out. later that week I went to my doctor to see what was up with that, it was the most severe attack Ive had in years, especcially since it was the first time I almost passed out from it. He basically told me that if I passed out I wouldve died, because when youre unconcious its extremely difficult to breath, and its only worse if youre having difficulty breathing in the first place. made me appreciate being alive.
I know that feeling of helplessness. I was with my mother when she died. Only there really wasnt anything I could have done.

I can't even imagine how terrifying that was. I'm glad she's alright.
We just found out my brother has asthma. It's scary just knowing that he's vulnerable like that.
Make sure he has his inhaler 24/7.

I'm trying to get him to keep an extra one everywhere, like I keep my chapstik - in mom's car, in his locker, in his guitar case... I worry.
Worrying will pay off in hindsight.

How does asthma occur? is it genetics?
Glad to hear she's okay. When she's fully recovered, smack her in the head for not having her inhaler, and scaring the piss out of you.

will do SDM, will do.

As with all my posts, it's implied, and doesn't need stating.

Im really happy shes alright.
Call 911. Simple as that. If the person recovers before the EMT's get there, dont be embarassed they can still check them out.
Get trained in CPR. If she would of fainted, or stopped breathing and in worse case if her pulse stopped and you needed to do compressions you would at least be able to try and help until the EMT's would get there with the proper equipment.
Im CPR certified and take a refresh course every year, its really a skill i think everyone should know.
Once again, im glad to hear shes ok.

no, not really. It just seems kind of random. most people are born with it and it kind of shows up later on in life. one of those random conditions people get I guess.

Glad to hear she's okay.
A certain degree of precaution is always good when dealing with health. We've got one of those hit-'em-in-the-leg-if-they-pass-out or their throat closes, or something, thingies. Maybe more than one. How do those things work, and what are they for?
