It's a Space RPG.
There are hundreds of ships/variants to choose from, hundreds of weapons, dozens of solar systems filled with planets, 5 governments, 6 major mission strings, three minor strings, countless stand-alone missions, and more space combat than you can shake a stick at.
You can board enemy ships, steal their cargo, steal their energy, steal their money, or just steal the ship and drive around in it.
You can have up to six friendly escorts to give commands to.
You can have fighter bays, railguns, missiles, blaster turrets, shields, cloaking devices, afterburners, nuclear engines, illegal weapons, and more.
You can take over solar systems, making them pay you tribute every day.
You can install player-built expansions/mods/conversions easily. The game is BUILT to be modded, and there are several out there that completely change the entire game.
Very good game, probably ended up making me stop playing PlanetSide.

Does it have to be online?
And what's ground control or whatever I was thinking of? How's it work, it looks nice.

Well JumpGate, Freespace:The Great War, Freespace 2, Tachyon:the Fringe (Major sleeper hit doubt you can even find it anymore) Starlancer and thats about all I got.

Ground Control is an ace RTS which doesn't have any resource management. You just fill your dropship(s) from the available units and that's it. It's all very tactical (like if you're above the enemy you're more accurate and the enemy becomes suppressed, and terrain and shadows can be used to mask approaches etc). http://www.groundcontrol1.com/ (GC2 is due out soon as well).
If you want a Space RTS there's none other than Homeworld, Homeworld: Cataclysm or Homeworld 2 (http://homeworld2.sierra.com/) :)
And yes, Mechwarrior 4 is a beauty of a game :D

Aye that game took true skill to be a good pilot in. graphics are a little lax but the physics alone make the game have one hell of a learning curve for PvP.

Freespace 2 was good, but I just had the demo. Good luck finding it for sale at all.
I've got the Homeworld 2 demo, that game is awesome.

Too bad they aren't planning in putting Titans in the games.
Apparently because of the RTS and close 3D scales of the models, if they were to put a Titan inthe game to the same scale all we would see is a looming shadow and pair of Titan legs each the size of a skyscraper.
