View Full Version : Coach gives kid "Crybaby award"

PLEASANTVILLE, N.J. -- A basketball coach who gave a 13-year-old player a "Crybaby Award" will be banned from coaching, sent to sensitivity training and ordered to make a public apology.
Schools superintendent Edwin Coyle revealed the punishments Wednesday. Whether the coach loses his job remains to be seen.
James Guillen, 24, a third-year special education teacher at the Pleasantville Middle School, had a trophy made up showing an infant atop a pedestal, with a plaque bearing the inscription of player Terrence Philo Jr. and the words "Crybaby Award.''
Terrence was spelled "Terrance."
After summoning the boy to attend the April 24 season-ending banquet, Guillen gave him the trophy, humiliating him in front of about 25 teammates and parents.
On Tuesday, the nine-member Pleasantville Board of Education voted to fire Guillen, rejecting Coyle's recommendation for lighter sanctions.
But state law mandates that hiring and firing recommendations come from the superintendent, not board members.
As a result, the vote to dismiss Guillen wasn't valid, according to Frank Belluscio, a spokesman for the New Jersey School Boards Association.
"It's not binding. It's not proper procedure," Belluscio said.
Coyle, who said dismissal would be too severe a punishment, said he would ban Guillen from ever coaching in Pleasantville schools and order the sensitivity training and public apology.
In addition, Guillen will be ordered to hold the banquet again and give Philo the trophy other players received. A veteran teacher also will be assigned to mentor Guillen.
Coyle said he would ask the board a second time to authorize a five-day suspension without pay and the forfeiture of a $3,000 pay raise due to Guillen.
The boy's father, Terrence Philo, said he would leave the penalty to school officials.
"I just want what's right. I want my son to have a trophy and certificate like everyone else got. No less, no more," he said.
Guillen, who has yet to speak publicly about the incident, remains on the job as a special education teacher at the school.

The story doesn't give any information about the kids attitude at practices or games. Chances are he constantly complained about having to run and whined all the way and the coach got fed up with it. I don't think anyone would be compelled to be that much of an asshole and go out of their way that much unless they believed the kid truly deserved.
I bet the kid was a whiny sack of shit, I'm glad he got that trophy.

Granted, I only know this guy from what I've read in this one article, but he sounds like a scum bag. There are better ways of dealing with a "cry baby" than public humiliation. He's a douche, and has no business teaching impressionable young people. There is enough public humiliation going on in schools without the help of the faculty.

I'm sure the kid probably did plenty of stuff to deserve being branded a crybaby. And of course the media wouldn't report any of that, because that would make him seem like less of a victim and wouldn't cause so much contraversy. Either way, there are better ways of dealing with kids like that. And the guy is a stupid douchehat for pulling a stunt like that in front of the parents and administrative officials.

There are many schools that have a special-ed sports program. No one said they have handicapped kids on their "competitive" teams. You'd have to be a fucking moron to allow a mentally retarded or otherwise challenged kid on a football team or other contact sport- not because you'd lose, but because of the safety and liability issues. Most schools won't even let an autistic kid on a team. Instead, schools try to come up with teams designed for and centered around handicapped kids. Ever hear of the Special Olympics?

truth be told, im special education, but thats because im in the homebound because of migraines, and you can also be special ed if your really smart and taking higher courses than your peers.
but, my life wasnt so good in 5th - 9th grade, most people thought i was stupid, i never tried to convince them otherwise though, and they always thought i was even when i knew all the answers the teacher was asking, was picked on, never fought back, if i did idve either killed the fucks or hurt em bad and kicked out of the school and worrying about the shit that happened then is stupid now, to me at least.

I was diagnosed as having ADD as a kid. I had to take those fucking pills every day. And they didn't work.
I read a medical survey somewhere that said most doctors diagnose normal well-adjusted kids with ADD because they want money and want to satisfy parents who ask "Why is my son/daughter on a hell-bound train?". I believe, though I am not certain, they said at least 80% of the cases were mis-diagnosed or done so because ADD is difficult to diagnose, let alone prove that it exists. It's more a state of mind than anything.
So if you've got ADD, I say you take a stand and force the whole bottle of those foul fucking pills down that cocksucker's throat and say "Eat this, you ass!" See what happens- most likely nothing.

Eh... three psyche doctors analyzed me and all reached the same conclusion... the ritilan helps a little... but i still get in trouble at school and stuff for not paying attention. its part of the reason my family is so screwed up... My dad sees me as "strange" because of it, my mom hates him for that and dislikes me because i'm "freaking annoying", and well to my sister... "HAHAHAH! Your a freaky psycho..." Whats worse is that this was accompanied by a case of bi-polar disorder as well... so i'm hyper and known to lash out on random occasions and I have gone missing twice...

I used to get bullied in school. Then I learned to totally and completely ignore everything the bullies did. My guess is that he whined about the practices and that he got the spintery bat, and that the pitcher threw too hard, and that he wants to use the softball, ETC.
Seriously. If you go to a store and get a custom trophy with a baby on a pedastal that says cry baby award. THEN YOU MUST WHINE A FUCKING LOT.
He is a Special-ed coach, im sure he isnt a big prick, he teaches special-ed. But holy shit I bet that kid whined.

He teaches special ed. Assholes are generally not the sort of people that one might desire in a teaching position, especially one that deals with mentally-deficient people. And if he coached a special-ed team he should be kicked in the balls a few dozen times... we'll see who the fucking crybaby is. Coward pussy.

i've had a series of shitty coaches throughout the history of my sports career. High school football being the worst set of coaches of all. I'll say this: if i were the kid getting the trophy, wouldn't have bothered saying or doing anythying to the coach. I'd just start sleeping with his wife. :D
Aside from that. Kam, you need to kick back and have a few beers, man.. you're waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too up-tight. :nod:
