View Full Version : Targeting system

If you've ever played BF42, you know the targeting system. when you're running, your target widens to a larger range making it harder to shoot and get a direct hit. If you stop, the targeting lessens so that it makes it easier. will it be like that?

Zatrais
2003-02-03, 01:12 PM
Yup.

It also expands when you get shot

If you are completly still and you crouch down you will be the most accurate. Probably getting shot at while running and holding the trigger down, now that is probably least accurate.

the Firemonkey is a dump truck which has been converted to combat use by adding huge-ass flamethrowers to it.

Yeah thats cause T2 is more aerially based, hence the jet pack. Also when you get l33t skillz you can fight almost exclusively in the air with chaingun and spinfuser, yeah nuttin like MA'in your enemies to get the blood up.

That's how the game is played dumbass.

The tribes series is built around the jetpack.

You ask a lot of hard core players why they won't play other FPS games (including PS) and they're answer is this: "If there's no jet pack, I'm not playing."

It brings a full 3rd dimension to fighting. Get up in the air, move dodge, shoot. If you can't do that, you've got no reason for playing the game.

Moloch, man no offence intended at all with this, I just cant stand dogs of war.... lol, come to think of it, I have never seen a fan of that game in my life.... lol

argh Dogs of War????

To its credit though, it did have 1 of the best intros i have ever seen in my life, and the idea of switching in and out of 1st person sounded cool.....

BUT: That game was very buggy, nothing and no one i know could run it through a single game man! That game caused much pain and suffering for me....

It looked like it would be a fun game, ill give you that....

But if you like it, more power to ya! to each his own I always say! I just cant stand it ;)

argh Dogs of War.....

Would you prefer that all your enemies just lay down and die for you? What is so tough about having to controll your y-axis aiming along with your x-axis?

I think there should be as much dodging as possible and have penalties for dodging (like having your aim go to shite).

If you can't hit me because because I jumped, you just need to work on your aiming a bit more.

My problem is not so much when people jump simply to dodge fire. My problem with jumping is two fold. One, that in most games your aim is not hindered while you are jumping like a madman. Two, that in many games people jump four feet in the air, successfully avoiding shotgun blasts from two feet away.

Hehe, i was playing CS yesterday. I have this tendency to aim high. I was running around with the M3 and just about to turn this corner a terrorist decided to jump out. you could say his face met every pellet in the shotgun. after the round was over i was hailed with all the cheat and hacker and aimbot comments i could handle before i burst out laughing.

There is a lesson to be learned here: If you are trying to catch a grasshopper, dont go to where he is, grab where he is gonna be!

Having no region specific damage will penalize those who are used to aiming for the head.

It is going to be wierd to have to aim for the chest instead of the head (especially in close combat situations).

i almost always duck when i confront somebody in sof2

by the time the readjust their aim lower, they're dead. :D

Ditto in games that let you lie down... ArmyOps and R6:raven shield.

I've won many a close-encounter because I hit the dirt and they didn't. Their fire hit the wall behind me, while I put a full burst into their chest. Most games won't let you aim too high while laying down.

Oh, and in army ops, if you hit the "lay down" button while running, you'll actuall dive forward. Great for getting away from grenades.

I suspect that the person who holds still, crouches, and shoots (cone of fire more like a line) will be far more deadly than the circle-strafing bunny-hoppers (cone of fire the size of their field of view). Crouchers might get sniped more often though.

I think the best tactic may end up being something like move-crouch-shoot-move-crouch-shoot... You'd still be moving around enough to not let some sniper take their time to line up on you, but you'd still be getting that tighest-possible cone of fire for pumping your target full of holes. Just staying crouched while you move may or may not work, depending on how much slower you move in that position.

My personal prefered fighting tactic is duck and strafe, runners still have to adjust their aim, but I have a decently tight spread.

Is there anyother way to play?

This is the way I play on every game that has a jump stanima/aim penalty. Urban Terror Mod for quake, Tac Ops, CS, DoD, Navy Seals Mod for quake.

It isn't that I don't like bunny hoppers.... wait I don't like bunny hoppers.
I do hop. But it is more like this.
I am sneaking from point A to point B and someone out of my sight shoots me and scares the crap out of me. So, I Jump, turn, find him and crouch while shooting. This makes me a harder target to hitat first. But I crouch in order to improve my aim. There are drawbacks to both crouching, and jumping. Jumping makes you are harder target, but screws up your aim and you can only do it so much. Crouching makes you a slow stationary target but improves your aim. I don't like Jumping that you can constantly do, or doesn't jack your aim.
This is why I don't like to play UT or Quake.
Same with moving, though there are times during close quarter fights where circle strafing is better then jumping and crouching. I only jump when I am surprised. I only crouch when I need to aim. I only strafe when I am close to the guy.

A good player uses all of the possible movements.
A good game balances these movements.
At least thats my opinion.

most games aren't really 3D, they just use the x and z axis (left, right, front, back). really no different from x/y axis side scrollers from sega and nintendo days (left, right, up, down) but tribes is all 3 axises and it takes skill. i don't know how many crazy good quake players i've met that won't play T2 or T1 b/c they "can't hit anything". if you have the skill to play it you'll never turn back.

btw for you tribers out there, doens't every game you pick up after playing the tribes series come REALLY easy to you? i mean bf1942 sniping was a breeze after Tribes and so was ut2k3.

UT2k3 is pretty easy anyways. The learning curve for it is nowhere near Tribes. UT is all about jumping and spraying weapons. I do however like instagib. I've always liked that one shot kill. Played it in q2 and I missed it by playing CS, tribes 2, etc.

... as a side note... I think the coolest shotgun shot I've ever seen was when a guy on my team and an enemy collided with eachother coming around a corner. The other guy started spraying the air. My teammate just ducked, pointed his shotgun almost straight up, and blew the guy's head off in one fluid motion. It was sweet. :)
