Punk Rock

I was working on one of my new pieces in photoshop today, with all of my Mogwai tracks playing, with shuffle turned on. A song came on, that features a speech of Iggy Pop(is that his name? i dont listen to him). I happened to stop and listen to it itently, and before now, i never really understood his message.


This is an excerpt from that song: entitled "Punk Rock" by Mogwai, that opens their record "Come On Die Young."

I'll tell you about punk rock: punk rock is a word used by dillitante's and ah... and ah... heartless manipulators about music that takes up the energies and the bodies and the hearts and the souls and the time and the minds of young men who give what they have to it and give everything they have to it and it's a... it's a term that's based on contempt, it's a term that's based on fashion, style, elitism, satanism and everything that's rotten about rock'n'roll. I don't know Johnny Rotten but I'm sure... I'm sure he puts as much blood and sweat into what he does as Sigmund Freud did. You see, what sounds to you like a big load of trashy old noise is in fact the brilliant music of a genius, myself . And that music is so powerful that it's quite beyond my control and ah... when I'm in the grips of it I don't feel pleasure and I don't feel pain, either physically or emotionally. Do you understand what I'm talking about? Have you ever felt like that? When you just couldn't feel anything and you didn't want to either. You know? Like that? Do you understand what I'm saying sir?

As for the message, I do agree with it. Punk Rock, is an extremely difficult medium to pull off. It could come out all screaming and power chords (most bands), or it can come out, as Iggy Pop stated, as something which makes you feel nothing, no pain, no pleasure, yet you have no desire to feel either. It's a sense of invincibility, a belief that you've disconnected from the world. Very difficult to invoke, yet highly addictive.

punk rock is not satanism...thats some strange shit...... punk is the style of music ...call it what you want unfortunetly some "faries" that are screaming about there girlfrinds that left em could indeed be punk just they bring a bad name to it... its how there music is played and how it sounds that determines its genre..music is truely inspirational to all and everyone is different and everyone has to deal with that.... people like blink 182 should be castrated but no one knows if we should do that because then they will just make pointless crappy songs about how they lost there nuts.... rap is a type of music......and for sure no one will get that mixed with punk but i dont know if people are getting what im saying but how music is played determines its genre/class...yes older punk rock is alot better.... NOFX is a good example since they have shit like 11 albums...... listen to older crap tho like stuff from white trash 2 ***** and a bean...or other stuff and for people truely "ignorant oh so ignorant" and only has heard ther song franco un-american on the radio and thinks they suck....listen to other shit of theres.... RIAA wont let other shit be played on air. Punk isnt roten rock and roll who ever wrote that is dumb ass...well at least for writing that punk is a term "based on satanism"....that just pisses me off :groovy:

well on one hand you have bands like the casulties.. just hardcore street punk. then you have shit like anti-flag. very political based. then you have bands like Bouncing Souls or hell even OneManArmy which is a bit of reality singing or songs about everyday life and the sound is a bit smoother sometimes slow.

Punk is a seriously overused and misunderstood word.
