I hear people talking about using voice comms in PS..
Some people want it integral to the game, but there are several 3rd party progs out there for this that work quite well IMO..

Roger wilco is often mentioned, but I haven't had much in the way of decent voicecomm out of that..

I've heard people talking about teamspeak, but I've got no idea how good that is..

No one seems to mention gamevoice (In the posts I've read), but I've had great success using that in many games.. Its decently clear, and pretty stable as far as I've used it..

When PS launches it'll be interesting to see if voicecomm picks up with it..

Which will you choose? And is teamspeak better than Gamevoice?

thx

My self and over 50 other's have used TS in ww2online for well over a year with no problem's...all at once..:)

Only thing i would say is..it work's better using a dedicated server..

Well, when I have to choose between either Teamspeak or Gamevoice, 2 things will go into my decision:

1. The clarity of either

2. Which one my squad and Planetside gamers use the most.

As you've pointed out, Teamspeak is mentioned most often and I can attest to its quality. I have never had an opportunity to use Gamevoice, but I don't see how it could be much better than Teamspeak.

Teamspeak2 > gamevoice.

I have used both. Teamspeak is head and shoulders above gamevoice or rogerwilco.

I am torn between wanting to use voice or just typing, I read earlier that sound has a major effect on frame rate, so voice chatting might not be such a great idea on the other hand it is fun... you'd only hear ppl in some 50 meter radius or something like that right?

As far as I know, Microsoft does not even support gamevoice anymore.

I've used TS2 w/ my clan in BF42 and it works pretty good. Occassionally someone's program will go haywire and they have to start it back-up but that's not really difficult.

Teamspeak 2 all the way.

My team in Tribes and Tribes 2 have tried many programs (RW, Teamsound, game voice, and others). Teamspeak 2 is the way to go.

Ventrilo, hands down the best voice comms I've used.

I've heard this from other people. But haven't looked into it.

My squad in JumpGate has used RogerWilco, Teamsound, and TeamSpeak 1&2. We currently use TS2. I guess becuase it is the most compatible with everyone, and most reliable. I know with Teamsound, I couldn't use it because of the way my Cable was set up. Something about a "fake IPA".

I'm going to get TS2 soon, but I have some questions...

Does it have any sort of effect on the frame-rate?

Can you switch who you are talking to in-game? I've heard folks talk about switching channels in-game. Is this real?

Does the game have to support it, or is it entirely independent?

1.) no, not really, unless your processor is already taxed

2.) yes

3.)entirely independant

The prob I had with the gamevoice software was that MS put in something that you had to have a min of 12 peeps on using it before it would work. The Sidewinder Gamevoice hardware is an awsome idea and works with any other chat/voice software with no prob. I haven't had a single prob with the hardware since I got it when it first came out. RW had some issues at time but, since Gamespy took it over it's not really worth the down load imo. Battle Com, Team Speak, and even an instant messenger chat program like Yahoo works ok but, definitely if you have another comp, host it on a dedicated server or have a highend machine that can handle running the game and the com program. If you haven't you know of the lag issues with the game and the delayed speach probs I'm talking about.

Do you use the gamevoice software that came with it or something else? Mine might just have been a bad version since I got it when it first hit the shelves.

We use the software that came with it....think 1 or 2 might be using the shareware version.
MSN messenger is supported also!!

I play online Games since Quake TeamFortress and Diablo...
When Halflife cames out i got started with Voicechats....
first i used was BattleCom.

My Opinion abaout BC, TS, RW, GV.

Battlecom 1.32/1.34:

Still the best Voicequality with low-Badwidthuse.(Delta/Standart)
Very compatible to all games.
Problems with Routers when trying to conenct to a server.... first u have to pipe some ports directly to the Network-IP, if they are masqueradet.
Great user interface.Good settings available.
BC-Servers are powerful can take many chatters.
My alternative solution.

TeamSpeak2.0:

For me the best Voicechat-Proggy available.
Excellent Voicequality with less more Bandwidthuse than BC.(GSM14.8 or 16.4)
Compatible to all games too. Perhaps u have to fix some adjustments.
Best user interface. Good settings available.
TS2.0-Servers are stablest i know and have a great capacity.
My favorite.

Rogerwilco(new-one):

For me the most shitty Voicechat out Inet.
Voicechat with lowest Voicequality and lowest Bandwith.
Very simple.
Compatible to most/all games.
I hate it.

GameVoice:

Voicechat-Proggy with medium Voicequality but more bandwitdhuse than all other voice-progs.
U must-have a registerered Version to open a Host with mroe than 5 Client-Slots(i think, long time ago).
Medium user interface. Only a few settings available.
It is Microsoft made.....

Gamevoice is just way to old, use TS2 it has a high quality and a low bandwidth use, also has a great support function for the old Gamevoice Hardeware.

I have never been able to get BCom to work properly on my computer. I always hear nothing but garbled voices. I have had better results with gamevoice and rogerwilco.

TS2 sems to be the best though. Best quality and it seems like it has the best user compatability.

Got some great feedback there..

admittedly, I've tried RW, but thought it was crap voice quality..

I've used Gamevoice primarily but will try Teamspeak for sure..

Ranger: I'm not sure what you were mentioning about needing 12 people to run GV, I have a GV chat set up dedicated on my server and then jump on from my comp.. Talk to a friend of mine in California all the time, avoids all that long distance..

Sometimes there's an echo but it was worth it for the quick communication.. My main gripe would be that sometimes people got dropped from the conversation, and there were issues getting into the chat if I wasn't the first one in..

With all this positive feedback, looks like I'll have to give Teamspeak a try, thanks guys..

You will really be suprised at the difference in the clarity and voice quality between the two.

It just runs in the background, you either set it on voice activation or bind a key to the mic

Use Ventrilo. We've got a server at a data farm in Dallas with a 150 day uptime and 40 pings from Tennesee to Canada.

What's the bandwidth required for the server?

My cable modem is something on the order of 1024 down, 128 up (super downloads, upload not very super).

Bout how many people can I expect to host on that? I have a seperate computer I can use to run the server, but it'll be sharing the network with my main computer.

@Pecos_Bill:

Your network connection is decisive.

With 128 kbps upload u can host an 8-Slots Teamspeak(codec gsm14,8) and play CS or BF without probs, but not more than 8.

Best is u or your clan rent an dedcated TS2.0 Server like my clan or someone can host a Server who has a big connection.

We've run a server on someone's cable before. However if you need large amounts of people (say > 15 or so) then it's time to look else where (unless the line isn't used at all).

Pecos_Bill

Actually found I can upgrade my cable to 256 upload for a smidgen more per month. I imagine that could at least support 1 squad with room to spare.

I'll have to look into server rentals though.

At 12.8KB/s up, you can expect to host 3-4 clients well without any troubles. After that, here comes the lag.
