Smaller continents sucks. So what, a bunch of crybabies can't find a target. Look for a fucking hotspot maybe? I like the continents the way they are. I think they're too small as it is, but I put up with it. I could deal with MORE continents that are smaller, though.
Anyway, who gives a shit about new continents? We've been asking for an expansion that doesn't suck. Like naval or space. You want more diversity? Try a subsurface underwater battle where you're not just grabbing a base. Not some lame-ass dork island.
We've been asking for things that already suck and already exist to get fixed. Like bases. Who builds a base with a back door that any shmoe with a REK can break into? Where's this vaunted "blast door that hacks from within"? Where's these raising and lowering blast walls in the courtyard entrances (like drawbridges almost)? It's easier to redesign a base or add something that doesn't swallow so much sweaty donkey nut like a Phalanx turret. Something that actually defends and doesn't die to a Decimator round.
Redesign the bases first, make them more defendable- people have been screaming about THAT forever. Devs say "We want defenders to actually have a hope" (see in-development)... well friggin prove it. Don't give us some retarded rehash of our favorite continents. If I wanted the fucking Fruit Medley, I'd get the fucking Fruit Medly. Now I want my game fixed- not have my attention diverted by suckier, smaller continents where my FPS will drop to absolute SHIT and I'll lag so bad I can see the Revolution as it happens instead of reading about it 200+ years later.

I dont think the current conts are getting smaller, though. I'm pretty sure they're keeping the current conts about the same SIZE, just re-working the layout, etc..The new continents are going to be totally new, and they will be smaller. At least, I think this is how it went, I didn't catch all of the announcement.

I read the thread. CriticalMass said they're replacing the old continents. Whether it happens slowly, gradually over time, or all in one, I don't care.
Okay- cut away unused portions of land. Well shit, why don't we just make a football field and slap some bases in the end zone. We'll make it like Stratego or Checkers, eh?
I don't know about you, but I use the little islands off the coast of Esamir. I can set up an AMS on that tiny chunk of land. I go across the water from the Warpgate to Wele on Cyssor- it beats traveling around South America just-cuz there was no Panama Canal. That little island on Amerish? That peninsula on Ceryshen? The ones you think no one ever goes to?
I go there. I find a high art of tactical implementation in "honey spots" like these. And on more than a dozen occasions, those simple out-of-the-way spots have led to victory for my empire. Just because it's not along the road from Anu to Seth doesn't mean someone doesn't use it.

They have already stated that they will be redesigning the base layouts and such, along with captiol buildings.

I'm going to reserve my opinion until I see more about what they plan. New continents do give the ability to change the bases and other strutures.
My hope is that one "map" will be an archipelago, with multiple islands to control before locking down the chain. Controlling the facilities on the islands would require that a group can muster enought transport to hop between the islands (Deliverers, hover vehicles, dropships, air cavalry, etc). Of course, having larger land masses interspersed with the chains would be good.

Firefly they're only replacing one or a couple of continents with these groups of battle islands, not all of them.
They can't redesign the bases until they change the data structures, then they can go about bas changes.
Many people have asked for more compact gameplay, not me personally, but I don't see what's wrong with giving the community something they want.
And like has already been said, they're shaking up the gameflow a bit so I agree it's a case of just waiting and see what cool stuff they come up with.

They said they are keeping some of the larger continents so we will still have our massive battle grounds but also some smaller ones too.

They shou;d not get rid of any of the continents, just ajust them all and then add the smaller ones on the side.
If Cyssor, esmir, cery, or forceal are gone i will kill a dev a day untill fixed

I don't think they'll be removing Ceryshen as it has the mysterious extra warpgate.
I have a feeling that the small battle islands are going to be passed into fiction as a massive natural disaster ripping some of the continents apart.... well at least I get my earthquakes :D

Personally I had really hoped for something else, something that would really enhance the gameplay a lot. As it is now, PS lacks persistance, something which MMOs tend to have more or less.
But, I am not very certain if SOE will deliver with this "huge" thing. Over the past year, SOE has promised a lot, but not delivered. The things that were promised just before the game went retail (skyguard, lib, lodestar, platoons, few more things) did happen but besides that hardly anything that was talked about, discussed and promised have appeared in-game.
Capital buildings, LLU system, Vehicle Variants, Empire Incentives. Don't sell the devs short.

Mag is right. Everything they put in-game has made a fair difference, if not huge. Personally I think they have worked hard and I have enjoyed every patch they have put in so far.

I'll reserve my opinion until I see what actually gets implimented. Things tend to change from announcement to deployment especially in creative design.
I've wanted smaller "skirmish" islands for some time now. Infantry only would be a nice addition to the game. Some of my more favorite battles were infantry only. Of course I've had some great tank fights and sone great ariel duels as well...
I'd not mind seeing:
A 3-way CTF island with 1 base for each team where you can earn small amounts of CEP for capturing enemy flags (based upon the unique enemy kills formula). This would be a perpetual game so unlike Quake and Unreal there would be no "timer" or "map change upon a win". This should be infantry and maybe MAX units only... with the stipulation that MAX units cannot be flag carriers.
A "neutral ground" dueling island like a sanctuary for all 3 empires where there are "hot spots" that weapons can be used. Arenas could exist where spectators can watch the duels while waiting in a queue to join the action. There would need to be a system for issuing challenges, joining a round robin queue, 1v1 as well as team dueling, and a method of "starting" the duel...
A 3-way "normal" PS play style islans(s) with 3 specially designed bases complete with towers, but only infantry and MAX units would be allowed. The key difference would be that you cannot "lock" the island even if you control all 3 bases... oh and no warp gates, so only hot dropping works... oh and no "link to friendly base" required to hack a base...
Remember these would not change the regular game play... they would just be VERY fun options to regular game play...
I find that to get these game play variations sone of my firends are playing OTHER games... it would be cool if PS would grow to meet most of your first person shooter needs all in one game... I miss the action of Capture the Flag, Rocket Arena, and the like and would love base fights free of vehicles...
I like them except the three way sanc dual place. What's EXTREMELY annoying about fighting by a wg is that the enemy can just go in when they are near dead and switch vehicles or hide on the other side and repair. So many kills have escaped me this way...

That's not really what I'm talking about... entrance and exit of the dueling area would be controlled by the game...
Here is an example of how this could be implimented:
1. Have a neutral sanctuary where any empire can recall to
2. Have several "Arenas" set up where you can enter spectator areas to look down upon the combatants.
3. In this spectator area have a terminal that allows you to sign up to fight
4. You then spectate until it's your turn to fight, of if you don't access the terminal and "sign up" you can just spectate if you want or leave and return to normal PS.
5. When your turn is up you deconstruct from the spectator area and reconstruct in the arena with the loadout of your choice.
6. To exit the arena you have to die. When you die you return to the spectator area and can enter the queue again, watch for a while, or leave.
The rules could be sinple or complex. Will this simply be a "last man standing" dueling option where you fight until you die? Perhaps with a special chalange/acceptance system to let outfits (even of the same empire) duel? No grief here :) Just good fights on player determined temporary teams... 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, etc...
This could be handled 1,000 different ways... some of the amusing thigs we do now in the regular game are "Tower Wars" where we meet players from another empire and take turns attacking and defending towers... and of course 1v1 dueling in an abandoned base somewhere...
Would be sweet to see this as a game play option within the game and perhaps a seperate ranking system for top duelers, top CTF teams, and Best Tower defenders/attackers... etc...
