God, I'm so sorry! Be comforted in the fact that there are a lot of us out there who have been in a similar shitty situation, and we know how terrifying it is.

I know it is a really hard thing to do, but if he threatens you or hits you, call the police. They are trained to diffuse situations like yours and can offer you and your mother the protection you need.

Last time my dad tried to get tough with me, he put me in a headlock. He put the meat of his arm a little too close to my mouth. Took a chunk out of his hand.

my dad started acting like that a couple years ago, he was screaming and always pissed about something. I finally told him to shut the fuck up. He flipped outand started breaking my stuff. I decided to take one of the only things that made him happy. His MP3 collection that he had collected over 4-5 years. I deleted the entire file. He than said don't you ever fuck with me. I gave him the finger and said what are you gonna do if do. He thought about it and then walked away because I'm 8 inches taller than he is, and a hell of a lot stronger.

he still gets pissed every once of a while, and has to go to a psychiatrist.
