View Full Version : Hard Drive Problem

I recently went out and bought a new HD. 200Gb for $70.
It works great, and I have very few complaints except one.

Windows only reads it as being 127 Gb large.
Alcohol 120% sees the rest of the drive is there, and even gives me an option to make a partition on it, but I'd rather just get windows to see all 200 gb.

Any Ideas? Corrosion says that SP1 will fix it, but it dosent seem to.
Thanks!

mhmm, Is that soldner i see? I thougth it wasn't out for a month yet.

Wait, so you are using that as the system drive. Why's that?

Basicaly what happend is you formated it with a windows that didn't support higher, so your stuck with the smaller partition unless you format it with SP1 wich can create partitons that big

I see..

FUCK.

So I'm either stuck making the extra space into a 3rd partition, or formating AGAIN (formated monday) and installing windows on the 120 (which i tried to do monday but it got fucked up somehow...) then updating the win on the 120 to SP1, then adding in the 2nd drive?

Seems like a shit-load of work.

:(

Edit: Well, alright. I now have "3" Hds.
another quick question:
Is it possible to.. (on one hard dive with 2 partitions,) format one partition while leaving the other entirely intact? I.E. back up all the shit I need to the 2nd half of my 200 GB, then erase both the 200 part with windows, and the 120 with other shit at the same time?

re edit: you've done the right thing. and yes, you can format those partitions independantly of each other and swap stuff back and forth.

you can even put seperate installations of windows on them, if you want.

my edit:
i'm a huge fan of partitioning drives. it improves drive performance in a couple different ways.

i have to tell you, though, i might have gone a bit overboard with mine.

Martyr is crazy. Then again... im prolly gonna make a separate partition for my page file if i ever get around to it.

O_ Hfs..

Well, once I get my own system I might do that.
my rents would FREAK if I did it on the comp we share.

Matyr's gone Partition Happy.

Thoguth haveing a seperate partition for the Pagefile is not a bad idea

Noob question: wtf is the pagefile? and should I make a partition for it next time I format?

I get this horrible freezeing problem when I play games. It lasts for 30-40 seconds, then continues on. Makes playing Splinter Cell impossible (more waiting for it to unfreeze, than actual playing).

At first I thought it was my HD, but after I formated it still does it. Now I suspect its the graphics card. Wanted to get a new one anyways.

The page fiel is a thing that acts liek RAM only its on the Hardrive, and much slower.

hmm, you have a singe channel motherboard my friend that is losing you lots of memory bandwidth(if you put in another stick of 512, witch would help alot), just so you know.

run adawae/spybot/norton.

New driver for the thingy might help as well

thingy being everything, and run a driver cleanser of some kind, many found www.guru3d.com along with other drivery bits, and mecileanous bobs

For original poster - you can use partition magic and add the extra space to get the full 200. I haven't used PM in a LONG time. Was an old version, and it trashed things. But I've heard favorable things of the latest versions.
