View Full Version : Thinking of buying PS...should I?

Like the title says, I'm thinking of jumping in this game. My question: is the game past the point of a noob starting from scratch (i.e. getting into EQ for the first time right now)?
I'm between MMO games right now, and want something more substantial (persistant) than UT2004 and the like.
If PS is still ripe for a noob, should CC be bought right away as well? Finally, any general suggestions when first starting out?
Thanks in advance,

The whole thing about PS is that new characters arnt gimped in combat compaired to a BR20 CR5. The only diffrence is that the BR20 CR5 has more options in combat than the BR1. A BR1 can still kill a BR20 we all have the same levels of health.

The beauty of Planetside is that getting higher level attains you not higher power, but greater versatility. Now, some may equate the two, but versatility is not the same as raw power per se. Thus, if two players with MCGs are both in Agile Exosuits with the same health and armor, for example, the winner is decided by skill, even if one of the said Agiles is BR20 and the other is BR5. So, the game could easily be defined as 'ripe for noobs'.
Core Combat is not a necessity for players beginning the game. I myself did not buy Core Combat until a few weeks ago, but have been playing since before the expansion came out. The problem is that the vast majority of Core Combat is fairly worthless: The Flail is a grief machine, the Switchblade is Decimator bait, the Spiker takes forever to kill with, and so on and so forth. Given that CC is $30, it just isn't worth it. However, you will probably end up buying CC eventually, just to try out the equipment and draw your own conclusions.
The best suggestion I can give you for starting out is to join a good Outfit. There is no replacement for this: Joining a top-notch Outfit early in your Planetside career will not only greatly increase your garnered BEP, but also give you a solid base of Internet buddies to help you out. For my own selfish purposes, I'd recommend that you join the start a Terran character on Emerald, and join my Outfit, Black Widow Company. However, it's really up to you. Some other excellent Outfits out there are the NC Markov Black Hawks, the TR Emerald Dragon Wolves, and the TR Emerald Trimmers. Finally, be aware that server location really is immaterial. I live on the West Coast, but play on Emerald (the East Coast server) with the exact same ping as I get on Markov. I hope this helps.

FYI: The game is very cool... but be warned the "system requirements" advertized are just not realistic.
YOU NEED AT LEAST:
1+ GIG of RAM
2+ GHz Processor
128 or 256 meg Video Card
If you have less in any of these categories you will have performance problems. So unless you love laggy first person shooter deaths you will need to upgrade your computer.
I currently have:
1 gig of ddr ram
1.53 GHz processor
128 meg video card
And I lag in meduim sized battles and the game is unplayable in large battles...

GOD DAMN IT MAN
Vidoeo memory deos not matter. How many times must i tell people?
If shoud read: Fx5600/Radeon 9600 or comparable chipest video card.
See the original ost generaly makes people thing that wooT! i have a 256 meg card it must be uber, but then it turns out to be an FX5200, that card sucks major ass, and most varieties of it come in 256 meg to fool people into buying it.
But if you bough a computer tha cost 1k or greater(bought from Dell or the like, 700 for home built), in the past year and a half it will be fine but otherwaise you need an upgrade.

Yeah don't bother unless you got more than 512 MB RAM. Or well 512 used to cut it back last summer to the fall, but not now.

I remember when I was without cable for a week, stuck with 56k, and tried to play Planetside.
Basically, it took over a half hour just to log on, and then I went into battle. Holy shit. I was using my NC guy, and I ran up to a group of six Terrans who were running into a base. Everything seemed fine, I ran up to one and triple-shot him with my JH(back when I actually used the hunk of junk, I've been JH-free for about three months) and nothing happened, so I did it again...suddenly, I was about a hundred feet away from the group, so I started running towards them again, and I was right next to them again. By now they were shooting randomly, I'm sure I was warping all over the place to them, and I decided to stand still. It took fully ten seconds for them to stop shooting all over the place and all home in on my position, it was pretty funny.
Moral of the story: If you want to laugh at the sheer triviality of it all, play on a 56K. Otherwise, get cable. :groovy:

LOL Good idea!!!
I play on Werner and have 512RAM and apart from a little bit of lag every now and again, I have no troubles. The only problems I get are fuckin internet popups that I can't stop!!!!!! They minimise the game at the worst possible moment...

Go d/l Adaware or Spybot - Search and Destroy. It will solve all those popup issues.

True. I'm running FarCry on it now with most settings on the high end with beautiful results.
This is my "get me through another couple of months" machine until I build a new desktop PC this fall.

Check us out, were an NC Markov outfit coming into its prime. Operational detachments are rising, our players are all becoming effective killwhores, we've got some rising commanders, and a great community.
When you join SnH, you join a fellowship, not an outfit.

I was thinking of getting PS as well but i just wanted to know, does it take a long time to get into and get familiar with all the controls and abilities etc. ?

PS is like the saxophone: Easy to learn, impossible to master. The learning curve to understand how to play your character and operate your certs and weapons isn't to steep; however, understanding the tactical and strategical vagaries of combat is something else entirely.
