From the site that brings you very first news of Planetside information ranging from Beta to Battle Islands comes the very first PlanetSide Fan Faire (PlanetSide Universe: Mobilization Alpha)! What is Planetside Universe: Mobilization Alpha you ask? Well, PSU:MA is the very first PlanetSide event where you will be able to meet and have fun with other members of the Planetside community, all in the beautiful city of Orlando, Florida! There will be events, dinners, and more.
If you ever wanted to meet anyone from the PS Community, now is your chance! The Mobilization is open to all, and there is even a possibility of Developer Attendance! The cost per person is just $350 - that buys you 2 full days of events including Universal Studios Florida, Medieval Times, Disney World, and don't forget room and board! For a full rundown of PSU:MA information and details click here (http://mobilization.planetside-universe.com/). For a list of current attendees, click here (http://www.planetside-universe.com/mobilization/registered.php).

Optional:
Spending money
Cameras
Clean underwear
Bathing suit / Swimming costume
Pirate hat
It is highly recommended that you label everything you bring with your name, and in the case of luggage, your name and address. There will be white t-shirts and cameras everywhere, so if you don't label it, there's a good chance of it getting lost. You wouldn't want your pirate hat to get misplaced, would you?

I think I should move "pirate hat" from "optional" to "mandatory".

Triggar... you already I got my PM but my dad has another question... you said it was based around 30 people attending... before he commits to anything he wants to know what happens if you don't get 30 people... (I told him there was a likely chance you would... but he's ever the skeptic...)

In order to participate in any event for the PSU Mobilization, you must be registered. To ensure the safety and security of the Mobilization group and to protect Sony assets, no unregistered guests will be permitted to attend any Mobilization events, with no exceptions.
At the time of online registration, a non-refundable $150 deposit will be due towards the total balance. The remaining $200 must be received no later than August 1st.
Oh dear. I guess I won't be able to join you guys for dinner Sunday after all. Considering that registration requires payment, I don't think I can justify $350 for one meal, no matter how awesome it would be to meet you all. :p
Oh well. Maybe you'll see me drive by that night. Be sure to honk when you do; I drive a black Honda CRV with a "St. Andrews College" decal in the back window. lol.

correct. $350 is what it costs to attend PSU:MA. The rest of the costs incurred are up to you.
Triggar
2004-06-07, 10:33 PM
Yep - after you pay the $350, all you'll need to do is get there.
I didn't budget for breakfast/lunch, but I'm enclosing menu's from the hotel restaurant and you can go online to read about the restaurants in the parks (outside of the ones we're going to for dinner) - my travel guides all agree that $15 for a fast-food lunch in the parks is a pretty good estimate.
I estimate that breakfast, including tax and drink, should only cost about $10.
Just to keep that in mind :)

But, as you'll see on the "General Information (http://www.planetside-universe.com/mobilization/general.php)" page off the Mobilization site, it covers quite a lot. And, it's in Orlando during peak tourist season, so a lot of prices get hiked up by the companies this time of year.

So the 150 bucks I pay ahead is part of the total 350 cost?
Incase something happens and I can't go. Can I revoke my application before July 15? And not pay?

The $150 goes towards the $350. If you pay the deposit now, you owe $200 by August 1st.
The $150 deposit is non-refundable.
So the 150 bucks I pay ahead is part of the total 350 cost?

haha, havent been here in a while...my old account is non-exhistant! well, that or i just forgot my user/pw ;) Anywho, who here even vaguely remembers the ol' Agent? (I'll be surprised if anyone ;))
Anywho, I'm plannin' on driving down and hookin up with my good buddy Josh (OneManArmy) and from there we're gonna road trip it to Orlando. At this point, you may be asking yourselves "Is that boy crazy?!11!?" Well, when you drive between Michigan and New York regularly for school (though I've now transfered back to NY for college), a drive down to NC is nothing...that and we vacation down there often as well.
Anywho, to the point - I'm not going to register quite yet b/c I'm still in the midst of a financial hurricane. Going to be moving into a new apartment, in the works for a new car and I have tuition, furniture, and other misc expenses to worry about before the start of next semester. So, once i figure out the damage report on the home front, I'll know whether or not I can sell an arm and possibly my leg to come up with the $350 + $____ for other random daily costs.
Also, I have a quick question - are we doing this like a tour group/guide excursion where we just follow you event admins around to get us into places, or upon full payment / arrival we'll recieve our tickets and what not to the events?

Triggar

But the group can split up in the parks, and reconvene in time to go to dinner. After dinner, back at the hotel, we're planning activities for the group, so you might want to be around for that since you can win free stuff.

I have a small proposal (unfortunately it would probably complicate things :( ).
Local residents who come, like myself, might be in a bind. Aside from the rooming with fellow players experience, it would be hard for them justify staying at a hotel so close to home.
Could something like a Mobilization Alpha: Ready Reserve be created? :p Something like a registration tool for the more local players, allowing them to opt out of paying for hotel rooms but allowed to join some of the other festivities? Like the themeparks and dinners.
Again that probably complicates things, but it's just an idea for the local peeps.

if you do that, Hayoo, youll probably have to be excluded from the group rates. Im sure Triggar could find a way to let you in on events.

hayoo, as i've mentioned to the staff, it would hugely complicate things, since we're looking at doing some of our events on the resort, and we can't bring non-guests into the property (we couldn't even go see the pool when we visited last weekend)
the resort suite costs $27 for one person for all three nights (right, $9/night/person), and it's a great place, so we consider the savings negligible, and probably aren't going to make a commuter schedule

Indeed. Any commuters would also have to meet us in front of the hotel at 0930 sharp in order to catch the shuttle to the parks, and would have to depart as soon as we got back to the hotel after a day's worth of activities, instead of hanging out with the group in the hotel and partaking in the group activities. In the end, we decided that it isn't worth the trouble for a mere $27 savings.

I doubt local residents would mind that so much since they'd be saving on travel, room, and board. Not to mention that Florida residents sometimes get cheaper rates anyway.
You have to admit, getting to hang out with the group even a little is better than not being able to at all...especially with being so close. A registration for this type of group would keep everything legitimate and properly monitored, hence the 'reserve' moniker. :p
Now I'm not asking about the possibilities so much for myself, as I am for any local residents (and their parents, if any) who might be in the area (0-30min distance).

I have a question. Since it appears we may peak and even go over the original goal of 30 people, the number Triggar based the prices on, will we get a break on the price if it is more than the 30?
Triggar
2004-06-09, 11:50 AM
a) To answer your original question - nope, the price will remain the same no matter how many people we get onboard. This is because we'd need to get more hotel rooms, a larger restaurant reservation, and more park tickets (we're already getting the group discount with the 30 people estimate), so the total cost will be proportionally more, but divided among more people, will remain constant.
b) I'm thinking about setting a "cap" to how many people can register. This will prevent me from having to completely overhaul any aspect of the planning to accomodate a really huge crowd. The number I'm thinking right now is 50 people, because after that, I'd have to cancel restaurant reservations and book a banquet hall and caterer, find alternate modes of transportation, and possibly get a new hotel depending on the Sheraton's availibility.
I know that might put a kink in a lot of people's plans, but I would rather have all my efforts focused on improving the event we've got in planning now, than to have to spend my time re-doing the work I've already done :)
EDIT: We've got 30 spots reserved right now, with only about five or six paid and confirmed. This means we've got 20 spots left, not including any reserved spots that can be released if we don't get a deposit paid!

Alright guys, here's the new deal:
*All registration and deposits are due by July 15th - that hasn't changed. What's changed is that we will only be accepting 50 people to attend the Mobilization, not including Admins. By July 15th, I'll take the list of people registered, and compare it to the list of people who've at least paid the deposit. If any people on the list haven't paid by then, they lose their spot and someone in the reserve will take it. The reservist has 24 hours to pay their deposit.
*We are only accepting 75 registrations. 50, as I said, will be attending the meet, and the other 25 will be reserves in case someone does not pay.
I'm sorry I had to cap the event, but this is my first time planning anything of this scale, and I want to see how this one turns out before I plan a massive one like perhaps Mobilization Bravo.
If you've got any questions about it, chat with me on #mobilization on IRC, or send me an email at

Alright, I've had to make another change, I hope that you don't mind :-\
The staff at Margaritaville were not being professional in the least. I'd leave all three of the group sales reps voicemails, and they would never call me back. I got one woman to call me back a week later, that's when I made our reservations. She said she'd be mailing out the group menu, but she never did, and she said she'd send me an email confirmation, but she never did.
So I cancelled our reservation there, and booked us at Hard Rock Cafe. The Hard Rock saleswoman was extremely helpful - I've already received their group email, and she says we get "custom menu's". I don't know what that means of yet, but I'll let you know.
Even when I just went to cancel our Margaritaville reservations, I was like, "Planetside, 30 people, August 22nd". She was like, "June?" and I said, "No, August." Then she goes, "Okay, July 15th?" and I go, "No, August 22nd." She breathes and goes, "Ohh. Okay, sorry! Okay, so 15 people for August 30th..." I wanted to hang up on her.
So yeah, please don't hate me, but I'd bet they'd lose our reservation once we got there anyway and we'd be up the chocolate river without a popsicle stick!

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT:
Would all who are planning on flying into the Mobilization but have NOT YET BOOKED THEIR FLIGHTS please send me an email ASAP.
Also, I need the flight information for all who've already booked their flights (if you haven't gotten it to me already) - if you don't send it, we won't pick you up at the airport!
I spoke to Spork's sister today (making me the only PSU'er to not only talk to the Dev's, but their family as well) and she's got some awesome things for us that might mean that some details might need to be changed, but I promise that any changes will be for the better, and I promise to let you all know well ahead of time.

I might just ask my parents. I live four hours from Orlando, so airfare is not a problem.
Here is the plan.
My mom has more or less forced me into working in my dad's office for the summer. He is a surgeon, she does the paperwork (billing the patients, etc.) Words cannot describe the boredom that this work forces upon its laborer.
Originally she was going to pay me (and my brother) $7 a day. (We're underage, anyway, minimum wage does not apply.) This amounts to $35 a week, assuming a 5-day workweek. I don't know how many weeks this is go to on, but it is probably at least four. $35 x 4 = $140. This is a good share of the $360, 38% of it to be precise.
However, I considered it...unhonorable, for lack of a better word, to get paid by your parents. Don't ask. So I will do this for free.
However, I am unable to contain my fancing with the idea of heading out with you guys. I may require mild substance abuse beforehand to attain the courage/stupidity (either one works) of actually asking my parents to take me, during school, to go see a bunch of people I don't know and sleep with them for a few nights.
But I'll try and ask them, most certainly before July 15 ($150 deposit required) rolls around.

Okay, so I've read through every post here and am still not completely clear on the deal for locals. I'm not particularly interested in any park activities as a local native, but would certainly like to meet fellow PS folk at any of the other activities. Things happening at the hotels and/or dinner venues do not require any sort of admission (except Medieval Times), so could an itinerary be sent to the locals interested in attending?

Thing is, I've got my hands not just full, but overflowing with planning the standard, $360/person event. I'm really, really hesitant to start configuring a plan for locals who just want to pop in for a few hours. I don't want to not charge people, becuase then the people who are paying the whole fee will be taken advantage of, but I don't want to rework the entire cost breakdown and change reservations to accomodate one more person. For the restaurants, I've had to sign a contract and mail it back with my credit card information on it that says we'll have exactly 50 people - so screwing with things and making that 51, and then screwing with the shuttle services and everything else....
...well, to be honest, it's a lot of trouble, and it's a lot of effort spent greasing someone into sections of the plan, it's effort that I feel like I should be using to finish working on the standard week.

No sweat, I wasn't expecting to be included in any of the pre-planned reservations or mooch on anyone's dime. The hotels are all very cool about folk dropping by visiting guests and such as long as you respect their parking requirements, and as crappy as the service is at Hard Rock even they can handle a bill for a separate party. Orlando area locals know what I'm talking about, we live here. And we'd like to meet our fellow gamers. :D
But really, after thinking about it, if you'd just post the times of stuff we can figure the rest out and stop by what we'd like to participate in. Then there's no additional planning stress! ;)

The problem is, the restaurants we're going to require everyone in the group to be on one bill in order to receive the group discount. Our bill will be paid in advance, our menu's are already set, and we'll be in a private room (for Planet Hollywood and Hard Rock Cafe).

It's just too difficult and unfair to those attending, just shell out the reg fee like everyone else has to and eveyone will be happy. There is only one catagory to PSUMA - and that includes everything. It's just too much of a pain imo to have a few people who only want to participate half way.

Yeah, I'd have to rework everything to include everything but the hotel.
Like right now, I have the restaurants set up to include 50 people. Adding two there but taking two from the hotel numbers completely screws everything up.
And also, I just had a look at the general info page, and it says this:
In order to participate in any event for the PSU Mobilization, you must be registered. To ensure the safety and security of the Mobilization group and to protect Sony assets, no unregistered guests will be permitted to attend any Mobilization events, with no exceptions.
So yeah.

Okay all, this is getting WAY outta hand. Look at it this way: Some PS locals would like to stop by and say "Hi!". We don't want to crash any packaged deals or mooch food. Most of us are over-30 IT professionals and obviously know how to pull up a chair to shoot the bull about the happenings on Auraxis while covering our own check. I personally do this quite a bit with other visiting "delegations" at Planet Hollywood, Margaritaville, Hard Rock, Rainforest etc. and the wait staff can handle it. It's their job. If we KNEW when y'all would be at certain publicly accessible places (ie everything but the parks) then we could do just that.
Yes, it's just that simple.
If it's not getting through, don't worry, we'll be more than happy to stay clear, no harm done.

I'm not trying to make this difficult for people, I just don't want it to be August 22nd and have everything go to hell.
If you want to join up with us, then I'd just suggest going to either Disney or Universal and trying to find our group.
I live in Florida myself, I understand that it'd be easier for you guys if I just went ahead and made two seperate costs. But what I don't think you guys understand is, I'm working 8 hours a day on planning this thing as it is, it's a lot of work, and I really don't want to take the time I need to spend on the standard mobilization to worry about and plan for an alternate. I also don't want to risk us losing our group rates by "breaking their rules" and getting extra people at our table but on separate bills. I can tell you right now, the woman from Medieval Times was adamant that everyone at our table must be on one bill to get the discounted rate.
So again, I don't want to be a witch here, but this is a lot of work, and I'm busting my ass as it is. I don't want anything to screw anything else up. I don't want to have 20 Florida residents coming onboard without being registered - it isn't fair, and it complicates things like you couldn't understand.
