View Full Version : Online journals are for (annoying) teenage girls
TekDragon

I was going to write this in another thread but I think it deserves a topic of it's own.
Perhaps I am simply seeing it from the wrong direction. Perhaps I am not being in touch with my expressive side. Perhaps I need to be more sensitive and be more inclined to write about my feelings.
Or perhaps i'm right and online journals are a fucking huge phony act meant for the same type of people who, in real life, are called "posers". Perhaps they really ARE simply tools of egoisticism for people to write innecent drivel about their lives and pretend everyone will read it and care.
Wow, you ate a sandwich and went to the mall today. That's great, write it in on your online journal so the whole world can see and spend the next hour debating with themselves philosophically over whether you took the correct cource of action in eating the sandwich before you left. Pardon me while I roll my eyes.
Or maybe you got in a argument with someone today? Do you suck it up and find the correct cource of action (either an apology or a punch to the nose)?
No!
Instead you spend the day thinking how your going to word this on your "command center of phonyness". As soon as you get home you run to your PC and write about the argument and the other person, expecting everyone who reads it to have a huge outcry of sympathy/support. Pardon me while my eyes roll out of my fucking head.
There is only ONE reason to have an online journal. That reason is:
Your a melodramatic drama queen of the female persuasion in the age of 12-16 who's entire focus is yourself and your social life.
If you don't fall into that category and you have an online journal then
PULL THE FUCKING PLUG AND GET OVER YOURSELF!

Did you read my post?
If your question is:
"Do Blogs fall under the category of self centered, drama queen inspired, incesent drivel that no one cares about but is written to satisfy some egoistical need for public approval?"
If that's your question, then yes.
There are only 2 legitimate reasons to write a journal if your not in the teenage girl category above.
1. Your a scientist doing an experiment.
2. Your an insane man about to commit a mass murder w/ suicide.

Most of the PSU staff has 'em. They don't really seem like the "Whiney look at me my life sucks blah blah blah" blogs though.

All PSU staff have blogs. Thats the only reason I asked :p
They comment on things like planetside, psu, and recently, PSUMA. Hamma also talks about visas and such for jenny, and things along that line. There are also every day activitys, but, hamma is so leet everyone wants to know about them.

If it's a PSU Staff blog then it's obviously done as an information tool. Not as a "look at me! Im a drama queen" tool.

First of all I'd like to say I don't have an online journal, and I don't want one.
But why the hell would anyone other than me care? I write whatever the fuck I want, in the end you choose to read it. I don't care whatever you label me, if it makes me feel better that's all I care about.

You write whatever the fuck you want. That's right. And when your at that step your fine. It's making you feel better to write it out.
It's when you take the step to posting it online that you go from "helping yourself" to "being an attention starved drama queen".
It's not about whether people read it or not, it's the fact that YOU posted it for the ONLY purpose of having OTHER people read it. If that wasn't your purpose you would have made it a PRIVATE journal. When you write it for the ONLY purpose of having OTHER people read it, you become exactly what i was labeling - an egoistic, drama queen poser.
[Edit] Your not, Bio.

What about, say, political blogs like Right Wing News, Daily Kos, Rachel Lucas, etc? Things that are basically opinionated newspapers (they give you some news and then do a response with their opinion, kinda like the opinion section in your newspaper, but it doesn't suck), not about bullshit stuff that nobody besides the writer cares about.
Btw, my brother has one of those, it is completely stupid. I personally find him fairly effeminate, I mean he watches azumanga daioh!, which is basically this show about a bunch of teenage girls and their teachers, one of which is a pedophile, and their stupid little adventures that really suck. And this little ad at the beginning says anime is "for mature people, definitely not kid stuff". I almost vomited right there, this azumanga daioh! thing is basically a crappy kid show with a bit of cussing, from what I've heard while I'm playing awesome games on my comp and he's watching it up here. If you're gonna watch anime, at least watch good anime like Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, etc.
And he loves old arcade games, and claims I'm "shallow" when I don't like his anime or his stupid games, like those things where you're a spaceship and you fly around shooting lots of lasers at your enemies (think Ikaruga for Gamecube). I've played those kinds of games, they suck, so I don't really intend to play them because he calls me shallow.
This guy puts on his asshat every goddamn day, just wakes up and contemplates how to merge the hat to his skull so it can be on all the time. I'm conservative, he's a hate-America liberal, so whenever we get into fights he pulls the "facist" thing out because that's what George Carlin says about conservatives. GC is a funny guy, but his political opinions are merged too much with his comedy, it'd be great if he could just leave them in the limo when he goes to perform. Tony (brother) holds himself as this super-intellectual guy who can always go around and correct everyone else. He's proud of himself that he whores ice like a mofo (he fills his glasses at home like 75% full of ice, then puts a little bit of pop with it) and how he devoured like this whole box of chocolite chip cookies because "I hogged the gingersnaps". Yep, sure hogged 'em, I had, what, 8 of the 45? He had like 20 of them, and I hogged them... sure...
In other words, he's an asshole, and I'll only have to put up with his lame ass for one more year, then he can go to college and talk about his simple social encounters with people there (he's socialphobic, he says. More like people don't like to be around him because he's elitist, and he wants to make everyone else do things exactly like him, he's antisocial, really.). I mean, if he waves at somebody from school in their car and they wave back he feels the need to tell us. What utter bullshit, then he talks in his effeminite voice and forced speaking tone to everyone. Seriously, it sounds only very slightly deeper than a chick's voice, and he's basically forcing himself to look at people and smile, it's the fakest thing you ever saw, you see right through him, but nobody can ever tell him he looks fake because it'll hurt his self-esteem or whatever.
If you can't guess, I don't like him. Not one bit. In fact, I can rant about him almost indefinitely. Which is okay because you guys aren't just people I know from school that I feel the strange need to talk to on the net, you know, instead of at school.
Okay, I've thrown my crazy rant out, now you guys can go back to your business.

If the topic is about politics then it's not a journal.

install it then.
Options / Preferences / DSP/Effect / click on Nullsoft DSP V0.35 for winamp 2 / Then click plug in mode, Nullsoft Pitch/Tempo Control v0.2
after that, speed up linkin park.

unfortunately, i have a blog.
fortunately, i refuse to pour any retarded strife, angst, drama, etc. into it, and instead, i use it to report news related to TangoUniform, PSU, and the mobilization, then adding interesting things that may or may not have happened to me lately, with pictures when avaliable.

Upon further thought I would have to disagree with you tek. While annoying teenage girls can put up web journals, putting up one does not make you annoying, teenage, or female by definition.
I know quite a few teenage girls that do post online journals. None of them are posers or annoying. In fact some of them are the most unique free spirited girls I have ever met. I think all teenage girls have an apitude to put up web journals. By nature ones social life is important at that age. I don't see how any of this points to a flaw in the individual. As much as this sounds like a flaming liberal fucknut, I blame society.
TekDragon

You don't seem to understand. There are 2 seperate reasons to write a journal.
1. You write a journal and keep it private. It is your own private diary of thoughts and ideas that you write to help you sift through everything and cope.
2. You write a journal online. Your only purpose for doing this is to get attention.
That's it. Those are the facts. Deep down the ONLY reason for someone to post an online journal is because they want attention. If you didn't want attention, you'd make it private.
Informative blogs do NOT count in this. I don't even know how this got sidetracked into that. I'm not going to say that Hamma, a server administrator, is being an egoistical drama queen by posting important data logs on a blog.

No, i haven't. I was making the assumption based on the info i was given by other people and Hamma himself that the blog was for important data on PSU.
The only thing more pathetic than someone with an online journal is someone who reads online journals.
Sorry, i don't fall into either of those categories. So it is possible i'm mistaken about Hamma's blog.

Question: If you don't read online journals, how do you know what type of person writes them?
Cryptica
2004-06-16, 10:41 PM
Even though I dont consider myself quite so angry about it as Tek apparently is, I agree with him insomuch as saying that people who post online journals FREQUENTLY do it for attention. Not all the time, as I'm a firm believer of exceptions to every rule, however I think that Tek's point is valid. If you want a journal, that's great. I think they can be awesome ways to relieve stress, help cope, manage your life, etc. However, once a journal is posted online for all to read, it loses something. It's no longer a private, stress-relieving tool. It becomes something akin to wearing a sign around your neck saying "Look at me! I'm in angst! I need help! Tommy/Katie dumped me and I'm hurting! Give me your pity!"
Sorry if I sound harsh to all you who have them....but I think they're a waste of everyones time and webspace.

imo, need to differentiate between a journal and a web log.
journal connotations include whining, linkin park lyrics, drama, etc
web logs, "blogs," are, symantically speaking, records of facts/information.
obviously, the former is annoying and retarded, but i find the latter to be interesting, useful, and often entertaining.
some time ago i had considered all sorts of online journals, diaries, and blogs to be all stupid and whining and emo etc, but the web log was redeemed for me when nearly every embedded professional reporter used them as a convenient publishing medium during iraqi freedom - ap, reuters, ridder - all of them.
i never had anything useful to tell anybody, so i never made one; however, now i occasionally posess marginally useful or interesting information, and my psu blog is a convenient and effective medium for transmission thereof to the community.
