...or are you tired of happy endings in movies too?

The classic example would be Mission Impossible 2. Basically, Tom Cruise and an associate save Australia from complete eradication from a mega-virus while an evil corporate man was going to get rich off it all.

It happens again and again. The list of movies goes on and doesn't need to be mentioned here.

Now, what I want to see is something BAD.

Like, Tom Cruise DIES, the associate kills herself, and the virus not only kills off Australia even before the antidote can be administered, but spreads to Asia and South America, and ends up killing about 75% of the world.

Or in WarGames, the countries actually do start a thermonuclear war and kill off all of North America and Russia, while Europe turns into a nuclear battleground/wasteland as Central Europe gets overrun, NATO loses Western Europe, but it gets nuked to prevent any further expansion.

Or in Deep Impact, they fuck up somehow and the world is destroyed. GG.

Am I just morbid, or tired of the same thing?

i think the reason for happy endings is because they sell.

the majority of people would probably not pay to see a movie that by the end is pointless from no accomplishment whatsoever.

There was a movie made in the mid 80's or late 80's called Miracle Mile. I love that film. It has all your darkness and morbitity you want with it.

There's a ton of movies without happy endings out there. They definitely have a hard time reaching mainstream audiences, though.

Reservoir Dogs
Leon (The Professional)
Se7en

Those are a few off the top of my head. Unfortunately, there are lots of movies with happy endings that only got that way after studios flinched on the original endings after test audiences hated them. Army of Darkness (although I love the new ending) and 28 Days Later spring immediately to mind, but thanks to DVD we can actually see the original endings now.

I always thought disney movies (especcially the straight to TV ones) have the happiest /worst endings.

in one of them theres the abandoned hotel and some little girl checks it out the "spirits" are set free, the 2 rival ghosts are friends, they re open the hotel, and she gets like a million dollars.

watch the first 20 minutes of any disney movie and I can predict how it ends.

Identity had a nice ending that wasn't happy go lucky. I would also highly recommend that movie.

I don't want tragedy, I want the Apocalypse.

La Femme Nikita owned, and had a tragic ending.

Many ancient moons ago when I used to work for Disney, Pochhontas (however you spell it) was slated for a Disney first...a sad ending. She was supposed to die at the end. Somewhere along the line, the ending got changed and voila, instant suck ass movie.

Yeah, I'd like to see more sad endings or endings where the hero dies, or fail thier mission, etc. Gladiator was cool, he died and didn't get the girl to live happily ever after. Titanic is another that comes to mind...the ship sinks...oh wait a minute, the guy gets the girl, then dies. Seems like Hollywierd is afraid to have sad endings, yet if done right, it can be big money maker.

Edit: Just remembered a good movie where they lost the battle and everyone dies save one..The Last Samurai

Ever see the movie "U Turn" now that has an ending that made me want to kill myself.

But honestly,

What I hate more than a sappy ending is what I call the "American" ending. The movie must a) leave the conclusion up to you and b) be open to a sequal. No No No!!!! I want resolve tell me what you really were thinking when you made that movie Mr. (insert writer here)....

Ugh

What did you do for Disney? I liked The Last Samurai too.

Well you asked for it, here comes my bitching session... :flamemad:

Long story short (yeah right), started working for them as a "cast member" (thats what they call thier employees) doing the graveyard shift (maintenance) at Disneyland while attending class during the day. Went from part time to full time, to trainer to lead (foreman). I decided once graduated or close to it, I'd move into management. I did numerous interships and even took time out of my vacation in Orlando to get an overview of thier operations. Well Disneyland decided to revamp management...and were ADDING management positions. I was fairly close to graduation. I figured it a lock because I applied for a position within the department I was in. Hell, none of the canidates had a degree and none of them were even close to graduating. Plus none of them even had done an internship anywhere in the company or showed much devotion to the company. Well this is where it gets ugly...

I was called in the office one day and was told "you are over qualified and should seek another position outside the department". Seems plausble, except for a few problems:

1) Even if you meet all the qualifications, its hell to transfer. Its actually easier to quit the company for a year and then re-apply in a different area.

2) The goal of the new management jobs were to hire first within the department before hiring outside (if that was legal or not, I don't know).

3) Even if they opened the position outside the department, previous management exp. was required...see a problem here?

4) It was interesting to note that every flippin time I'd apply for a position outside the department, my application would get returned due to a) passed deadline (manager would sit on it) b) manager forgot to sign it...then passed deadline c) manager forgot to get HR approval first..and pass deadline.

This was pathetic. Almost the entire department knew that I got royally screwed. Couldn't even walk by half of them without someone saying "hey, there's a knife in your back". Whats even worse is, other people who were accepted and were going through the management program would come up to me asking what I did on a certain project in the program...they had assumed that I had already been through it. They were rather surprised to find out that I had not been selected, some down right shocked. Except the ones that played racquetball with managers on thier day off. Add insult to injury, they made another trainer the Head Trainer. The very schmuck I trained who was not even good enough to hold my sack (and had the gaul to ask me questions when he ran into training problems). I was not asked if I wanted the job, nor was I informed that the position was open (it was filled before I had a chance to inquire).

Well, I fled the company and all the time I spent doing the internships was for nought. I did internships at Bank of America, Coca-Cola Enterprise's, did some consultant work for smaller companies and worked as a temp to find the in to other companies. Ended up as a Pricing Analyst at Farmers Insurance Group by almost pure accident.

I'm not bitter at the company, If I had a job offer from them, I would still probally consider it (hey, it was a fun company to work for). But, I'm also very happy here at Farmers. For me to leave, Disney would have to offer double what I make now...and that would smack me right into the six figures...and since Disney has the reputation for paying lower (a lot lower...ex. My salary is higer than their Department Managers salary...and I was applying for a position below that), chances are its not going to happen. I really don't know all the reasons for the Bull Shit when I was there, my only guess is some of the managers in the dept felt threatend. Found out only a few had a college degree and none of those was above an Associates. Plus, I had the reputation for doing more with less...and that could have been contributing factor. Who knows!?

Hope this doesn't derail the thread.

Well, how's that for a good old fashioned un-happy ending! Sorry that happened, Red... the only ass raping that should be done around here shouldn't be at the hands of Disney, it should be at the hands of our very own SDM.
