i finally figured it out. Most of the time, when i talk to my little group of nerd friends about upcomming games, they know all of the stuff. Now however, nobody knows about PS. I now have figured out why though. All of the good data and media is posted on pay sites like IGN and gamespot. Nobody pays for this crap, so nobody knows about this awsome upcomming game. This should stop so that PS gets the biggest user base popular.

Im pretty sure once it comes out the testamonials will be so amazingly positive and far reaching that every gamer will be itching for a taste of PS goodness.

I would say, it's "unpopular"(although I think it's more popular than you think) because it has been pushed back so much, now. People get over than initial excitement when a game is pushed back a year from when it was supposed to be released. When a definitive release date is announced, it will get alot more crowded around here. The fact that the release is coinciding with Star Wars Galaxies won't help though.

hmm, give the game 6 mounths (at the most) and see how big it gets. thats all i can think of, but if this game is as good as i emagine it to be............drool.............this game is gonna be big

A lot of people genuenly don't know about it. The problem is that it's not geting enough exposier on major gameing sites such as gamespy. Yes, they did previes, but they dont seem to get that much attention.
Don't worry, it will spread like wildfire once it is released.

It's under the shadow of EQ2 and SWG. PSU is a great site with alot of info.

Eeehhh...your quite a bit off there, mate.
First of all, lots of people use and pay for gamespot and ign. Secondly, there is planetside info on many different non-pay sites. And third, the reason PS doesnt have droves of fans right now is more complicated than your explination.
You must realize that the devs intentionaly developed this game in a 'black box' which means that until recently, they didnt release ANY or VERY VERY LITTLE info. Ask anyone that has been following this game for over 8 months, and they will tell you that the info we have recieved between October and now is 1000% more than we had from the time this game was first announced 2 years ago. Also, Planetside isnt an established product. This isnt a quake sequal that rides the popularity of the last few incarnations, this is a brand new game in a genre that is still in its infancy. How much did you hear about Halflife or Unreal before they were released?
Anyhow, the community has grown 10 fold in the last couple months alone, and as we get closer to release it will only get bigger, and bigger.....and bigger....

i agree with TeamR, i think we might be seeing it get exposed more in the next few months (duh), last time i went to gamestop at my mall, the first thing u saw when u walked in or even passed by was a planetside cardboard standup of the cover of the PS box

i forget how i got interested in PS, all i know is that once i saw it i wanted it bad, and if this game ends up not being good, which is like 1 in 1000000000000000000 that thats gonna happen, i think i might go into deep depression and end up being a alchoholic crack addict and die by age 30, or not ;)

I learned about it from Game Informer. A magazine, that is OK. Three warring factions, set in future, many roles to play, could be a pilot, awesome guns, so I did a googlem search, and I ended up here. :)

I think people havent been interested cause its taken so long to get out.. i remember back in the day when i heard about PS i was all hyped up and ready to buy it...then the dates got pushed back so much that i gave up..till it reappeared suddenly with release dates attached... then i got back into it..and now i have 3 chars planned to the tee..
Same thing happened with a game called Horizons...anyone heard of it? yea well...it'll put EQ 1 +2, Asherons call, DAoC, and any other MMORPGs in the dirt if and when it ever comes out. But i lost interest in it cause the release dates keep getting pushed back

i still believe that this game would have been more popular by now if the media would have been free. I don't think that it will be very popular at all. I think that the user base wont be any more than EQ (if that, if even a 4th of that)
whatever, if there are only enough people to fill 1 server, then i'll be happy.

Planetside, or any game for that matter, would be extremely lucky to have a user base as big as EQs. Everquest is near 4 years old, and still has in the neighborhood of 200,000 active subscribers, making it one of the most popular games in video gaming history. If planetside can pull half that, it will be a success.

I re-found (as I forgot about it) out about Planetside though the gamespot preview.
I was not a subscriber at the time.
I myself don't mind if PS isn't the next CS. Less people = less 13 year old kids :p
As long as there is enough to keep the game and support team afloat i'm cool. :)

Damn straight Dio. but we all know that once it comes out, we will have more 13 year olds than we can control.

Yeah, although it'll probably do really good. It's alot more accessible thatn a MMORPG as more people generally play FPSes
Heh, well i'm hoping the monthly fee will help keep some if not most of the CS kiddy group out. :)

Yeh, monthly fees scares idiots for some reason.
Kyonye
2003-02-04, 10:43 PM
monthly fee's will not be a problem. it really isn't that much anyway. people who are scared about the fee's are just cheap people who don't think they should spend money to have fun.

Say what you will, but BF1942 wasn't as popular as PS is now, and look at it now. That was a sleeper release if I've ever seen one.

Yep, it's marketing. Same reason (only to a greater degree) World of Warcraft isn't popular. You'd figure a game being made by one of the best developers on the planet would attrack attention, but no, Blizzard hasn't been advertising WoW nor have they been giving any information about it worth advertising.

With the new PR guy (Sporkfire?) or whatever they are calling him I think you might start seeing more info being released. The 2 page add in the latest Computer Gaming World was very nice and should help get the word out.
EQ2 does not thrill me (2+ year EQ1 vetern) and SWG I'm not going to play (oh look.. the 999th version of Luke.. how original), now if I could be a Wookie Jedi and kill Ewoks and Gungons I might consider checking it out. :bouncy:
