View Full Version : What about a continent with no Bases?

I just had a thought that maybe a continent without a base would be an interesting idea. Make it one huge battlefield, and maybe leave some towers in.
It wouldnt need to be extraordinarily large, but about as big as a Battle Island would work methinks.
As for benefit? Well that could be tied into CC, like all crappy benefit ideas (nothing in CC has a benefit worth dealing with...cept maybe gates, but we should have those anyway). Maybe the benefit could be more strategic and a warp gate in the middle send you to any other wapr gate you want (probably not any sancs though  )
Discuss.

Actually that'd be cool. Not sure why, but it would be.

Without bases you lack 3 things. The first is a means to control that warpgate. The second is vehicles to traverse the continent and finally any way of holding territory.
I think it'd be kinda boring personally :)

You don't need bases for any of that...Towers could be modded to do all of that...
Or even make it no vehicles aside from ones you bring.

Would you get XP for capping those towers? Because without that, just like CC, few people would go. And if towers take on the properties of bases anyway (adding vehicle terminals, medical terminals, cert terminals), then combat would be exactly the same zerg rush as it is now, just with smaller, exposed facilities.
It's an interesting idea, but you have to specify the tangible player rewards or the "what's in it for me" players won't go. Remember that most players couldn't give crap about strategic concerns and it would be difficult for the devs to commit resources to new islands that depend upon a narrower demographic of players to fill.
So having said that, what do you think would be the personal benefits to players to get them to go?

Kill XP is better than cap XP unless yer the SL...
Maybe the conquest of the continent should give a big reward, make the entire thing one big cap.
And I think vehicles should be hard to get...aka not being spawned there. Or if they are, non Tech Plant vehicles only...

I just dont find an open exposed continent where i'm free game to every vehicle out there that appealing, lets face it terrain cover in this game sucks and camo is non existant especialy for us NC guys who've reached the rank of big bird. Not that the other empires are much better.

Nobody said it has to be open and exposed...it could literally be a tropical version of Ceryshan with Hossin style vegetation...
Maybe even more treed in than that...
Think Jurrasic Park...imagine fighting on that island...:)

Can't we have bases on the island? :(

Would one base be enough?

I just dont find tower battles all that much fun, and i dont particularly see the need to divide the populations further.

I'm just saying, why can't you have a jurassic park style continent... with bases? :D

Yall are thinking too close minded, too much, 'why no bases', 'wny no vehicles', 'what about XP'. Correct me if I'm wrong Sobekeus, but I think he's referring to an arena idea. Yes I know no one would go because of selfishness, but it'd be fun just to have a couple platoons going head to head to see who's better.

It's not a case of being closed minded, it's just I don't see a continent with just a warpgate and towers as making much sense. Now if it was a really large base with the super warpgate in it surrounded by towers and the odd normal warpgate, now that sounds both fun and makes more sense.

Well the idea is sort of an infantry arena idea. Think PS-Tribes/Halo.
Towers dont have to be fortresses (as if bases are  ). What would be interesting is if the devs used this continent as a test bed for trenches, enhanced bunkers, hell even new towers.
If people insist on having vehicles, let air towers spawn them on the roof. Watch towers can be modded to have a garage area for non Tech Plant vehicles to be spawned at.
But make it hell, no frickin roads, no bridges (maybe shallows to compensate). Heck make the water parts like the swampy sections in Hossin.
It doesnt have to be big, in fact it could easily be smaller than TR sanc. Now I will admit the Battle Islands are almost what Im asking for, but I honestly dont see why we need a base everywhere.
For the people who say they need a reason to fight there, well only CEP is an issue with this, so give a cont cap bonus like I said before.
Another issue is populations, I imagine those can be similar to Battle Islands too...

But what would you cap? :)
It's not that I'd like to see vehicles, quite frankly they'd be useless in such a terrain anyway, it's just I think you need something more than just a tower to fight over.
With the exception of towers, infantry fight near bases, or near towers near bases. They rarely fight in the spaces between bases. However if you just had two small-ish bases at either end of the island (I mean they could be just the bare bones of a base, no interlink benefit etc just something between a base and a tower) then you immediately have 2 key objectives, defend the base you currently own and attack the base that you don't. I don't think towers hold enough importance to fill that role.
I'm all for the idea of infantry on infantry battle through dense terrain, but I think you need to put an objective at the end of it.

How 'bout a BUNCH of towers, not so widespread as ones currently on the contenients, but withing visual range of eachother (many withing turret range). Also with a 'front line' style capture system, where the whole map view is hued with the empire's color that controls towers which they are pushing from. Kinda hard to explain, but the first to color the whole contenient wins, (meaning all the towers and front line hues are one color).

Well, towers and their possible spinoffs, could very well give us urban combat...
Command Tower could a trumped up version of the Watch Tower and be the 'SOI manager' and proverbial 'base'.
Watch Tower could be redesigned to have windows.
Gun Tower should have double the firepower (one on each corner) and should have more bunker like walkways rather than open like now (no hotdropping on this baby).
Air Towers should be nonexistant (this is vehicle hell afterall).
Bunkers should be sunken Gun Towers (just make the door access underground or even from another tower) so that the top bunkered floor would be at ground level.
There should also be various abandoned towers that cant be hacked, but do have neutral terms that a hacker can utilize.
And there should be towers with nothing in them at all, they are just simply positions to take advantage of (perfect for sniping...or killing snipers).
If I went overboard...it happens...

Yes, exactly. I know I've seen that pic before, just didn't remember where.
