Games Workshop dumps Warhammer Online

Rob Fahey 16:26 21/06/2004
Massively multiplayer project bites the dust as Games Workshop cancels work

British tabletop gaming firm Games Workshop has cancelled work on Warhammer Online, the massively multiplayer game which was being developed by Climax based on its best-known role-playing property.

In a terse statement issued to the financial markets today, Games Workshop said that "this decision was taken following a full review of the progress, costs to date and future costs of the project."

The game was being created as a co-development between Games Workshop and Climax, and both firms have apparently agreed to the termination of the project. It was due to be published worldwide by Sega.

It's not clear what factors caused the development of the title - which was significantly advanced - to be halted, although competition in the massively multiplayer market is certainly tougher now than it was two years ago when the project was started.

Several other Warhammer licensed projects have been given the go-ahead by Games Workshop over the past few years - including online FPS title Fire Warrior, which was developed by Kuju and released last Christmas, and a strategy title, Dawn of War, which is being created by Relic for release later this year.

From the warhamemr website.....

It is with a great deal of sadness that I have to inform the community that we have decided to discontinue the development of Warhammer Online and will be closing down this website with immediate effect.

This has been a difficult and painful decision but it was taken following a following a full review of the progress of the game, costs to date and future costs of the project. As a result both Games Workshop and Climax Development Limited, the computer games developer, have agreed to terminate the development project.

I would like to say a personal thanks to all of the people who have followed our development over the last few years, your constant support and enthusiasm has meant a great deal to us.

I wasnt interested in it, still, sucks for the all the fans of it.

My question is why would you stop development when it (seemed) so close to completion?

Would of never worked out commercially.

I wish half the developers of MMORPG's realized their game's lack of potential before release. Would of prevented the flooding of the market with such peices of shit as Asherons Call 2, Lineage 2, Shadowbane, FFXI, and others.

Shadowbane was a miserable failure due to:

1. Being released in the midst of giants.
2. Having an atrocious interface (point click move).

The premise was good. But then, all premises are good.

FFXI is yet another uninspired level based system. Takes a 7 year old exactly 10 minutes to think up a level based system, and that's what they went for.

and lineage 2 was good also.

There is only one reason to play Lineage 2. It's not for the storyline. It has none. It's not for the gameplay, it sucks. It's not for the leveling system, that's uninspired.

Why would you play it?

Simple.

So you can look up the female elf and female human mini skirts.

Guaranteed the developers of Lineage 2 spent exactly 2 days planning their leveling/gameplay system and spent the next few months perfecting the way the charachters bend over when they run.

They were from the Czech Republic. And they did speak English.. just not very well. Moaning is multi-lingual anyway. So bite me.

We were talking about how many shitty MMORPG's have been released.

I'd expect more to bite the dust. Its well known that the market is kind of saturated with online games, hence there is going to be some spectacular flops...and some are just going to drop out before they become the next flop. If I recollect correctly, the Sim's Online game has around 80,000 subscribers...they were prepared, invested and expecting somewhere in the nieghborhood of half a million. Also, my understanding is even Final Fanatasy did not hit thier numbers...and I would suspect they would lose some when Everquest II comes out. I'm going to bet that eventually there will be just a few major companies that do online games with smaller companies partnering with them to release thier online games (provided the larger company thinks its worth it). Sort of like what we see now in the game console market.

Seriously though, this one looked really good, better than any others i had seen. Pitty. Theres nothing wrong with releasing shitty games - i'd rather have 10 good games and 100 shitty games released, than 10 good games and nothing else. The reviews will let me know what is worth buying.

Oh well, guess I should consider WoW now.

Dammit! Im so pissed off about this. I wanted to play as an Orc soo bad and start cutting up some high elves and dark elves.

If your huge warhammer fans then you should enjoy playing the classic version and leave it at that.

You couldn't have been an orc. They only allowed netrual species. Humans, Orges, Elves, Dwarves only.

Yeh it was gonna be a fantasy game, not for 40K. I talked to one of the devs at Games Day Baltimore opnly a couple weeks ago for over 2 hours. It was quite up there in stages of completion. They had and alpha type thing you could walk around in and explore part of the world, plus tons of animations. They had alot of the structure and basis for the world all planned and partially implemented. Its kinda disapointing as i was really psyched about this, and now they cancelled it.

Makes me sad.
