Searching through my library of old CD's for starcraft, I happened upon an a copy of the original doom. My curiosity compelled me to pop in doom. I had never player it before. If my memory servers me correct it was too scary for me when I first got it. (I was probably about 5 at the time.) After playing for a little while, a strange thing happened. I found that I was really enjoying the game. I was expecting some out dated piece of junk. Sure the graphics, and AI were awful, but the core game was better then most modern shooters. I can see why this game is such a classic. The fact that this game is still really fun about 10 years later says something. If you haven't played doom for any reason, please do. It is a piece of video game history you don't want to miss.
Download doom here (http://compactiongames.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http://www.pcgameworld.com/details.php/get/5001).

First game I ever saw (and played) on a network, over at a friend's house with two computers hooked up. It was absolute crack, although I can't imagine it would still hold the same appeal to me now. At the time just seeing the other soldier run across the screen and realizing it was your friend was astounding. Getting the BFG ruled all, and it was even fun when the other guy had the BFG and you were trying to figure out ways to get him to waste shots.
I'm always thinking about loading Rise of the Triad back onto my machine and trying to network that again, I always thought that was the best of the 'old school' network games. I think that those deathmatches would still hold up.

Just played. Quake 1 was 1337er. When this game was around for Win 95, I was playing JK. Not impressed.

So young. So very, very young. Quake 1 was years after Doom. Hell, Quake 1 was years after Duke. Doom was the game that made people realize that FPS network gaming was possible, and fun. ROTT made people realize it could be fast as hell. Quake made people realize it could be fast, smooth and pretty.
Jedi Knight was years after Dark Forces, which was years after Doom. You're comparing Windows XP to Windows 95. Sure, there's lots of similarities but there's also a whole lot of changes with technology being the biggest one.
Edit: Continuing my ROTT love, why has no other game included Drunk Missiles since ROTT? That's got to be my favorite FPS gun ever. God mode, Dog mode and Shrooms mode are also the greatest set of powerups ever.
Ludicrous Gibs!

I just finished episode 1 of doom. Aparently I have the shareware version that only has the first episode. The person who tracks down the 2nd and 3rd episodes gets a cookie and ePenis+2.
The oldest shooter i have played seriously, thus far, is Q3A, which, by my estimates, can run on a Ti86.

I have Doom, and a cool program called "Doomsday Kickstart" with several add-ons allowing 3D models, special effects, cleaned up sprites, and even a feature rarely included in TODAY'S games: As you keep shooting a monster, esp. a boss, the textures on the model get bloodier and bloodier instead of looking new, then falling to the ground with a massive hole in their chest.

12 episodes? what the fuck are you talking about? doom1? there were 32 levels in doom 2, 2 of them secret, one was the boss level in Wolfenstine, rather, final boss, and the other im not sure, but i remember killing commander Keen to beat the level. now, i played what i belive was Ultimate Doom, that was was very good, exelent level design.
but, i must agree with the original poster, i played doom back then, fuck, i had nightmares about doom, jesus, they were BAD nightmares too, horrid, and then i played doom when i was older, damn was it good, i remember playing doom over a lan, hell, i think the best level in all of doom Coop is Level 15, with that fuckin cyberdemon, damn, i remember getting chills when id see him unexpected, and hed fire off those 3 missile bursts at me, and id dodge.... :o face:
I'm talking about the version that you can download from that link it has 12 episodes to play.
