It's finally time to build the fiance her PC. I'll be taking the 256mb Radeon 9800 Pro out of my PC (which is a screaming gaming god) and replace it with some version of the Radeon X800, and giving her the 9800.

I haven't been able to follow the tech specs as much as i'd like, so im hoping somoene here who SERIOUSLY knows about this shit can clue me in on what the verdict has been on the various X800 versions.

As for the rest of the PC, here you go:

Mobo: Asus P4C800-E Deluxe (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-131-464&depa=1)
Processor: Pentium 4 2.8 GHz 800MHz FSB 1mb L2 Cache w/ Hyperthreading (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-116-170&depa=1)
Memory: OCZ 1gig (512x2) dual channel enhanced latency DDR PC3200 (2-3-2-6) (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-146-883&depa=1)
Sound: Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS PCI (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=29-102-162&depa=1)
HardDrive: Seagate 120GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=22-148-017&depa=1)
DiskDrives: Lite-On White 52X32X52X16 Combo Drive (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=27-106-931&depa=1) & Lite-On White 8X DVD+/-RW Drive (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=27-106-934&depa=1)

Feel free to critique, but only offer suggestions if you know what your talking about. No fanboyism, please.

Sorry I can't help ya... I don't know anything about it technologically, Rob didn't get into that stuff... he just said it was good when he was helping put my new system together...

Well, That looks like a good comp. Looks like it will play games well with a gig of ram aswell as the 2.8ghz pcr. As for the video card, I don't think it will pretty mutch matter unless you buy the pro version (more expensive) which lets you watch tv on your moniter :/ (not worth it to me)

Well basicaly you ave two verison of the X800, the pro and the XT, with 14 and 16 rendering pipelines respectivly. the pro has clocks of something like 475core and 1ghz mem. the XT is 520ish core and 1.3ghzish i think mem. The XT also has a rage theater chip installed, so you can watch TV with it.

they Cost $400 and $500. But the Pro is what you should get for one reason only, and that ATi forgot that people as very big penney pintcher and they mad the Two chips identical ecxept for a few copper tabs on the Pro version, when you draw a silver conductive pen between two of them you enable the extra pipelines turning it into a slower clocked XT, but the card easily OCes to that poin in most every case(mod instructions found here (http://www.pcunleash.com/bbs/zboard.php?id=MyItemReview&page=1&sn1=&divpage=1&sn=off&ss=on&sc=on&select_arrange=headnum&desc=asc&no=26) )

that what i'm gona do, i have the money right now, but my mom requires that i save half(good idea) so i need a few more paychecks.

well hes not going to do any better than an 2.8 or greater without moving to much expensive AMD64 939 so can it. the regular athlon line just isn't that great unless you go mid range with the 2500+ becasue that will bea teh 2.4 unless you OC

The older 754 AMD 64's are actually still the best performance/price setups currently. Newegg last wk had a AMD64 2800 with an Abit KV8 for $200.

Can't argue the, buying something thats end of life and being replaced thing either because so is socket 478. Plus there are still plenty of faster 754 chips to upgrade to over the next year or so to still keep the system alive until you competely replace the mb, by then maybe 939's won't be so expensive.

well this only thing i have against 754 is that it does not dual channel. I know the memory controler keeps up quite well, but memory bandwidth means more and more, and the current CPU's (inc tha reg. Athlons) beat it in that

Rbstr, have you heard about the new Alienware dual video card system? It sounds pretty amazing, and I'm thinking of getting it, although it's a touch expensive. Thoughts?

don't bother, AW sucks, way to expensive. even if it boost performance by 2x its not gona matter as next gen cards will be going 200 frames already. 400 frames doens't apear any better.
