View Full Version : Air Towers

Dave really didnt mention what purpose they serve, we know they have "landing pads" but, I ask - what is the point of such a landing pad if you can land anywhere? What possible other task does the air tower have, does it repair your craft? Its a pretty good bet you cannot spawn aircraft there..
What is everyone's thoughts? And SmokeJumpers thoughts if you happen to stumble upon this thread. :D

Maybe it's in just to make those air jocks happy that they can try for a 3 point landing. Repair of vehicle would be NICE!!

I would guess that they repair/resupply aircraft. It is also just a safe place to put your aircraft, less likely to be jacked/destoyed.
And no they can't spawn vehicles, rogue13 says so (http://boards.station.sony.com/ubb/planetside/Forum2/HTML/002186.html).

Well, he said the air towers has a AA gun right? The tower has spawn tubes and the pad i'd guess repairs and restocks your reaver/mosquito.
Could be nice for saving the time of finding a base to land on.... help your squad kill a tank.. fly back to the airtower thats closer than the base and get back again to help your squad.

Where does he say they have AA guns?

I did not see any referene to AA guns.
Since no Towers have equip terminals (just lockers), it does not make sense that 1 can resupply/repair aircraft. It would not be 'fair' in that vehicles and infantry would be shafted but not pilots.
Maybe SJ did not have all the facts - he did waiver on the issue of Towers having Med terminals.

One guess would be a staging area if the towers are remote enough to be inbetween certain bases.. You take the tower on the border with the enemy base you're trying to take, and that's where your Reavers group up before flying in.. That or where a galaxy could land pick up reinforcements and bring them to the battle.
Of course the best thing I could see is an enemy force seiging the tower while your galaxy pilot gets his men out via the landing pads 'ala "fall of saigon" :D

Well they have to have some use, I would guess repair/resupply. Where is a dev when you need one?!? :D

Yes that would be cool. :cool2:

My net is kinda fucked atm (only PSU and a few other sites show up at all) but i remember something about guns on the air tower where the description of the towers was given...
you know 3 story gun tower, 5 story high lookout tower and the air tower
i'm not 100% on the gun on the air tower, could have misread but i can't find the discriptions of the various towers atm.. annyone know where it is and could cut n paste them?

the Air tower landing is probably a repair bay type thing. also you are less likely to be hit by ground units considering they can't fire through walls. remember i'm not including fire from air units.

Yea I am hoping it serves some kind of repair/resupply purpose, if not I do not see a use for it

There is no 'AA gun'. They've only talked about 2 types of turrets, Spitfires (deployable turrets) and Wall Turrets (permanent, mounted turrets). The wall turrets are not automated unless you control a special facility on that continent, and even then they will only fire at vehicles unless you have motion sensors down. Whether they fire at aircraft as well as ground vehicles is to be seen, but I would venture to guess they would. If not then you could always get in it and fire it yourself. I doubt they'd be useless against aircraft.
There are no guns on the air towers. Or at least if there are then they haven't said anything about it, but I doubt it. The gun towers themselves only have 2 guns by the looks of it from this (http://www.planetside-universe.com/media/viewer.php?img_id=336) screenshot.
Even if it doesn't repair/resupply the vehicle, you could still use it for cover and manual repair/resupply (if perhaps you stored vehicle ammo in your locker, since they don't appear to have equipment terminals). If they did repair/resupply then they'd be a whole lot more useful though.

Air resupplies are gonna be crucial. Our outfits will probably have some awsome air crews that love to scout around and kill random intruders....but what good will they be if they have to fly half way to Mars to get rearmed? This "landing pad" is much more important than a place to land and we will soon learn just how important they will become...
hi I'm that iV guy..

Resupply souns right, unless you can resupply at any base. I was assuming that because Reavers and Mosquitos can only be spawned at Tech Centers that they can only resupply there. However, if you can at air towers they will be great for anyone who's a good enough pilot to live through some battles.

Well if the DEVs allow for cargo boxes to be loaded up on galaxies (please oh please) I'd glady take orders and hot drop supplies down to your supplyless towers for you, then you can cram what you don't need into a locker for later =P
Yeah dropping supplies would be damn cool! :)

Yeah i think that supplying those air towers would be a really good strat if your planning any offensives in the region. I know real life militaries have scattered air bases all over hte place to rearm and refuel. If your damaged you'd be able to find a close place to set down and fix up and the turn around time for aircraft sortie's will be very important to your ground forces in the thick of the action.

Supply drops would be pretty sweet. But the closest we'll probably see to that is dropping a lightning or buggy with a fully loaded trunk. I really don't see how else it would be possible, seeing as how you have to drive the vehicle to the cargo bay I don't see how you'd be able to drive a box full of ammo. Oooh! Supply trucks! Hehe, that could add an interesting element to the gameplay, trucks that you could load full of ammo/supplies that can be carried in a galaxy (otherwise an AMS would be better). But then again for all we know the trunks could be huge and would totally negate the need for a seperate vehicle for supplies.

Read this (http://planetside.station.sony.com/team_comments.jsp), of special interest is point number 5.
SmokeJumper says that you will be able to get all 'standard' vehicles without a tech plant. I imagine that the skeeter comes under this category, and maybe the reaver. Even then if you control just one tech plant then all the bases on the continent can spawn any vehicle (except galaxies).

You can drop supplies from a Galaxy.
Get someone to load up a buggy with all the guns and ammo anyone might need, get in it, dock it to the Galaxy and drop it over friendly units.
Yeah, Galaxy resupply runs. Its possible.

I'm guessing buggies won't have the biggest trunks around.
An ANT may or may not have a trunk at all...
Too bad a deliverer won't fit. I'll wager the APC's have some of the larger trunks.
Hell, the Galaxy it self may have the largest trunk in the game (it or the sunderer). Just land it on the air pad, and let everyone help themselves.
I was under the impression that there were med terminals in towers... so auto-repairing vehicles doesn't sound so far fetched.

Maybe they have a radar of some sort on them. Kind of like a watch tower i guess. Just an idea...
oh btw, first post :)

Well, I didn't remember reading the Tech Center part of that letter. I was remembering from december when someone (I am not counting people that wouldn't know, looking for source) said that flying vehicles would only be available at Tech Centers.
Thx for pointing that out.
