WASHINGTON (AFP) - Microsoft said it was revamping its Internet search operation and preparing to launch its own search engine later this year to compete directly with Google and Yahoo.

The immediate change will be a "cleaner look" for its MSN Search page that separates paid and unpaid search results and provides direct links to Microsoft's encyclopedia service.

This is the first step in a 100-million-dollar upgrade of the program, which will include a new Microsoft-owned search engine later this year.

Up to now, industry analysts say, Microsoft's search uses the underlying engine developed by Yahoo and its Overture service.

Microsoft said it released a test version of its upcoming algorithmic search engine "to gather feedback from webmasters and search enthusiasts."

This will be launched, along with "a range of other search services," within the year.

"With this significant upgrade to MSN Search, we are delighted to now offer what we believe is the best search service available for the 350 million MSN customers," said Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president of the MSN division.

"Among the many improvements, we're particularly excited to increase the relevancy of many search query results by up to 45 percent. This massive investment kicks off a wave of innovation from MSN that will move search beyond its current, limited offering to delivering the next-generation search experience."

The move puts the world's largest software company in direct competition with search leader Google, which is in the process of launching a stock offering, and Yahoo, which has moved away from using Google for its underlying search technology.

Based on the Google model, searching has become a profitable enterprise on the Internet by targeting advertising to surfers based on the keywords they use for the search, often in the form of "sponsored" or paid listings.

Thus, users searching for sporting goods might get, in addition to the standard search results, paid listings for sporting goods sellers.

We'll see how it works. Personally, i love Yahoo and hate google. Yahoo searches make sence. They organize things well. If you look up a company name, they give you that companie's official website as their first listing. In google, you might have to go through 3 pages worth of forum talk before you find the official site.

If Microsoft can do intellegent searches like Yahoo, and give me my Reuters, AP, and Wall Street Journal news, AND give me the weather in my town - all in one page - ill be happy.

Yahoo dropped it's partnership with Google earlier this year. They have a new engine built off the Inktomi technology.

On a related note. Google news beta is by far the best I've seen.

http://news.google.com/

It gives you time since release, who reported it, and links to multiple sources for each headline. They did an outstanding job IMO.

The news site is ok. My Yahoo, however, let's you select which news you want and organize it the way you want.

I don't have to put up with all the clutter and silly crap on Google's page. I get the top 3 Reuters headlines, top 3 AP headlines, top 3 economic headlines, and nothing else.

Nice, neat, clean, and useful.

No offence to anyone who swears by Google's news - buy just looking at the site for 3 seconds gave me a headache it was so poorly put together.

Haha clutter on google? Guess only the morons have made Google the most popular search engine. Only the elite are smart enough to use something else.

I agree with SDM: Google's News page is excellent. And as far as Yahoo and MS's upcoming search engine, both will probably remain second to Google for a while longer. The fact that MS will be putting ads in its search engine will be a minus, unless the ads are simple and out of the way like Google's.

Edit: Yahoo's search engine is still good, especially if you have the Yahoo search toolbar so you can bypass the yucky main page.

I don't see how that's considered clutter. At the top you can do ANYTHING - weather, addresses, directions, phone numbers, ANYTHING.

Below that is handy category searches. Yahoo gives you the option of limiting your searches to within certain categories and sub categories - an EXTREMELY useful tool.

Then, on the right, you have 4-5 top headlines.

How can that be considered clutter? It's all organized and it's all useful.

Meanwhile, you can get a free Yahoo account and make a completely customizable homepage. Put your headlines, calendar, or 500 other cool options ANYWHERE you want them.
