INVERNESS, FL (AP) -- A 5-year-old boy impersonating Spider-Man crashed into a large statue of an elephant at his grandmother's home, impaling himself on a tusk.
Hunter Helton was recovering Friday at home from the wound to his left hip. He was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital on Thursday after emergency workers became concerned the ivory tusk might have hit a bone or an artery.
Hunter had seen Spider-Man 2 on its opening day Wednesday and was playing at his grandmother's home, imitating some of the super hero's moves.
But as he jumped around the den with his siblings and a cousin, the boy lost his balance and fell into a filing cabinet and then hit the heavy mahogany elephant his grandmother had bought in Africa. Half the elephant's large ivory tusk broke off and got stuck in his body.
"It was horrifying," said Nikki Mitchell, Hunter's mother.
At the hospital, x-rays showed the tusk hadn't punctured anything serious. A surgeon was able to remove the object without surgery, instead cleaning the area and stitching it closed. Doctors told Mitchell that Hunter was lucky the injuries weren't more serious.
Mitchell said she was proud of her son keeping his composure during the ordeal. He'll be rewarded with a Spider-Man 2 video game.
"That was his motivation through it all," Mitchell said. "I'm like, whatever it takes.
"He was really brave," she said. "We're lucky it was a happy ending."
Triggar, you're right. The mother is dumb.

I have a mixed opinion on this, i really don't support rewarding people for stupidity, however we can't really know how he reacted afterwards. If he was calm, allowed the doctors to do there job with a minimum of fuss (I had to have 4-5 guys hold me down to get my shots so I could go to school) and "took it like a man", for lack of a better expression, I could see him deserving some sort of reward for it. He learned his lesson about doing stupid shit when he was stabbed, some positive reinforcement for responding correctly isn't neccessarilly bad.
edit: Anyway, he's five years old, thats the age where you learn not to do stupid shit, you can't exactly rail on the parents or the movie for his actions because in the end he is probably better of for having them happen to him anyway. I seriously doubt he's going to impale himself for a video game again, but I bet he'd keep his cool better next time if thats what got the game for him.
edit: i never said that infernus, read closer, all i said was that it's a learning experience

Infernus, it was a stupid thing to do, you can't possibly defend that, that doesn't make him stupid, that makes him 5, theres a reason why little kids are tough, it's like on the job training for life.

WTF was a 5 yo doing seeing a movie that is:
MPAA Rating: PG-13 for stylized action violence.
I have to go see the movie a second time because all the little fuckers who needed booster seats to see the god damn film wouldn't shut the fuck up so I could hear it.

Erm... Spider-Man, an action superhero, theres cartoons about him... most parent's won't care about the rating because... its spiderman, the guy that their kids watch every saturday morning...
Dude. SM2 is totally non-gory. I dont think theres even a drop of blood in the entire flick.

Cut the kid some slack. Hes five, and just like any other 5 year old boy who saw the movie, he thinks that spiderman is the greatest thing on earth. Im willing to bet tons of other kids did the exact same thing. He was just at the wrong place at the wrong time.
I wasnt like he tied himself to something and jumped off a building, he was just hopping around just like any other sugar infused kid, and ran into a wall. Shit, I did my fair share of wall-running-into when I was a kid >_>
On a similar note," Tampa General Hospital "
WTF. Why is tampa like the center of america lately?

The kid was 5 and got impaled in the hip. Do you know how much that would suck for someone that age? I think the mom was right in giving him a little get well present.

If he were to have gotten impaled in the stomache and died, do you think he would have gotten that spiderman 2 game? No. Thus, he shouldn't get it because he got impaled in the hip.

I see no reason for why you people are insulting the mother or the kid. Obviously each of you never got hurt as a kid. You never pretended you were an action hero (for me it was Star Wars) or something like that. You never ran around the house, or jumped off of furniture or something like that. I'm glad that everyone here never had an accident.
As for the mother - her kid had a big accident and she gave him a present for dealing with the pain. I broke my arm as a kid and after getting it put into a cast my mother bought me a little present. The same thing after I had surgery. She gave him a game for being brave. What's the big fucking deal about that?

Wtf? I fell down some bleachers and split my forehead open. I cut my finger open with a knife. I stapled my thumb. I got hit in the face by a door. I was attacked by a psychokitty and couldn't fucking move for 3 days. I fell down a flight of metal stairs. I rammed into a metal goal post. we are insulting the kid because he impaled himself on a fucking elephant. and spider man doesnt go around impaling himself. plus he lived. so no harm done. Its called a sense of humor, albeit a sick one.. still kid had an accident and lived. Think of all the "americas funniest home videos" you've probally watched and laughed at, and if you say none of em are funny, then you are either a liar or one dry boring person.
I dont have a problem with the mother giving the kid Spiderman 2, hell he needs all the practice he can get

Who gives a fuck whose fault it is????????????
Patch the kid up and tell him to go play some more and enjoy his fucking child-hood.
With the way he's going it's not gonna be much longer before it's over anyways.
Like i was saying: Who gives a shit whose god damned fault it is? IT'S THE MOM'S FAULT! IT'S THE MOVIE'S FAULT! IT'S THE GAME'S FAULT!! SONS OF BITCHES! IT'S THE FAULT OF THOSE DAMNED ARACHNIDS!! KILL 'EM ALL!!
Damn. What's with everyone trying so hard to figure out where to post blame. Just patch the kid up and send him on his next journey through a window or into the chemical closet. Shit. We're too worried about trying to find anyone to blame because we lack the accountability to admit that when we fuck up we are the retards who did it. Human kind needs to wake up and realize really fucking fast that we are our own worst enemy. When something happens, don't struggle and argue over whose fault it is, fix the dent, patch the hole, plug the leak, glue the crack, and send he or she or it on their merry way. God damn.
Whenever something happens to someone our first instinct has become to ask: WHOSE FAULT IS THIS????????????????????????
when you do something dumb you have yourself to blame. take some fucking responsibility. everyone has the ability to say: I'm not going to leap off that rock onto that bed of spikes because i might die. *sigh* it's amazing humanity has been around long enough to invent tools.
