US Soldiers Flee to Canada (http://www.thestar.com/NASApp/cs/ContentServer?pagename=thestar/Layout/Article_Type1&c=Article&cid=1089238210573&call_pageid=968332188492&col=968793972154&tacodalogin=no)

Am I the only one who thinks this is stupid? I mean, if killing is against your religion, why'd you join the army? You're not forced anymore, conscription isn't done in the US anymore, so he obviously joined it willingly. I read the article, but his reasons don't seem good enough. I mean, it's sort of like someone who's afraid of heights becoming a bridge painter...

Maybe I'm just misunderstanding the article.

That doesn't work anymore
Recent treaties stipulate deserters will be returned to the US, although obviously it's not exactly that. Perhaps it's because he requested asylum or whatever. I sort of doubt he won't be returned.

pwned
Edit: he joined the army being against killing. Just dumb of him, he could've started off with something mainly non combat but he became a soldier.

2nd edit: wtf, I hate doing that, changed the meaning

Too many people joined the reserves expecting it to be free money with just some exercise once a month.

Those idiot free loaders are shitting their pants now that we got a conservative president. Guess what? No more free money! You got to EARN your keep now.

Too many ppl join for their free ride to college, aka Mongomery GI bill.

Recruiters need to be change their angle as well. Service uses College as a hook to reel bodies in, and the service is NOT for everyone.

It's not for everyone, true - but the military is a GREAT jumping platform to get into college and get your life going.

Your family poor as dirt? Can't pay more than a nickel for college? You can join the military for 4 years, get a year done in the service, and have 40-60k for college once you get out.

NOTHING is better if you don't have the money.

And that says nothing about the dicipline, integrity, and honor you get from the military. If more men and women went into the military we wouldn't have so many problems with our society.

Have you ever been in the military? I don't mean that sarcasticly, but maybe you should read this thread:

Some of the people that joined, their parents didn't teach them crap. And they can "get by" without discipline here. I'm not talking about being respectful, I'm talking about taking care of yourself. Going back to school, cleaning you damn ROOM! Bathing more than once a WEEK! Not getting drunk every day, going to work with a hang over. Some units in the army put up with ALOT of crap from people to to keep their numbers up.

Example: One of my room mates got in trouble for taking hallucinogens... we are in IRAQ! He bought them from a NCO who was buying them from an Iraqi! When they searched peoples rooms, about 10 soldiers had those hallucinogens, and about 1/3 of the BASE (even NCOs and Officers) had alcohol! People walking around hallucinating/drunk with loaded M16s, M249s, M203s!... ect...

edit: I just remembered, we don't walk around base with loaded weapons. But we carry the ammo and the weapons, so someone hallucinating could of loaded their weapon. And it wasn't hallucinogens that make you see pretty colors, my room mate thought people were talking to him, giving him orders, ect... They found him squating down with his rifle behind his knees stareing at the Majors door!

Most people join for the collage money, some of those end up staying because it is easier than learning a trade or going back to school.

im certain that 4 years in the service will only get you something like 25k for college.

I once mailed 2 two litre Coke bottles filled with Jim Beam to my brother's ship in Bahrain. But what could possibly go wrong?! It was just a guided missle destroyer, it's not like they were walking around with M16s.

The Canadians should have killed them, damn deserters. In America, the best oportunities are reserved for those who are willing to kill. That is why I am joining the Navy.
