I juss built a PC and my CD drives aren't being recognized properly. Here's what happens:

1) I plug my main drive in to the "master" slot, and my secondary drive into my "slave" spot. Very logical. On startup, my main drive shows up on slave and master looks empty.

2) I unplug my secondary drive, that my main drive is in "master" and "slave" is open. Same thing.

Now, I haven't installed a driver for the secondary drive, but that doesn't explain why my main drive is being recognized as slave. Oh and, I checked the secondary drive and it has power.

If my problem is that I haven't installed my driver, then fuck me, don't even bother responding. Otherwise, I'd appreciate the help. Thanks.

Try using cable select if you have that option.

When you say you plugged it into the master and slave spot? whats that mean?

You control master/slave with the jumpers on the drives. Sounds like your slave is jumpered to master and your master is set for cable select or something.

Well first off you are confused. The 2 slots on the mainboard are not "master" and "slave" they are primary and secondary.

Usually people use the secondary for any CD drives they have, and the primary for any hard drives they have.

That said, how many devices do you have? If you have one hard drive and one CD drive, you want to look at the jumpers on the drive and make sure they are both set to Master. Plug one into the primary and the other into the secondary. You will now have a primary master and a secondary master.

If you want to go the other route set your hard drive to master, and your cd rom to slave via the jumpers. Then plug them BOTH into the primary slot, this will leave your secondary empty for future expansion.

Its all a matter of preference, but it sounds like your problem is not setting the jumpers properly.. you may have 2 set to CS or 2 set to Master or something along thos elines. You need to check the jumpers on the drives.

hmm... ok lemme clarify...

My primary is connected to:
Master: Hard Drive
Slave: (Open)

My secondary is connected to:
Master: Nice CD Drive*
Slave: Other CD Drive

And then floppy is fine.

*Nice CD Drive is showing up on Secondary Slave. Secondary Master looks empty.

Thanks for helpin, guys. Almost there. :)
