The FPS genre is extremely popular, and as so, there are several different types of FPS's. Most FPS's can be categorized into three main categories.

Fast Paced, Twich Based FPS's
Examples: Unreal Tournament 2004, Quake 3
These are for the speed demons of the FPS genre. Your reflex time is the most important thing here. These games are incredibly quick, and require fast eye movements to truly excel at them.
Charecteristics:
- Generally no reloads
- Cover is virtually non-existant
- Incorporates things like double jumping
- CoF bloom is not very important
- Fast Character Movement
- Weapon switching is near instantaneous

Medium Paced, Run-of-the-mill FPS's
Examples: Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Call of Duty
These are the median between fast and slow paced FPS's. Cover is emphasized as in slow paced FPS's, but reflex time is also important.
Characteristics:
- Reloads, but are generally "interruptable reloads"
- Cover is emphasized
- Jumping is in the game, but is only mildly punished
- CoF bloom is fairly important
- Average character movement
- Average weapon switching

Slow Paced, Cover Based FPS's
Examples: PlanetSide, Operation: Flashpoint
These are the most realistic of all FPS's. Staying still and firing from cover is generally the most emphasized thing. Reflex time plays the least role in these games. Character movement is also the slowest, however, you can generally holster your weapons to move more quickly.
Characteristics:
- Reloads, but are generally un-interruptable.
- Cover is extremely imporant.
- Jumping is punished severely
- CoF bloom is very important
- Slow character movement
- Slow weapon switching

Hard to Categorize games
Of course, every once in awhile, a developer likes to throw a monkey wrench into the formula and make it hard to categorize.

Battlefield 1942, Battlefield: Vietnam
These two games are fairly tough to categorize. The character movement speed suggests that it is a slow paced game, and the addition of the high emphasis on cover furthers that, however, it takes elements from other speeds. It has interruptable reloads, which suggests a medium paced FPS, but it also has near instantaneous weapon switching.
The Verdict: Slow Paced, Cover Based FPS

Halo: Combat Evolved
Another hard to categorize game. The general character speed, once again, suggests a medium paced fps. Interruptable reloads also help suggest this. However, the general lack of cover in the maps deter me from classifying it as a medium paced FPS. Also, the weapon switching is faster than of a normal medium paced FPS, which suggests a fast paced FPS.
The Verdict: Medium Paced, Run-of-the-mill FPS

Mid/Slow + Tribes (totally unclassifiable). I don't like games where the road to success is caffine.

I like medium... I'm no where near being a twitch gamer so medium is fast enough for me...

No preference. I've liked tons of games from each of those categories so it's kind of hard to choose. If anything might be medium.

A little of each. I've played HALO:CE, and was extremely good at it when I played online. I've done PS, which was fun, and would have been a lot more fun if my system could handle it (lagged like a horse with a broken leg). I'm also pretty good at fast-paced. Not the best, but I can definitely hold my own.

Fast or Slow. LAN parties are fun with twitch-based gibby fun, but I do enjoy a tactical shooter when I can afford to play one.

I'm a slow player (America's Army).

I would contest that Halo is a fast-paced game based on the lack of cover, the simplicity of vehicle operation, and the weapon system.

I classified Halo as a medium because it's less like Unreal Tournament and more like Call of Duty, although there is very little cover... but there are things like reloads.

DoD, which is a mix of fast paced and also slow in the tactical and cover sense :)

I prefer slow tactial shooters. Ghost Recon gave me multiple orgasms. But I'll do medium-paced (CoD and Halo), and even fast-paced (much <3 for UT2K4).

Mid-Slow is were it's at though fast paced are fun too.

All types of FPS = win.

Given a week to hone my skils i can make top 5 in a 30 person game of nearly any type. So i don't care so much there.

What would you classify HL2:DM as? I'm Uber 1337 at that more so than i was at PS.

Using Boost on Ghosts (RAMMING SPEED!!1!) and shotguns in Halo 2 would count as fast or medium?

Edit: wtf thread necromancy

I'd say a medium-slow paced game, with fast paced moments.

I'm filing Halo 2 under one of the greatest FPS's of all time. the multiplayer is unbevlievable. Fast paced, then slow paced, then fast paced. Cover is emphasized, teamwork (warthog, best vehicle in a game ever) I love it. I'm more of a medium pace guy but one who loves the holy shit twitchy encounters of CQB. Dual mags blazing, wham wham wham wham wham.. i LOVE it.

I like slow tactics where you gotta wait for enemys to come into view and snipe em and you got lots of places to hide in.

slow paced and realistic I can relate to, but if they do it wrong such as SOCOM II, then you get a crazy game that pisses you off everytime you lose a firefight.

I hated playing SOCOM II online. It was chaos. I never lasted more than 10 seconds from spawn.
