It seems that this is indeed all a marketing ploy. The wierd text and dialog on the website is partially out of the Halo books and such (or so people claim, I havent read them.) One person said that maybe that date marks the "Covenant invasion" which supposedly happens a few months before Master Chief arrives at Earth, which sets us up for the release date (our arrival on the scene). Also, the Bungie moderators have not commented on this whole thing despite the thread on their website being like 100 pages long now. Supposedly, another thread was started demanding a response from the devs and was promptly locked by a Bungie Moderator who said "you're not too smart are you." Obviously, this is all some kind of marketing hype. Definately unconventional, wierd, and a little bit creepy, but it sure as hell is helping to promote Halo 2 and keep everyone psyched up.

I have found a 'treasure-trove' of information that I believe says Halo 2 is coming August 24th, rather than the suggested, November 9th.
